I am Thai and I believe in prophecy. Long ago, people in the past had knowledge of astrology. I once predicted that The Thai kingdom will be prosperous and a center for people from many races who can live together in peace and harmony.

For many Southeast Asia, especially Thai, being dark is not about race but social status of the bygone date. In old day, affluent people live comfortably life while the poor work in the field under the intense sun. Thus, being Sun burn dark was associated with poverty and underprivileged class. Now, people don’t care, some people still prefer fair skin but darker skin tone people are well represented too.

Colorism and racism are not mutually exclusive, they often work together to maintain social hierarchies. While lighter skin preference may have originated from class distinctions, it has been reinforced by Western beauty standards and global media representation, making it difficult to separate from racial bias. This is especially evident in how darker-skinned Southeast Asians, Black individuals, and other non-white people are treated in various social and professional spaces.
So while it’s true that darker-skinned individuals are becoming more visible in Thai society, the systemic structures that historically marginalized them still exist whether in media representation, employment opportunities, or social treatment.

Southeast Asians are peaceful and friendly people. Also, we have shared ancestors. Many of our indigenous people are Black. You can see African looking people in Papua New Guinea, right beside Indonesia, even though they are Asian.

As a Thai who's lived in a few western countries, I know both worlds. Respect goes both ways. Thailand has historically seen a fair share of different races so I don't expect that Thai people will react negatively towards darker skin. The old attitude towards someone with darker skin is more of a financial status ie if you have whiter skin, you're probably richer. And you're probably poorer if your skin is dark. As I said, this is an old attitude but some people still carries it. I personally accept all types of people as long as they put effort to understand our culture and respect it and our people. Buddhism plays a massive role on our characters. However, if you belittle Thai people, I wouldn't be surprised that you would see others rally against you. As said, respect goes both ways.

@@peaceloveShu With the financial status, it pretty much comes down to: the darker your complexion the more likely that you come from a family of labourers than someone with a lighter complexion. It seems this way in most of Asia or really the whole world to varying degrees
When my pops was in Vietnam in 67-69, he also ventured into Cambodia and Thailand and he told me they were BLACK TOO. He said even their Buddha had a big wide nose and big lips and nappy bantu knots

I’m mixed and most people are my complexion and unfortunately for me some actually just think I am Thai 😅 so I don’t get any special treatment.

I stayed in Malaysia for 3 months and boy, short stay accommodation was fine, but for long stay accommodation if you want to sign a lease, many landlords say no blacks. I’m looking into Thailand now because Malaysia wasn’t for me.

Just a observation. Thailand is extremely popular with black guys from the US. But pre 2005 Africans had a massive presence. Mainly in St Pats and definately BKK. As an example in the Nana area they had their own St which was Soi Africa adjacent to Soi Arab. Sukhumvit Soi 3. Thats all changed now due to some reasons I wont go into
They came over here doing stupid stuff they should have left in Africa - selling drugs, scamming people, treating every lady like a prostitute and failing to blend in... the Thai police and everybody here cut them off. Warning to the "passport bros" that want to come here and act up! Leave the US in the USA...
Just being black in the US is doing enough to get in trouble. Calling the police when you get robbed is a risky move, and it's only getting worse. I traveled worldwide in the military but haven't been to Bangkok yet. I hope to check it out this year before it gets too crazy. Also, Bangkok has been really popular for years and has been the most visited city in the world in the last two years. Also earned the same title in 2012, 2013, 2016-2018, 2023-2024 so it's really popular.

I was in Japan and Thailand and currently in Cambodia.
The people are friendly and you can notice the lack of aggression and stress
Every place has it's pros and cons and you have to carry what you need and let go of what is a burden

Unfortunately the only rude treatment I’ve experienced here are from foreigners/ westerners. More specifically black men from America. It’s crazy. I’m a black woman and I still gotta experience this bull. So yes it’s super kindness here… foreigners are the ones that bring that outside culture/ mentality. 😢😢
