Is This America's First Bus Rapid Transit? (feat. Miles in Transit)

  • In 1948, Providence, RI converted its streetcar tunnel to bus operation. Does that make it America's first Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT? Miles and I are on a quest to find the overdue answer to Classy Whale's longest-lasting question.

If you lower the standards enough to make the 103 BRT, that tunnel counts too. I'll get out while I'm ahead and take second place for Delco. But Miles, if you really want to restore the honor of New England, you have to take this fight to Alexandra Rose (bigmoodenergy), who put the 103 first in her busway video.

As a local Rhode Islander, Providence sorely needs the return of streetcars or a LRT. Providence even had a metro at one point with the Providence, Warren and Bristol railroad. It ran electrified heavy rail services with subway-like frequencies from Providence to both Fall River and Bristol until the late 1930s. A mile long tunnel (known as the east side tunnel) still sits completely abandoned beneath the entire east side of Providence.

Thank you for this, these places are fascinating. The buses are in great condition. One wonders if the shelter is ever used that much, I take it that it would have been from the days of the streetcar.

BRT: Banana Republic Transit A steel wheel is 100% recyclable, and does not require a toxic impervious surface.

Nothing better than a good history lesson, also I agree that this is > than the 103.

While I may admit that this is the first dedicated bus transit right of way I still would not call it a busway due to its short distance. The Septa Rt 103 also does not really qualify as a busway for the same reason. Only a short portion of the old trolley right of way is used. Most of the route is run on public streets, which in most cases replaced the old trolley right of way due to the road authority wanting to widen the road but not preserve the trolley line.

Looking at the video in the tunnel (2:09) is there still a groove in the tunnel floor left over from when it was a cable car, or is just painted lines to help the drivers stay centered in the tunnel?

Is there a fine for anyone who walks or rides through the tunnel who aren't supposed to?

Make sure you know how to limit your iso, depending on the camera, anything above like 1600 iso turns the video to piss.
