8:00 should be required viewing for anyone thinking about the loop. The wind and the proximity of the tow must have raised your heart rate for a few minutes. Love the videos.
It was not the only time it was raised on that river! Locking with the tows and their engines running almost smashed us into a wall one time. I still feel like it was a miracle we made it up that river with all the debris due to the very high water. It was a little easier coming back down!
Thank you. It was a fun spot. We were there on the weekend so got to see a lot of action and a number of people came by to say hi. Such a friendly place.
The best Marina on the Illinois River is Heritage Harbor. Sad to hear that Jeremy, the dock master/marina manager passed away. Jeremy was so helpful and kind - we will all miss him.
Hi, i'm in Chattanooga and i"m looking to purchase a boat and do exactly what you guys are doing.. Do yo you feel like the 56 is ok for the rivers ? Just curious to hear your opinon. Thanks for the great vidios
Yes we think our 56 is perfect. We lived on her 7 months travelling up Michigan for the summer and back and we were very comfortable. Her 800 gallon fuel capacity enabled us to be able to do the 330 miles of the Illinois River plus the 250 miles of the Mississippi River without having to buy any fuel. She also holds 200 gallons of fresh water.
Before Freebird we had a Sea Ray 44 Sundancer. Freebird’s flybridge catches more wind but her weight and bow and stern thrusters make her very controllable to an experienced boater. We are very pleased with her handling. 😀

Thanks for the reply. What is your opinion on docking a boat that size? I'm used to a boat in 35-40ft range.
