  • Finite Math: Venn Diagram Region Method
In this video, we learn how to isolate certain regions of the Venn diagram using a simple method I teach the students I work with (I know it is taught elsewhere too). If we think of the Venn diagram as a "map" with discrete regions, we can categorize certain parts of it using a list of regions. From there was can find intersections, unions, complementary sets, etc., and then go back and shade in the Venn diagram. Enjoy!

VERY happy to hear you use correctly the verb "comprise". Very many folks, including You Tube Broadcasters, use that
word incorrectly by thinking that it is equivalent to "compose". But it's not !!

Thank you for this video, Brandon. I'm having to learn Finite Math, because it's part of my prerequisites to become an Advanced Nurse (NP). Finite Math isn't what you call extremely hard, but it's something you have to put into perspective and wrap your mind around.

Billy Staggs Thanks Billy! Did a ton of Finite tutoring while at Indiana University and while not hard math-wise, it is a very different way of thinking. Coming from a family full of nurses of many stripes hang in there and keep on learning. Best, B.

Hi Brandon, thank you for your videos, I'm learning so much and enjoying the process of increasing my knowledge of mathematics. I have a suggestion: In your description for the video, you have a typo: "From there was can find intersections...." It should be, "From there we can find intersections..." The "was" needs to be "we".

Thanks for doing these videos! They are really helpful and thanks for replying to my comments so fast! I just had two comments:
    1. I can't find your other videos other than this one and the one that goes with it. Do you have a list of all your videos on Venn Diagrams and can you provide a link to each one like on your blog/website so that we can find them on TH-cam. Just searching your name on TH-cam returns other videos on speadsheets and stuff. Everything is scattered all around on youtube under your name.
    2. Do you have videos on how to solve Word Problems using Venn Diagrams because that is where most students like me get stuck.

How do you go about assigning data to regions? How do you decide which region to assign data to? I have four categories, each divided by 2 sub-categories, and need to make a Venn Diagram of the data.

  • @TheGirl4real

I forgot one other comment. Can you make a video that explains (like if a person were 2 years old) how to label the Venn Diagrams, like how to draw it and where everything should go and why. For example, you could explain that they should begin in the middle section that links to A, B, and C and put in there the number of people who share all three things. Then take it from there but "explain" how to work outwards from there. Most books just say something like, "start in the middle and work out from there" and that makes no sense to a beginner. I found out how to do it after praying and searching but it took forever and without this first step nothing else makes sense.

The videos really helped a lot, but what about problems such as (A Intersect B^c) U (A^c Intersect B) (^c =complement). I was crazy and am taking this class completely online. Passed Precalc with an A, stepped back to take this class and am struggling.
