I just saw the band last week for the first time since THAT '72 show. I can't adequately express how good that felt!

They always had great lineups at the Schaefer Music Fesitvals. Imagine, in a 48 hour period you could see the Kinks and the Doors!!!

It's sad most people only know Sha Na Na from their goofy TV show, and not for the bad ass band they were in their early days.

Weren't the Dead End / East Side Kids similarly bad a** in their early movies (as much as could be allowed in the days of the Production Code) before going the "goofy" route as the Bowery Boys? If so, sounds like the producers of the TV show had precedent for so transforming Sha Na Na's persona . . .

The worst thing about the TV show was that it was lip-synched. These guys were great singers and real musicians; they could have played and sung live.
Plenty of performers in those days sang live on their shows: Sonny and Cher, the Smothers Brothers, Mac Davis, Donny and Marie, Glenn Campbell. It's a shame that we were deprived of seeing and hearing Sha Na Na do likewise.

They were amazing. Great musicians & a great mix of singers. Listen to their "Sha na now" album. It really showcases their talents.

Loud, fast, raw, and excellent. But most of all, it sounds like a whole heck-of-a-lot-of FUN.

Thanks for recording AND saving this piece of rock 'n roll history. I grew up in NYC in the 70s listening to 50s rock 'n roll on WCBS F.M. I also watched and liked that syndicated show they did in the late 70s. The show's skits were a bit lame, but they always treated the music with the utmost repect. Were these fellows the first punk rockers? It's a thought.

Looking at the schedule of other acts, the Canned Heat\Dr. John show must've been awesome.

I was wondering about your solo album. I own it. Can you talk about it? What was the group attitude? Did Grease motivate you? You, Denny and Jocko were the only ones with solo records before 1980.
