Eddy hopping I can generally (depending on the size of the headland) overcome the current from about 2.5-3.5 knots. I was able to get out here at a little over 3. I tried a bit earlier at a higher speed and had to fight too much. It's possible so keep chasing it!
Wow. So it really moves like a small boat or a Play boat at 17'. I'm thinking it performs like Xtra Volan or Isle. Thx for posting the boat looks awedome.
It does! The Petrel Play is still a bit quicker to spin - less bow to bring around, but no complaints for a 17' kayak. Having spent time in other 16-18' kayaks, this was far more playful yet tracked effortlessly. I'd say, based at least on dimensions and design characteristics of the hull, the Petrel outperforms the 3 you mentioned...though the Xtra is likely better in surf. Given that the weight is less than 37.5 lbs (and that's heavy compared to one I sold), less work is needed to maneuver the Petrel.
Outstanding! I cannot oevrcome tide current near Ala Spit and you did at Deception Pass! Very encouraging!
