Michael Andrew does no endurance training and it shows. He's all about pure speed. I follow his TH-cam channel. Great swimmer but went down the wrong path in terms of training. He strikes a balance between endurance and speed and he'll be the best.

Swimming an IM is hard and the key is not to over-exert yourself in the beginning especially in the fly stroke, its an insanely tiring swim regardless if its 200/400. As the stroke always changes and each swimmer has a different strength at each particular stroke its important to balance it out. Andrews went out so hard in the first 150m that he didnt have enough reserve for the freestyle. Pretty sure he swam a 29s coming home
It’s not even the race strategy it’s the training. He does a training style called USRPT ( ultra short race pace training ) and so he doesn’t have the aerobic capacity to compete in anything beyond 100m. Well obviously he’s still fantastic but he could be the world record holder here

Btw, American audiences see very different angle shots from what we, international audience, see. NBC has very closeup camera angles of American swimmers for many races.

At this day and age, he is the only swimmer that I can think of that cannot do dolphin kicks underwater during turns. Michael Andrew bought a respectable 100 breast back to the team, there was no gold without him...I think he is a hero, look forward to seeing him in the next Olympics!
the official results recorded a split time for andrew's second 50, and he wasn't disqualified, so he did touch the wall. that was just a graphical error
