By the way this is the favorite score of Uematsu alongside FF9 (these 2 games are also the 2 favorite ones of Sakaguchi, especially 9). Such love was poured into those.

Terra's Theme is ICONIC, I can't believe you haven't reacted to it until now. Absolutely iconic.
"Balance Is Restored" is more than just credits music... It plays during a 20 minute long ending cutscene which resolves the epilogue of every single one of the 14 main characters of the game, by playing a timed medley of all their character themes, of which you're hearing.
"Im going to stop running."
"Im going to begin all over again."
Terra's theme is so instantly memorable. Maybe the best overworld theme of all FFs?
Its reaaally not.easy to choose between FF6 FF9 and FF2 (yes yes you read that right ) !
For me it has such a 90s feel to it, so as a 90s kid I instantly love it ofc, but 9's has me singing along to it every time I hear it, so I think I lean more towards that.

It's up there without a doubt. But as overmentioned as it is, FF7's overworld theme is iconic as hell.
arguably its between ff6 and ff9, but with that limitation on SNES, to be able to create this kind of memorable theme, ff6 might slightly edge it
Terra's theme is a certified classic indeed. And it shouldn't surprise you, but FF14 has an arrangement of this track, and you actually hear it when riding one of the in game mounts inspired by FF6.
Loat Odyssey reprises this in a masculine and more technological version as the main theme.

You are correct. 4 and 6 simply do not miss. The rest of the FFs have so many great titles, but none have anywhere near the consistency of these two.

This one's probably one of my favorite videos in the channel, Terra's theme is definitely something else. I don't even want to explain why the credits theme is so long and different from what you usually hear in other games, it's better just experiencing it. This game is just beautiful

Terra is arguably the main character of FFVI, given how involved she is with the overall plot and her theme is easily my favourite Final Fantasy overworld theme. It’s such a fantastic, haunting piece that sticks in your mind long after playing. It doesn’t get talked about as much, but Awakening, the more sombre version of Terra’s theme is great too, it’s very fitting during the scenes that it’s used.
VI is one of those games where it's fair to see multiple characters as the main character, but since Dissidia uses her as the game's representative, I think it's officially her.

FFVI features the innate conflict between human civilization and the natural or spiritual world. As a fusion of both, Terra sits at the crux of the plot even if you were to consider Locke or Celes to be the true main characters as far as narration. But I think it's safe to say we all know that the real main character is none other than Mog!
Pretty sure the devs maintain there is no main character in 6. But yeah, I always view her as the main character

I didnt saw the video yet but since i got what makes Jess moved and his overall taste, i always knew he would loove this theme. And i was always surprised that it didnt show on his channel. So today is a nice day.
As a young girl, I deeply deeply loved how Terra's theme is a military march and yet still a "girl's theme". This song 1100% sold me on this game and I love seeing you fall in love real time LOL 😂. Like imagine turning this game on and 8 kids instantly shutting up to watch 3 robots slowly walk in the snow. THAT is the power of Terra's theme.
When we march in our magitech armor through a blizzard at night. An innocent town slowly looms in the distance. Sakuguchi and Nobuo's name flash on screen. You know it's going to be a good time.
The Final Fantasy franchise as a whole has pumped out some of the strongest female characters in history. Every time I hear people complain about how there are no strong female characters in gaming what I hear is "I've never played Final Fantasy"
You know, when you think about how FFVI features all of Dancing Mad, Balance is Restored, and the Opera Sequence, you begin to realize how much a musical genius Uematsu is to have composed all these long melodies for just a single game
90-ish minutes of unique music crammed onto an SNES cart is pretty insane all on its own.
And Forever Rachel is the deepest emotional note in the game. Plus Celes, Shadow, and so many more.
In one of Nobuo Uematsu's interviews, he was asked which FF composition of his was his favorite. Guess what? He answered Terra's Theme and he said he really likes it a lot. In fact, FFVI devs used to hum it a lot while they were making the game. It perfectly encapsulates the story of Terra and FFVI as a whole. In some of the previous Distant Worlds concerts, they perform it as the encore piece in the style of FFVI where they show the video you watched with the marching at the snow while rolling the credits. I hope you check out the Distant Worlds version as well. This is also one of the most highly regarded tracks in the FF community and now you know why.
Balance is Restored is an underrated masterpiece that I believe should be as highly regarded or even more so as Dancing Mad because of its intricacy. This remains as the longest track of any mainline FF up to this day. The way Uematsu weaved together all the important themes (15 if I counted it correctly) in the game that transitions smoothly to the next in one suite is just insane. He didn't just mesh the themes together but he reprised/remixed them that represents the culmination of each character arc and how they fit with the ending sequence. You'll appreciate it better in-game once you have the context. It is also interesting to note that there was actually no official orchestral rendition of Balance is Restored until the PR came out. Distant Worlds covered only the latter half of the track though.
I can't wait for you to play the game. The remastered OST alone in the PR version makes it worth it. They went all out with the FFVI PR OST.
To just add on this, the overlaying of specific character themes like Edgar and Sabin's (who are brothers) or Locke and Celes, those moments just hit.

I think one of the things that made nobuo so great back in these days was how he refused to be limited by the technology. He was like I'm gonna make this sound like an orchestra whether its on midi sound or not 😄

Till this day, my mom still asks me about this song, and to play it again for her on a youtube video. And this is from parents who NEVER payed attention to the music in the games we played. It is THAT memorable. 30+ years later.
I used Terra's Theme as an intro and theme to a D&D campaign I DMd. It became pretty iconic for the players. Just too epic
That first part is a character theme mash up, one of the characters is Mog, a moogle, hence the moogle theme. Also yes, that was part of the opera theme, which is part of the character Celes' theme. Also these credits show each characters epilogue while their theme plays. It incorporates the ending with the credits. It is a trip.
Bro. You have GOT to hear Shadows' theme from this game if you got an itch for that western vibe. It's straight up Morricone. You already heard a touch in the end credits theme. The double sunglasses was a power move btw

Terra is in fact a character. Arguably the main character, though it's an ensemble cast and Square maintains there is no main character. But yes, Terra's Theme is used for the intro (or at least a variation on it) and the world map theme. It is absolutely wonderful and iconic, and I'm so glad it's convinced you to play it, because it's my favorite in the series and has my favorite soundtrack.
As for Balance is Restored... God I love this track. First of all, it's a bit more than credits. The credits actually don't start until the last... 6-8 minutes of the track. The beginning of it plays over the final scenes in the game, after you beat Kefka. It starts off with a medley of all the character themes in the game for the first half before transitioning into the finale including the credits... I wanted a fully orchestrated version of this piece for so incredibly long. I finally got one from a cover on TH-cam a few months before the Pixel Remaster released. Then the Pixel Remaster gave me a new one. Those were a good few months for me

I love that smile at 1:32...the eyes telling "its going to be one of those" all the while trying to hold back the joy building up to remain critical lol. In line with "You're not alone", when Nobuo cooks with that Ennio Morricone spice we are in for a treat. I lost my sht when I saw this video pop in my sub box, Terra's theme and Chrono Cross - Scars of time are just the GOAT when it comes to video game intro.
Terra's theme is my favorite FF song of all time. And I am a lover of FF to the core since I was a kid. Glorious. Simply glorious. Chills, feels, tears, laughter and chills again.
Terra's Theme makes me cry too don't worry. For me it's nostalgia but the brain just KNOWS, regardless of nostalgia, that this song is melancholic. It's about being uncertain about yourself, and in your own courage, being insecure, but going forward anyway. That's who Terra is, that's the kind of hero she is, and the music reflects that marvelously well.
I still remember getting this for Christmas as a kid when it came out. I was at a friend's house and her brother had FF2 (FF4, but was released in the US as 2) and I was enraptured. I used my babysitting money to buy FF1, since we didn't have a super nintendo yet and was in love. I saw that FF3 (FF6) was coming out at Toys R Us and was super stoked. So many good memories.
I once listened to a Final Fantasy podcast where they talk about Terra's Theme, and I think their comment on it sums up why it's so impactful:
"This is, simply put, a melody of a handful of notes that some musicians search their entire lives for--and even successful ones will never find it, something this good. Something this immediately indelible. If anyone out there has ever played Final Fantasy music for someone who isn't necessarily into Final Fantasy music, a lot of it can bleed together for them. But even though there's nothing about the instrumentation for Terra's Theme that stands out from other stuff Uematsu has done, people will recognize this as being separate from the others. It's distinct, it's memorable, it stands out--and that's because it is a melody that's undeniable."
The truth is there are several songs on the level of Terra's theme in FF6. Forever Rachel is the song that gets everyone in the feels.
Terra's Theme is like THE song I think of when I think of FFVI. Powerful indeed. It's easily one of the best overworld themes in the series. I can relate a bit to the song feeling instantly classic. I remember the first time I heard it, and it just felt nostalgic somehow. There was just something about it sounding so triumphant, while also sounding a bit melancholic and emotional.
Btw I just wanted to point out that are slightly different versions of the song within the game- the version that you reacted to first is the version that plays for the world map. The version that plays during the game's intro is a little bit different, which is the song you listed to second. So even though it was from the Pixel Remaster, it wasn't different solely for that reason.
Love that you can tell the level of banger-itude by the amount of sunglasses worn during the reaction. Terra's theme is excellent definitely double shade worthy.

In many ways, I've always felt like Never Ending Journey from Lost Odyssey is a deliberate callback to this song. I'm glad you finally got to hear it.

ABSOLUTLY !!! Lost odyssey is in many ways an hommage to FF4 but especially FF6 (but its.not obvious visually)
It's the male version of the song. The main theme of Lost Odyssey is a more canonical version of it, arguably.
The cool thing that Nobuo Uematsu does in his FF credit themes is not only slap together a medley of songs (although it is that) but also remix and rearrange them in new ways (like making major key into minor or vice versa, changing instrumentation, making happy sad or vice versa, etc.) So it almost feels like a miniature self-remix album/DJ mix set.
This is now my fav video on the channel. Terra's theme is a certified banger, glad you got to listen to it. Masterpiece of a game and soundtrack, hope you enjoy it when you get round to playing it.
Hironobu Sakaguchi wrote the story of this game as if it were a stage play, which for sure accounts for the dynamic range of the music - as well as why the cast is so large - so when you say it would translate well to Distant Worlds, you’re hitting the nail squarely on the head!
Uematsu kills it, and is definitely the reason I listen to prog in my adult life.
this is the reason FFVI is one of my favs, actually for the longest time it was my absolute favorite, but then played FFXIV, but pretty much for the same reason, the story, and the way the music really adds to the experience.
Music didn't actually take up that much space on old consoles, because it was a series of commands rather than actual recorded audio. Sound samples take up space, but the actual music patterns were pretty small. (This was especially true for Genesis music where even the instruments were usually a series of synthesis commands rather than sound samples, though it did have sample capability too, usually used for drums or specific sfx.)
The reason why the ending credit song is long is because it also includes every character's theme, that you have by the end of the game, played out. 14 characters in total!
Classic queens blood music in the background I love it.
Terra s theme is one of those tracks that gets stronger the more you're pushing the story. Just the same way with cosmo canyon in ff7 or someday the dream will end in ffx
Balance is Restored is a giant medley that incorporates the leitmotif of all 14 playable characters in the game. That's why you were able to pick up on Terra and Celes' themes in the ending.
I'm glad you're going to play the game. IMO, being nearly 40 years old, FF6 is the best game I've played, and I've replayed it a lot, and it does so much perfectly. You're 100% going to love the music, mostly cause it's set music or leitmotifs adjusted to fit scenes. Terra's theme resonates so much with me that, in FF14, there is a mount that plays her theme, and though I might have hundreds of other mounts, it's the only one I use just because of that.
Also, order of release in the US was FF1, FF4 (released as FF2), FF6 (released as FF3), FF7 (released as FF7), then 2/3/5 got brought over later. So for FF6 (3), I had played FF4 (2) and liked it, so was definitely looking forward to FF3, but I wasn't even a teenager when it came out.

Edit: Believe it or not, I know of one version of _Terra's Theme_ that has lyrics.
But I don't know if it was supposed to be there from the beginning (like _Aria di Mezzo Carattere_ is composed with singing in mind) or if they added them later for their concerts.
The kind of lyrics that make sense at the end of the journey somehow, but that just sounds like a beautiful poem without the context.

As much as I love Terra's theme, Searching for Friends is the one that hits me right where it hurts. Such an emotional piece.
Late to this, but Terra's Theme has always been one of my favourite pieces of Uematsu's work, and an overworld theme I hold in highest regard with another of his I find simularly iconic and the way I found your channel over a year ago now: Never Ending Journey from Lost Odyssey.

Watching someone react to this is pure magic. As someone whos core foundation was formed by SNES and PS1 RPGs, it was amazing seeing the appreciation. When he smiled at Terra's theme, when he recognized the opera music, and when that Shadow music hits was fantastic.
I love love love how all the character themes move from one to the next in Balance is Restored and everything happening at the same time. Such a great ending sequence. So, this isn't just credits music but the actual ending stuff of the game plus credits. The part you heard before was part of the opera, yes.
The version of Terra's theme that you listened to the Pixel Remaster version of is for that particular intro, not the overworld. The first original song you heard was for the overworld. Same main melody, different instrumentation.

It's one of the best things civilization has created, alongside Final Fantasy 4.
FF6 is peak Final Fantasy that unfortunately gets overshadowed by 7 despite having the superior story. So many memorable moments in that game that stick with you forever. I sincerely hope you weren't joking when you said you decided to play it. It's one of those games everyone should play at least once.
I'm so sad VI still hasn't received a port to modern consoles like 7 - 10 have. Doesn't even need to be a "HD remaster" at this point, just please port it Square :(
@@ASSEMBLOTRON It does now, thanks to the remake. But OG FF7 was a mess with lots of missing details and questionable writing. Even with 2 additional games and a movie they failed to properly cover these issues. FF6 on the other hand had all its bases covered. The only reason people think 7 is better is mainly because nostalgia, and that most people lack the ability to analyze all the information given to them and discern what makes sense and doesn't with that information.
Totally disagree. Love FFVI, but the themes and characters of VII along with the bombastic and emotional climax has always resonated a lot more with me. Nostalgia goes both ways.

Every westerner who played FF7 as their first FF/JRPG will always place it above everything else unfortunately. FF7 is def a game you see the flaws in AFTER playing other JRPGs that established the platform itself. FF6 definitely has the better cast and story for me, and would shine more than FF7 with a remake if handled properly
So glad you decided to give 6 a try - when people are asked which FF is the best in the entire franchise, 6 is considered by a large portion of the fanbase (usually in contention with 7 and 9) and rightly so.
It's the only FF to feature an Ensemble Cast, consisting of a whopping 14 characters (2 of which are optional and not directly involved in the plot)
It's been debated for years who the "main" character is, but the first half of the game is heavily focused on Terra while the second centers around Celes.
I won't say any more than that because I don't want to spoil anything. 6's story and cast TO THIS DAY remains one of the absolute greatest ever and runs the emotional gambit.
The only small advice I will give you is try not to level up too much early on, because the game's progression system rewards you much better if you level up more later on (you'll know when you get there don't worry.)
I want 6 to be remade so badly but Kitase said it would take them 20 years to give it the same treatment 7's gotten.
* Oh and the credits is a montage of everyone's theme songs. Not saying who's is whose.
4 and 6 are BY FAR the best FFs in my opinion. 7 is fantastic, utterly amazing, but it's just not at the same level of absolute God tier that these two games are.

Fun fact: This is Nobuo's favorite "character theme", and to add to it, Terra is Amano's favorite character (Amano is the character designer for the early titles)

If you like Terra's theme there's an O.C. Remix of it called "Terra in Black" here on youtube that's a really damn good mix featuring some awesome electric guitar work with some lighter instruments mixed in here and there, gives it a hell of an awesome feel that brings the best of the chills down the spine.
As far as I know the Marching Band style of percussion is called Cadence percussion.
If you want to do a song from FF1, Matoya's Cave is a great one (also there's an FF14 version called "The Mushroomery" as well as an AMAZING Black Mages version of Matoya's Cave with a sick electric organ solo I know you'd absolutely love)
I love Terra's theme... it never fails to make me cry every single time i listen to it
One of the best parts of the character medley is where Celes' theme plays first, another character theme plays with hers as a harmony, and then the other character's theme plays in a very majestic outro for that phrase of the song. The scene it plays over fits perfectly and matches the two characters and how their relationship evolves over the course of the game. Cannot recommend the game enough as it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played and the first FF soundtrack I ever owned. I asked for it for a birthday present back in junior high back in '98 and we had to import it through animenation. Good memories of just digging in the soundtrack for all three cds over and over again.

While I will put out there that Balance is Restored is among the best pieces in Uematsu's book, it's hard to really appreciate it to its fullest without having at least heard the rest of the soundtrack. It helps even more to have played the game, given how seamlessly Uematsu intertwines key character themes together throughout the entire piece. I look forward to his playthrough.

Maybe I'm biased. But after listening to so many of Uematsu's pieces, I just feel like he's simply the master of melodies and one of the greatest composers of our time.
You were wondering about the size. The SNES sound chip has 64k that (barring some streaming tricks that weren't used in this case) has to hold all the instrument samples and sequence programming for an entire track. If you look around emulation sites you can find "spc" files which are more or less snapshots of the sound chip's memory and an appropriate player program can recreate the music exactly from it. The ending theme is split into two "songs", and the transition is at 25:46 in your video.
If you want to know how they fit in so much, it's about how the SNES makes music by sort of pitching up or down sounds so it doesn't need to store songs, just how to play the sounds it's composed of. It's a sort of layman explanation, but if you're interested, look into it, it's pretty interesting.

I love that the main theme has lasted so long through the franchise and they play it on each staff roll. It's almost like a national anthem.
Terra's theme is not the intro song to FFVI. It's the same melody, but it's not arranged the same way at all, and both pieces convey different emotions.
FF6 was the game that got me into gaming (back when it was released on SNES as FF3) and its still my favorite. To this day I still get chills hearing Terra's Theme

I was 16 years old when I first played it and at school all I could think about was that beautiful game. In fact, I have a particularly fond memory of ditching school and coming back home to play while mom was at work.

Nobuo Uematsu has gone on record saying that FF6 was his absolute favorite soundtrack that he composed, and he really enjoyed doing it.
I love this, as well as the other FFVI overworld theme, "Searching For Friends", both have hope and inspiration written all over them.

31:06 I had been playing FFIV (Then known as FFII in the US) for several years, finding every hidden item and treasure in the game. Grinding levels to accomplish things I thought I shouldn't be able to do. Then FFVI came out (Then known as FFIII. FFV didn't come out in the US until the first port on the PS1, and later another port to the DS and other systems, though I played an English-translated ROMHack before the PS1 release) and I was already a massive Final Fantasy fan. FFVI blew my 14 year old mind, and I recorded the music through a Tape Player so I could listen to it in my Walkman. lol Specifically I recorded the end credits sequence.
Amusing part about Balance is Restored is that it's not JUST the credits rolling, it's all active scenes going on to watch too. At least for me, when I first played through ff6, it was the first game I had played that had ever done that sort of thing. I suppose unsurprisingly, it became one of my favorite ending sequences to a game ever too because of it. Probably didn't hurt it was also my first FF I ever played, so I've always loved it, and it's still my favorite. Even if I can't say it's the best one anymore. (That's 14 now.)

Now i watched and what a video thank you. Again, since i knew how fond you are for Enio and watched you playing Wild arms, i was pained to discover that Terra's theme wasnt there because the passion poured in it (and the whole soundtrack) made this games not only iconic but also magical and nostalgic (even if you never listened to it). I also accepted the fact that you will never play it because it didnt appeal to you but now im moved. Its up there for me near FF9 10 7 and even 8 (yes yes). Its not a dazzling intrigue but it is a dazzling ambiance and endearing cast (most of them :D ).
5:10 well it also has one of the best forest themes in gaming history.
Btw, you are yet to discover another western themed ost in the game !

Glad you're going to play FFVI, I'm sure you won't regret it. Your reaction to Terra's Theme reminded me of your reaction to You're not alone from FFIX. Both songs are pure classic and among the best from Nobuo, imo.
As for FFVI itself, I don't know which one is better (in terms of music) though. There are some songs that I prefer the classic SNES version and there are songs that I prefer the Pixel Remaster version. I guess Pixel Remaster is still an overall better package because of its quality of life features, but I definitely recommend you listen the SNES ost after you finish Pixel Remaster.
Until Remake came out, VI is the only game I had dreams about.
It's not just the intro, but the world map theme. The moment I stepped outside Narshe for the first time, I just stood there for a good few minutes. It's one of the best world themes ever made.
I played VI after I played VII, VIII, IX, and X. The music in the game is clearly limited by the hardware and still fits perfectly to every situation and manages to move you to the core. Terra's theme is one of my favorite opening themes in all of gaming.
I hear ya on 'instant classic'. After hearing it (Terra's Theme) once it's like you've always known it; like meeting up with an old friend for the very first time somehow. Nobuo has a way of doing that with his music.

Terra's theme is one of my favourite themes in gaming; I'm not FFVI's biggest fan but the soundtrack is one of my favourites. This actually plays on the world map, and with the sweeping, uplifting melodies it is a wonderful fit. A lot of people like to lump anything with this melody together, "oh this is Terra's theme" for the actual intro or the theme called Awakening, but this is actually her theme. The pixel remaster version you listened to was part of the intro, not Terra's theme.
Hot take I know, but much like One Winged Angel, I don't really care about Dancing Mad and there are many themes in FFVI that I prefer over it.
FFVI's pixel remaster ost is probably my least favourite of the pixel remaster osts. Throughout the PR osts, the intensity of some of the themes or instrumentation is thrown in the wrong direction sometimes, like being unnecessarily intense or subtle, and I feel like FFVI does it worse than the others.
If you ever listen to some FF1, I was thinking as the loops are so short, maybe it would be nice to listen to multiple versions, like the original, the PS1 remake and the Pixel Remaster. I love FF1 and its music, very classic fantasy. Some of my faves are Chaos Shrine, Matoya's Cavern and the Town Theme
There is also a rearrangement of Terra's Theme in Dissidia FF. As a kid it always stuck to me how well it portrays her compared to most ff protagonists.

Final Fantasy VI was released as Final Fantasy III originally in the west. I lived in Europe when it was released and I imported the North American version, because it was not released in my country at the time. At that point I had only played a NES FF game (I think FF I) and FF IV for SNES (sold as FF II at the time) I've since played everything up to X + XII.
I've played trough FF VI multiple times over the years, in various different versions. It's still easily my favorite FF game. I'm sure part of that is nostalgia, but it also really pushed the envelope at the time. There is so much extra stuff that they didn't really need to do or they could have gotten the story across with much less, but they always went the extra mile.
"People love FF6!" Got that right! :) My favourite game of all time. And yes, I was there in 1994 when it was first released, and it was mind-blowing at the time. It was magical. It was like nothing else I had ever played at the time. I started with FF4, then fell in love with Secret of Mana, then played FF6 (FF5 did not originally come out in North America on the SNES).
Oh, look! Its one of my favorite games of all time! ❤ Makes ne remember my childhood young days. Not too long time ago replayed it as Pixel Remaster and it got grown ass man cry like a baby at times. 😭
The Crystal Theme (main theme) started indeed from FF1. They came to Nobuo near deadline and asked him to compose one more track for the intro and needed it quick. Nobuo did it in 20 minutes. For NES it's severely stripped down, but I imagine he had a full notion of how it COULD sound with more time and proper tools.
As for playing FF6, good on ya if you so choose, I'll have to drop by again. (You're going to be well acquainted to Terra's Theme)
