Could you imagine Dirk, Nash, Finley and Terry on the same team in 2006? Then add Tyson Chandler to the mix a few years later... that team wins at least 3 titles even with Finley coming off the bench as he aged... that's what the Spurs did right, they always kept their teams together...

FighterCK Man I just don't get how Cuban let Nash walk. I know since he has said it was his biggest mistake, but I mean like I don't get why they made that decision even at that time.
I know Nash exploded in Phoenix, and he wasn't putting up those numbers in Dallas, but he was still pretty good. You are also building a team and chemistry is really important, and Nash was with Dirk from the beginning and they were best friends.
Then to see them give that big contract to Eric Dampier, ugh...
Man, I'm glad Dirk stayed for 21 years, but sometimes I wonder if we deserved his loyalty and patience, lol.
      Oh well.

      I agree
I was sad when Steve left Dallas
Nash went on to become the best point guard of the league
While Dirk went on to win a ring
Both players benefitted in the end
But still I keep on thinking just like everyone else
      What if?

@@albertorodriguez1486 Sure, the Mavs were right there. They also had good pieces like Josh Howard coming in but Nash was at his best for a good 5 more years after 2004, so it made very little sense to let him go. Apart from San Antonio, there was a few year window with less resistance in the West where the Mavs with Nash would could have won multiples.

Its hard to say the Mavs would've won the title with Nash. Dirk made a good point that they grew while apart. Nash didn't make the jump from All-Star to superstar until he went back to Phoenix and the entire team was catered to his skill set.

Well first the Mavs (with Nash) would have almost assuredly beaten the Heat the first time with a Hall of Famer at Point Guard as they had a Shooting Guard as there Point Guard in Jason Terry.
2ndly Cuban was a Complete Idiot in listening to the Pervasive Media Circus, not only about how you "Have to have a Great Center to Win in this League(Sorry but just because Shaq won didn't mean you were going to find another Shaq to compete against him and NOOO Eric Dampier was not Shaq) but he also listened to "Nash is going to break down due to his body not being able to keep up with his frantic play" BS. Yes he hurt himself a few times, course Phoenix treated it as a Trainer issue and not a player one and they were correct.
Cuban listening to the media and you have to say Avery Johnson about giving the Big Dumb Center(Dampier) the money not Nash was the biggest mistake this franchise ever made.
The only thing that could come close to it's colossal fuck up is to just play devils advocate and say that they were actually the ones feeding Roy Tarpley the Drugs that eventually got his HOF talent banned permanently from the league, Which of course was the opposite of what they were doing.

I think the Mavs have a chance against the Heat if they had Nash at the point that year.
It's gonna be Nash, Josh Howard, Stackhouse, Dirk, Dampier closing line up with Devin, Terry, Van Horn, Daniels as the bench. Jamison was traded to the Wizards in exchange for the NO. 5 pick (Devin harris), Stackhouse, Christian Laettner. Terry was acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in the Antoine Walker trade.
So now you have a player in Devin and Jason Terry who can keep up against the waterbugs of the league and you have Nash who is basically a Steph Curry to Dirk's Klay Thompson. That would've been sweet! And then 5 years into the future, you trade Devin to the Nets for JKidd and Dampier to the Bobcats for Tyson Chandler. Well, it's just a wild guess.

Nash is a good offensive player but defensive i dont think so. Now comparing him to Jason Kidd, well like they said, offense wins games but defense wins championships.

The Mavs did great in not bringing back Nash. I don’t think you guys understand how terrible Nash was on defense. During his time with Phoenix, every top guard had career games against him. Even a player like Jason Kidd who wasn’t known as a scorer would drop 30 on him. Combining him with Dirk, it may be great for you stat geeks, but in reality, two of the worst defenders of all time, playing significant roles, is a recipe for disaster.

Unfortunately, defensive stats don't back you up. Nash defensive rating was 110.5. The average rating for a player is 110.6. Plus, Nash took a decent amount of charges.
