Frogfish hunting defective maroon clownfish

  • The maroon clownfish has flared gills. They are fish I breed but there are usually a few each clutch that have defects. Not only will they have poor quality of life they could pass poor genetics on. It's one thing when clownfish have crazy patterns (good) it's another when they have actual issues that effect their life and potentially the lives of offspring (bad).
    The frogfish is better than flushing the fish and a really interesting fish in itself to keep. While some people transition them to frozen food, the only time they really move with any sort of will is when they are hungry. Now that he ate he will barely move for 5 or 6 days. The live diet that is 100% disease free and fed a highly nutritious diet will hopefully keep the frogfish healthy for years to come.

    Holy hell man.... the first 1:50 seconds I kept thinking you should've fed this clown way sooner instead of letting it grow so big first, cause every time I've had a fish swallow something too big, I've always ended up stressing out that my fish won't be able to fully swallow it & will end up choking & dying with the thing half in/half out their mouth..... but then *BOOM,* and a split second later the entire thing is in its stomach like nothing ever happened. That's fkn unreal man, never seen any other fish swallow something as big as itself with so much ease. Absolutely wild.

    Hey awesome fish! im looking to get my hand s on a frogfish can I pick your brain on your care/feeding and water parameters?

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course! I keep him at a lower water temp but in summer it does rise. Heater is set to 72. They are not overly picky about water parameters and you are much more likely to overfeed then under feed. While mine is getting bigger he’s still getting a clown every 6 days most of the time or 2 smaller ones. Any further questions ask away.

      @@captivebredcanada Thanks for the response!, do you supplement your clown fish before feeding? and would you ever consider feeding him ghost shrimp or guppys. As well as how long have you had him? what species do you have? I'm planning on doing reef tank with 2 frogfish, with the temp around 78-80 do you think that's plausible. people say they are cannibalistic but then i also soo videos with multiple frogfish. thanks!

      @@DefNotChair The clownfish are fed a high quality diet of mostly TDO but some frozen food several times a day everyday of their lives. They're just defective. I would not consider ghost shrimp or guppies. I would consider mollies if I ever ran out of fish but I don't think that will be a problem. I have Antennarius striatus. I got him in first week of November I believe. Yes there is a good chance one would eat the other one. I would say 2 would be a big risk but of course it can be done it just depends on if you're willing to loose both. The higher temperature means you would need tropical species. This guy is sub tropical.

      @@captivebredcanada thank you for the reply I don't know what I should be feeding mine once I get my hands on him. Salt water clowns go for 15-30 dollars each. D:

      @@DefNotChair If the channel name didn't tip you off, the only reason he/she is using clownfish as feeders is because they breed the clownfish, and virtually every batch of fry will contain a few individuals with defects/deformities. Most fish breeders just cull any defective fry, in this case the breeder uses them as feeders for other fish they own.
      @captivebredcanada failed to mention _why_ they'd rule out ghost shrimp & guppies, but consider mollies a potentially viable option. I'd take an informed guess that freshwater feeders aren't ideal for marine species, but since mollies can be raised in brackish/salty water, they'd be much more suitable as feeders for marine fish. If that's the reason (and I can't think of another obvious explanation) then it just means you'd need to find a source of saltwater feeder fish. Nothing special about clownfish as feeders, OP just happens to have a steady supply of that species on hand due to breeding them. Forget about buying fancy aquarium species as feeders and just find yourself a reliable & affordable supply of safe, clean (i.e. parasite & disease-free) saltwater bait fish. Simple.

    I see you’ve fed him a few Maroon clownfish, why? What was defective and why are you feeding him these fish? Do you find sick clownfish at the LFS? Just wondering because that’s an expensive meal.

    • @captivebredcanada
      @captivebredcanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you see him? He had seriously flared gills. I would never ever ever ever ever even for a second consider feeding my frogfish a sick fish. I can't stress this enough. This frogfish only eats disease free fish. I only feed him fish that I personally breed which ensures 1000% disease free. Also feeding the defective ones is a sensible use of the culls vs just killing them.

      Not sadder than flushing him. Becoming food is both useful and more productive than simply culling. Frogfish has to eat and defective fish have to be culled.

    Frogfish are part of the anglerfish family & they are venomous so if you want to handle one, you have to be very careful because the fins can penetrate your skin.

    • @captivebredcanada

      They are not venomous at least google this before you post please.
