  • A few hours on Lancaster Station circa 1984 filmed by my Dad testing out a new (at the time) video camera. At one point a default date of 1st Jan 1983 pops up but that isn't the date of the film! Including a class 85 on a northbound service, a 31 arriving on a Hull-Lancaster and running round the train, various passenger services hauled by classes 47,86 and 87 and a class 40 on the mail train.

Much better than these modern monstrosities!

Look at those proper trains with lots of coaches. Nowadays passengers are stuffed into Pendolinos and Voyagers which stink of sewage and are uncomfortable. Also like winning the lottery if you get a cramped seat.

      They were far more spacious!

Weird to think that Lancaster had direct services to Poole - was that a summer special? And via the Chiltern Mainline? Strange to think how many direct connections we've lost across the network these days, but I guess it makes service patterns more predictable

Lancaster station just as I remember it as a little kid, the loco hauled train to Hull, 101s on the Morecambe line, 108s on the Barrow line and of course a class 40

That class 31 was on a York train, not a Hull train. The service was a replacement for the Nottingham-Glasgow Central service via the Settle-Carlisle Line, and was originally worked by Class 124s cascaded from Trans-Pennine duties.

Excellent video! Certainly bringing back childhood memories. I was 5 years old at the time this video was made. Lancaster also being my local mainline station.
    Thanks for Sharing!

Thank you for this. The time spent on that station during my early teens was amazing. 37s at night on cement trains were the stuff of legend and mythical beasts. This brings back so many happy memories. Again thank you

Funnily enough that 85006 is still about!
It's not a runner but it is under restoration so it may yet venture out again somewhere under the wires!

Interesting set of carriages behind the 47 at 4.39, a number of declassified coaches in there, wonder what the working was?

such a shame the colour's gone a bit over time.....but fantatsic all the same.

I made videos in 1984. The colour hasn't "gone", video equipment of that era had poor colour reproduction, particularly in bad lighting!

  • @marcse7en

Very poor picture quality! I made videos on Betamax and VHS in 1984, and the picture, 35 years later, is much better than this!

You should have done a video of Lancaster Station in the early/mid 80s like this then!
