      I used to do that too mostly because I would scare the bajeezus out of other kids with my meltdowns. So I would sit alone and look over to see how other kids managed to do anything and then I'd copy them.There was a trend among girls to write down the prettiest names from name tags,but I would write down random names.

    RE: speech delay. It's possible to be on the opposite extreme of speech delay and be autistic. An autistic toddler could have precocious speech. My niece, who just got diagnosed as a teenager, was way ahead of her peers in terms of being able to talk when she was a toddler. She could speak in full sentences before she was two years old. On the other hand, my autistic son is eight and still nonverbal.

      I just wanted to leave exactly that as a comment. Well, minus the personal information bit.
      I was one of those extremely early talking Aspie toddlers. My mother tells me I started adding words up to sentences when I was around 8/9 months old. (In exchange for that I was barely able to walk at the age of three 🤷 Can't be fast with everything.)
      Also as far as I know girls are often less obvious in their stimming. I never did any obvious hand motions. Maybe that's part of why I remained undiagnosed until my late twenties when I stumbled over it accidentally and by myself...

      I have this weird habit of "mirroring" dialects of people I frequently talk to. Which occasionally makes then think I'm trying to mock them or something.
      That one Scottish guy was seriously confused when I started to sound like I'm from Edinburgh myself. (English isn't even my native language)
      And no, I am not doing it on purpose and I can't keep myself from doing it.

    As a parent of an Aspie (he's 10 now and recently got his diagnosis), I don't think I have replied appropriately to my son over his lifetime when he's upset from a sensory issue or upset because his routine is messed up etc. Should I strive to help him keep his routine at all costs. Do I give away the clothes that doesn't think match? When he gets overloaded and yells at me, how do I respond? If he doesn't want to go play with kids at a party, what do I say? I'd love to see a video on how parents should encourage kids with Autism, do we give into all the quirks and point out their neurodiversity as a good thing but try to get them to conform a little to the world in which they live. For example, my son will never greet adults in person, but he looks rude. Do I keep encouraging him to do that? I feel. like I never know the right thing to do or say.

    • @nicoco4974

      I’ve been thinking a lot about this. Why am I spending so much in therapies for him to learn how to say how are you back? He’s got to the “I’m good part” but hasn’t nailed the rest and is clearly not or never will be interested in asking. So what if he comes off as rude? He doesn’t owe an explanation to anyone back that he’s autistic nor should we force him to care about asking how people are if he doesn’t care? Do people really truly care how someone is doing bc he’s capable of that. It really makes you question everything.

    How important do you think it is to encourage friendship with my Aspie kid? He usually doesn’t care about having friends, but occasionally he is sad or lonely about it. I try to explain that he should invest in friends, by making an effort to spend time with people. But usually he rejects invitation. He’s 10. Should I push him a bit to do things with kids or just leave him alone about it, unless he decides he’s interested on his own accord?

    • @WeeLin
      @WeeLin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've often wondered this. I knew I had Synaesthesia long before I went for an autism diagnosis, and I've suffered long bouts of headaches, migraines and face pains. My theory was that, maybe, having overlapping senses was basically frying my brain when it was overstimulated with lights, noise and stress. I mean, if seeing letters triggers my brain to see colours, who knows what other random things it's doing in the background? I read about a study that seemed to show higher rates of Synaesthesia in autistic people, and I really hope more research is done on this topic.

    My son was recently diagnosed ADHD. We’ve been having behavioral problems with him since he was little. He didn’t start talking until he was 2yr 5m old and he didn’t like looking you in the eye. We thought for the longest he had a bit of a hearing problem before we’d call his name and he’d just ignore us. I just brushed it off as him being too focused on what he was doing. He would like to run back and forth in the house and twirl around and around. He’s extremely picky eater and always has been. Now he’s 6 almost 7 and his school has been saying he’s acting different from the other. He currently attends a private school with his 8yr old sister who has ADHD. But even though they both have been diagnosed with the same thing my son acts completely different. I have to pack him the same exact lunch daily and if I change anything he has a meltdown. If I pull him away from what he is doing, which is mostly wanting to play Minecraft, he has a meltdown. He throws himself on the floor and repeatedly moves his foot up and down, and gets on his knees and swings his arms back and forth crying as we try calmly him down. I can tell you 10 things my son eats and that’s it. We have to give him multi vitamins and protein supplements just to make sure he’s getting enough nutrients. When he watches tv(Minecraft) shows, he will stand in front of the tv swinging his arms back and forth and then twirls around spinning. We are getting him reevaluated because we feel like he may have more than just ADHD. his sister which has ADHD is mostly just extremely hyperactive, and acts completely differently. I just feel overwhelmed because I took my son to get checked when he was 4 and the people spent five minutes with my son, and told me that he had no issues. Now I have equipped myself with video footage of my son behaviors so I can show them. My son loves to go up to children and try to make friends, but he always comes out extremely awkward. And if he gets blown off he gets so emotional and throws another meltdown. He now looks at me in the eyes a lot more than when he was a baby. That has gotten better. But the tantrums are hard. His picky eating is hard. When he throws a tantrum because he gets pulled away from what he’s wanting to do or a change in a routine at home or in school, it can be hard. I’m really suspecting he has more than ADHD and may be a little autistic. We go in March for his evaluation. I just want to know how to help my son.
    My son doesn’t flap his hands though, he swings them back and forth repeatedly. When excited or upset. We just want answers and to be heard. Also he has incredible memory and knows exactly where his favorite toys are. He can name every construction vehicle. Knows about every monster truck and tells you everything about Minecraft. That’s all he talks about. I honestly believe he has more than just ADHD when comparing his symptoms and behaviors.

      Sounds like he is on the spectrum. You are so right to push for answers . With the right schooling he will be a very successful person . If he is on the spectrum you will know what he need to develop early on to fit in socially. Autism is in my family. Good luck ❤

    I remember refusing to take a bath if the water was too hot so my grandmother had to buy a pool thermometer just for my baths. I could not be in the house if there were strong smells and when I was really young I would freak out during fireworks. My aunt said I would freak out if I was put on grass when I was a baby too. I do not think I have really ever done the hand flapping, I have other stimming that I have relied on since I was a baby. Plus, I probably did not do stuff like that because it would have made me a target. I was taught to not to do anything that would draw attention to me and doing stuff like that would have. I had delayed speech and had to meet with a speech therapist. I remember going to a hearing doctor a lot as a kid. I was lucky and made friends with kids who were more assertive than me and they went out of their way to involve me in their play.
    Knowing what I do now about autism it was really apparent that I am autistic and I am sure that if the higher ups knew that females could be autistic too I would have been diagnosed with it way back when. Although, thinking on how my schools treated those with autism I am realizing that perhaps it was a good thing that I was misdiagnosed as a child.
    I have a cousin who was diagnosed as a child with Asperger, I always believed that he was ignoring me when I called him because he had selective hearing. I thought that like any child he was just selecting to hear me when he wanted to.

    I have a 3yo son who I noticed he is just not respond to his name evertime I call him,he will respond once out of 10times,he has short attention to play and hardly make eye contact,he is happy all the time,he can speak in word but not sentences. I'm going to send him to school very soon and the moment the teacher look at him, she told me to seek medical help as they notice something different in my son,maybe a mild problem,it is a dilemma for me,and after I watch your TH-cam,I see all the symptoms in my husband,and only now I realized why my husband was just difficult to communicate and always having different thought compared to others which is weird

    My son is 10 and has 2 older siblings and he only seems to do well if they give in to his wants, he has to be in control of the play like plans out what they play and can even come up with a mental script it's just something I have seen him do over the last few years other than that in other play time like recess at school he was more of a loner swinging and watching the other kids almost like a parent trys to tell them if they aren't following the rules

    This highlights to me that its important to speak with professionals, or at least mix with other parents when you have young kids so you can get an insight into what behaviour is typical and what behaviour might not be. I'm an only child and didn't mix much with other kids. My autistic behaviour was attributed to being shy. My parents had nothing to compare me too.

I tried playing soccer but was confused or "overstimulated" by so many people, so I would go play on the swings and slides and monkey bars often by myself. Its not that I wanted to play a lone, but Playing with 20-30 other kids was just too much for me. I really wanted to play in a small group of kinds.

    My son is currently 3 years and 8 months old. A doctor recommended us getting him evaluated sense he keeps repeating himself. He has alot of ASD symptoms but the biggest problem is that he tends to have a lot of tantrums especially when we go out and are in the car. He recognizes certain streets that lead to the mall, highway, family members homes, or pizza place. He begins to cry that he wants to "go". In the last few weeks it has gotten really bad to the point he throws things he asks for ( items that would calm him down before). Any advice on how to deal with this?

    • @zia_kat
      @zia_kat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      they're not temper tantrums, they are meltdowns. it has nothing to do with temper. for me it's usually about being being overwhelmed by sensory input-- lights, sounds, touch/tactile sensations, smells. as a neurotypical imagine what it might be like if you were standing in the center of a circle surrounded by 15 ambulances with sirens blaring and lights flashing and you couldn't escape. how long would you be able to remain calm before just losing it?

    • @marymess454
      @marymess454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It’s called a meltdown. It usually occurs when a child has been exposed to something they have a very sensitive response to. As soon as my soon would get the least not fidgety, o knew something was wrong and that I needed to help him by changing something. Once he could communicate, it got easier to ask what was causing his uneasiness and work around it. My son deals with a lot of sensory issues and food aversions, going to the grocery store is always an adventure of challenges. But we’ve formed a good routine and I pay attention to his body language to know when I need to hurry things along and get out of there.

      My son I don't remember if he ever had one, and he's the gifted student but the fifth grade teacher wanted him checked to see if he had ADHD. She thought half the boys in class had it, so I figured it was just the boys going through puberty, he's always been high energy and might be bored in school!. Now I realize you can have ADHD and be gifted so I wish I'd had him checked. I think I might be also. My daughter is the one who had what people have called the terrible two's or temper tantrums. I just got on the floor with her and held her gently but firmly so she wouldn't hurt herself and rocked her while telling her "I love you, I'm right here" over and over. As she calmed down i loosened my hold until she took a deep breath. Then she'd turn around and say Thank you mommy, and run off and play.
      When I get overwhelmed my brain just says No and I have a seizure, or I break a bone. If I don't slow down my body makes me. My mother had stimming behavior and I see traits in my siblings too, and their kids

      MELTDOWNS, so many different versions as my son grew up, we alleviated ( some) terrible twos issues by my teaching him baby sign language, his first words came in sign …and carried on as gesturing was easier for him…and when he got frustrated ( even now at 17) he often used some symbols instead of talking as it was almost simpler..and came to him without having to think. He was not delayed in speech, however, far from it.. advanced in concepts as well as language, and an amazing gifted memory . But the one thing that was the same, definitely attributed to over stimulating, was the meltdown… we also had the joy of night terrors. It’s been an interesting ride, still ongoing 💝👍🏼I’d not change it…but I also say it’s not been easy.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandk6504 ok then, so are you all saying that any child who does this is on the spectrum? My child who did NOT have these meltdowns is the gifted student who had a teacher who wanted them tested to see if they had ADHD. I wish I had now.

    My eldest died recently from drug poisoning. From 14yrs old he tried self medicating because adhd was called naughty boy syndrome and because of this we were still begging to get him help at 30. He was finally diagnosed with adult adhd, bipolar and odd. He left his kids because he didn’t want them around him if he would scream and shout. The mother added to his problems by refusing to let him have access. 3 months ago he was given 6 months to live so he didn’t want to wait around and got blood clots on his lungs then also epilepsy. The world is cruel when a diagnosis for mental health has already dragged down to an unbearable life. Now my granddaughter is Elsie showing signs as early as 2yrs old

    My son is 4 and has been diagnosed with Complex Motor Stereotypies (stemming), SPD, and has a slight motor delay. He has been screened for ASD, and was given the diagnosis neurodevelopmental disorder-other. He spoke his first word at 9 mos. He could speak full sentences of 5+ words by 2.5, correspondence count to 10 by 24 months. His developmental screen revealed a high IQ. He loves preschool, he's very social, he will talk to strangers and ask new kids to play with him. He invites his friends to play, he joins games with kids at preschool. On the other hand, he couldn't jump at 3 years old. He would be afraid of falling if there were a steep sets of stairs. For awhile he got really scared of swings. OT said that it was SPD with his vestibular sense causing gravitational insecurity (think activities where your feet leave the ground). He does gymnastics and OT/PT which have helped a lot. I've noticed some other sensory issues that have become bigger recently. He hates having his hair washed and always has. He would cling to me terrified in water. We started private swim lessons and he's improving and likes to play in the water now, but he's very concerned about sinking. At the pool I tried to get him to jump to me and promised I wouldn't let his head go under. He pointed to a no diving sign on the interior side of the pool that depicted a person cracking their head and said, "look at the sign Mommy, it's dangerous." I explained that meant not to jump head first. When I take his wet suit off after lessons he cries and screams my hands are cold and it hurts. My hands are definitely cold bc the Y is a lap pool which is why he wears a wetsuit for lessons. He seems very sensitive to pain. Sometimes he gets upset that something is stinky when I don't smell anything. Lastly, he doesn't seem over sensitive to most sounds, but really loud stuff like the shop vac or the leaf blower will cause him to leave and wait until it's over. He likes to play lots of different games, but he loves to recreate movies and he definitely seems to "ignore" me at times when I say his name, and I have to say it over and over or tap him, but his preschool teacher says he doesn't do most of the things I mention at preschool. Since, he didn't meet the criteria for ASD, I'm really left wondering. My biggest question is how do I help with sensory issues and if you have advice? I tried taking his wetsuit off in the warm shower only letting the water hit his body and not hair, but that didn't help. Last time I ran my hands under warm water for a long time before I took his suit off. He complained, but his response wasn't as emotional. I've tried talking to his OT about hair washing etc and she says give him control of dumping the water to wash his hair. This does not work, bc he won't dump water on his hair. She keeps saying I'm doing the right stuff, but doesn't really give suggestions on how to make taking off his suit, washing his hair, or clipping his nails easier on him. I'm wondering if you might have some suggestions?
