We built our barn / shop first just to have an indoor place to store the materials but then we were only two and not living in a travel trailer as we still own a home not far away.
Yes, it is very satisfying! We are very blessed to be able to do what we are doing, and raise our kids out here in the middle of our off-grid oasis 😊 ohh building the barn/shop first was a great idea! I wish we had a barn, just to store materials and put the tractor out of the rain!

I have a 1970 Ford 3000 diesel tractor and recently inherited a 1953 Ford 800. Both had no other choice than to sit outside under tarps until that barn / shop was built. We purchased a 28' travel trailer so we could stay out there for overnights and weekends while we (I) continued to clear on our raw land. I am really enjoying seeing your videos because it's so close to home for me.

I was thinking the same thing in the last video. I didn't see any collar ties...but I realized that he tied the rafters to the ceiling joist as well as the top plate with a bird's mouth. Should be enough for down South without heavy snow loads, and it allows for more head room in the attic. He could always come back and put in collar ties if he feels the roof is too heavy, or add hurricane ties, or both.
Oh, gotcha, we'll being in the south we don't have any snow loads and I also did 16in O.C. instead of 24, so it should be sturdy enough to last a LONG time! Knock on wood 😅

@DIY_or_DIE without a gap at the top of your rafter blocking, there won't be any airflow. Unless the camera makes it appear differently, the blocking us flush with the top of the rafters.
The whole attic will be open though, I don't see how the blocking would stop air coming in through the soffit and flowing up out of the ridge vent? If we were doing a vaulted ceiling and there was no attic space than I could see how the blocking would impede airflow because the only space for air to flow would be in between the rafters.

I'm not sure about cheaper for materials, since I didn't get any quotes for trusses, but I would think it is, especially since labor is typically half the cost lol. Yes, this method allows me to do all the work myself, board by board, instead of needing a crane truck for trusses.
