I really want to enjoy this series & how the journey develops. Hoping the rather dour approach becomes more uplifting & fun with a smile or two. Stay safe ….. keep on the black stuff! 🏍
Hi Ross, good shout and yep, I'm quite a bit further into the trip than this and realised I've got my office voice on, will try and cherry pick the brighter bits, you may have to wait a couple of episodes. I think things improve from Episode 5 which should publish this Wednesday. I think Episode 4 is a tad brighter too. But that of course is subjective. Many thnaks for sticking with it!!! Nick
When we were riding in the 90's and touring on our sport touring ones with custom exhaust. We all had customs made heatshields out of stainless steel that would sit between the soft bags and the mufflers on both sides. Our bikes were alittle bit bigger than yours, all in the 1000 to 1200 range. Looking at your bike, you could have one that mounts to the rear footpeg mount.
Hi. I’m currently in Portugal on my 500X having been in France and Spain. On the comfort front I tend to rest for five minutes or so every couple of hours. That sorts out any discomfort. Fuel consumption wise I’m getting 3,1 to 3,2 per 100km. Yesterday was actually 2,8! With the luggage it really is worth getting some decent panniers. I’ve got Givi Canyon soft panniers and they’re great. The lock on to the carrier and the set even comes with an exhaust extension the alters the direction of the exhaust gasses. Worth every penny. 474km today. 🙂
Thanks for the info David. Yes, I'm tending to stop every couple of hours or 100km depending on terrain too to stretch my legs in the. Great news about the fuel consumption. The Lomo bags are actually pretty good, I just didn't pay enough attention when loading them. I'll look into the Givis though Nick
Hi Jay, I had hard panniers on my CBF1000 and invariably filled them to the brim, was TRYING to be a bit more reserved on this trip... didn't happen! Nick
Hi Nick, good to see the warts and all videos. All a learning experience. As you move through your journey things will get smoother once all the niggles are ironed out. We all have them. All the best, DC.
Thanks DC, I'm learning new lessons every day! I'd thought at my "mature" years I'd know myself and be slick at day to day travel... still learning (and applying) Nick
I had a similar thing happen to me many years ago. They were my throw-over panniers, but not my bike, or me using them... My friend who borrowed them had a Honda 400 Superdream, so they were returned with a hole in both panniers! I prefer hard luggage, but the cost is ridiculous. I think it’s around £1300 for the 500X ...and there’s not much room either.
Hi Steve, oh, that's painful. I think the Lomo's were £55, if I'd thought properly about it I'd have researched the heat shield. Outback Motortek do one for about £35, if only I'd known! Nick
Often the only way to learn is through trial and error with a little suffering thrown into the mix......I'm sure that you will streamline your packing etc. very quickly. Thanks for sharing.
Only up to this video but looking at that melted pannier, I think I would have strapped it to the back of the roll bag using the ROK straps to keep it away from that exhaust.
Hi @jkl82, thanks for the suggestion. It was an option, eventually I used RokStraps to hold it higher, not much in it by the end but at least it stopped melting! Nick
If exhaust heating issue stays perhaps get a fitting copper plumbing elbow to direct the hot gas stream a bit away...done similar for my (smaller )enduristan side bags. Also perhaps stick some double folded radiator insulation at bottom of your bag iwo hottest place...and or temporary 50 mm wide alu strip from diy shop
Little tip when travelling, if you ever need WiFi, toilet, aircon to cool down etc and you are not using the motorways, McDonald’s have all of it and they are everywhere. Plenty of times on tour I have just found the closest Golden Arches for a drink and to use their WiFi to check something or book somewhere.
I know what you mean about unpacking and packing up. I just came back from a 4 day trip to Devon and Cornwall. Took me ages the first two nights, got slightly better by the third! 🙂 By the way, Tryfan tent did well in rain and sunshine, venting is brilliant.
Hi Peter, glad its not just me, I really like the venting of the Vango, it is just a bit big when packed, but then I do have plenty of room in the tent, so it is a trade off of course. Nick
I’m not sure if you are aware but there are heat shield’s available that use the exhaust fixing point to anchor to. If you could not find a way of having something delivered maybe a metal fab shop on route could make something up just to get you safe there.
Hi Simon, yes I'm aware now... after the horse has bolted. Not sure where I'll be at any time so delivery is a problem. Like the idea of a fab shop. However, things have settled now and I have a better system. But, I'll look into getting something made up! Nick
Enjoying the trip Nick. Regarding the hole in the pannier, couldn't you gaffa tape a sheet of baking foil like they use for a Sunday roast to the underside of the pannier. It might look like a bodge job but it would put your mind at rest knowing that even if the bag catches the exhaust it wouldn't do anymore damage. Looking forward to the next video.
Hi @mr yorkshire, thanks for the suggestion. I did actually have some, but on the inside for the first attempt. Things are OK now, but I'm looking for stores that might sell BBQ grill mats, they cope with temperatures up to 500 F so that would give me peace of mind Nick
a bit of folded up tin foil stuck to the bottom is great for deflecting heat. tape the inside of hole push foil up to it from outside then tape it in place outside edges . might be worth a try. enjoying your trip hope you get more lucky with finding some better food to eat.
Hi @ianunipace, many thanks and I just had a similar suggestion from Mr Yorkshire, things are holding up now, but will probably get some BBQ grill mat as that is good up to 500 F (once I find a store that sells it!) Nick
Brilliant video! Great insight to what you realy going through! I would consider to get a Handycam. - much more battery life than Gopro (limit Gopro for helmet and wide angel shoots) - much better audio performance - no need to dismount action cams, just keep in tankbag - ZOOM option, what you would appreciate later on in the mountains and seaside. -micro SD card what you can easy slide into your laptop Sony Handycam can be changed with normal USB socket, just like Gopro.
Thanks as always Lajos. Handycam or similar with Zoom would be a worthwhile add on, but trying to keep my budget down for this trip. Maybe the Northern leg?!? Nick
@@bikingtravels, I do appreciate your will to keep budget low. But I have a philosophy, when I've decided to buy something I do not wait, as I will buy anyway, so why not have it now.
4:46 Why the heck some old lady is riding a scooter on the bike line xD I will skip the fact that she is without a helmet. P.S. Great vlog I'm waiting for the next episodes! Cheers!
How did you mount your satnav ? Is it the bits that it came with . I've the same bike . No extra bits needed ? Can it quick release to stash in panniers if you leave the bike ?
Hi Jason, I used a "Rally Raid Billet Multi-Mount for 12mm (1/2") Crossbar - RRP 643" to attach to the small bar behind the fairing, routed the supplied cable under the fairing to under the seat, it is then wired into the circuitry so that it turns on and off with the ignition. I had a mechanic do the final wiring in part when he was doing the first service. Yes, the Garmin clips on and unclips very easily for peace of mind. Nick
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us! My wife and I enjoyed your calm and peaceful videos :-)
Many thanks for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Love the music, rather reminds me of the old Jack Hargreaves videos. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yep, looks like Motortek do one specifically, I need to consider luggage longer term post this trip.

You know your side bags you can buy some protective heat tape for them
Just couldn't locate some on the trip but they survived
