There are two major problems facing cities today. The first is space. For many cities like Copenhagen, space is limited.
The second challenge, more unique to coastal cities, is rising sea levels. Sea levels for hundreds of coastal cities are expected to rise 1.5 feet in the next 30 years.
That will put 800 million people living on the coast at risk. So the innovators of Copenhagen architecture are pioneering new solutions to these urban planning challenges.
They're taking a fresh look at ways to design Copenhagen buildings, and it includes everything from floating dorms to man-made islands.

Should we build more new islands or floating apartments?

@Locust Swarm It has to do with how you want your skyline to look like, Copenhagens skyline is made up with a lot of spires, and you want see them if the buildings get much taller. Beside making higher buildings makes the streets colder.
No! Do you have any idea how expensive a permanent spot in Copenhagen harbor is? And look at how much it's space it's taking up! That's why they've only made one.
No more pollution and than animals will not be able to go up and breathe

I am a construction engineer and all these concepts are mindblowing when you see it in person. Living in Copenhagen is a bit narrow, not a lot of space to work with, so these artificial manmade islands have been used for quite a while now, just like the Netherlands.
Very cool, makes me want to pursue engineering as a career field again to be a part of something like this or inspire these ideas.

It’s like the floating islands that the Aztecs made. They used it for farming and build enormous cities on them. Nice😀
What about the environmental damage and changes to the marine ecosystem in those waters?

Holmene is not really as sustainable, as they want to make it sound. The "dirt leftover from construction" is actually polluted soil, and one huge issue facing Copenhagen and the region is that the landfills where this polluted soil is stored are rapidly becoming full due to the wave of new development projects in the city. Selling this project as "Hey, we need a place to put all this polluted soil, what about the ocean?" isn't as easy of a sell, but if you look at the funding side of the project, the creation of the islands themselves is expected to be funded almost entirely from revenue from accepting the polluted soil.
That's fine - it's a creative idea for dealing with waste, and if the engineers get it right, it's a decent way to deal with it. But calling it sustainable is insane - it's a strange form of justification when the core problem is really over-consumption. The same goes for the large waste process plant - we literally just finished one of those in another area in Copenhagen, and one of the principles it was based on was that the waste should be local and never imported, due to the environmental impact of transporting waste. They barely turned on the main switch on that new plant before importing waste anyways, because the local waste wasn't enough to run the plant at a capacity where it would be both properly utilised and clean. (For incineration of waste you need a high temperature, otherwise it'll create significant air pollution). So why are we building another huge plant, when we're already importing waste from the UK and Germany just to keep the ovens warm on existing plants?
There *are* a lot of sustainable ideas and projects in Denmark as a whole, but Holmene isn't one of them. It's a creative solution to certain problems, sure. But it's not sustainable.

Building large inland fresh water lakes. And constructing floating platforms on top of the water to grow food in desert climates would be a really interesting idea and I'd like to see happen

This is not a "planet-saving project". This is a "beautiful" example of urban sprawling. It is going to affect the marine ecosystem. Did u ever consider that?

Every city should embrace innovation and development ... it's how we can secure sustainable as well as social qualities and growth, and yet most cities especially in Europe are bureaucratic and conservative.

Are they gonna build it next to Avedøre Holmen? What a great idea... It's not like it's a land reclamation project BUILT for industrial space or anything...

hong kong? we did land reclaimation from sea more than a century. i don't know who is that asking? in fact, even ordinary people here know there is draw back while reclaim land from sea. yes, you claim some land but you kill the sea shore, which, is the nest of breeding sea creatures and fish. alter the channel current will results in soil erosion on unexpected shore which results in flooding, especially when typhoon comes.

Won't these man-made islands like Holmene be the very first to be gone when sea levels rises? I really don't see the point in investing so much in new buildings just a few meters above sea level...

What you forget to tell is that the Urban Riggers are extremely expensive to live in. No ordinary student can afford it.
They are about $700 per month - equal to the state-sponsored support offered to all university students. This means that students have to make the money they need for everything else by themselves. Considering alternatives in Copenhagen, this is high value for money.

Those would not work on the coast though. You can't even build basements under homes in Florida, what on earth makes you think you could build an underground city to help cities directly on the coast? Dumbass.
It is not new that Copenhagen builds on water, that goes back centuries and I think its a miss this video left that out. Likewise some of the water in Copenhagen was actually land - like for example the famous Nyhavn with the colorful houses, that canal was dug out Swedish prisoners or war.

Yeah, it's much smarter to build hundred of houses on water and take/destroy large size of water, not smart to build one tall building on land with hundreds of apartments...

yup, and they are not evoirnementaly friendly. its just a expression they use. its been proved that the old city centers is the most ecological type of built envoirement. the buildingd have been there for centuries, there is no polution in constructing new buildings there, repairing glass, airconditioner because the glass buildings are greenhouses, they look beautiful so people actually take care of them and they are built with local materials (you dont have to spend fossil fuel in the transport of materials) and besides that you can actually tell where you are based on the old buildings. red brick buildings in northern europe, white lime buildings with clay tiles in southern europe, adobe buildings in the middle east, those are real gree buildings, but aren't modern, so architects wont build like that and will criticise who does
Plus those buildings really aren't optimal for an Islamic lifestyle.
