they have evolved appropriately, that’s rare for bands nowadays
This song is bad-ass in many ways, but I'm not quite sure 'evolution', a word implying positive change, is the right word to use. This album is simply quite different from their previous albums, donning a noticeably grimmer and heavier sound that i must say i have trouble getting into, except for this track and 'skin game'. There's this 'sameness
' in song structure and melodic progression across a lot of the tracks from this album, in contrast with 'is the is are', a record that I find exciting, more accessible and have purchased multiple copies for myself and my friends. I'd say that the overall sound of an album changes with the phase that the artiste is currently undergoing and the themes they wish to portray with the album.

(wasn't out when i wrote orginal comment) But yeah maybe you're right critiquing my use of the word "evolve". I think a more appropriate word would have been "progressing" maybe?
@@tuckend pardon me - I'm a huge sucker for semantics 😂 I'm sure some people would find the charm of a kitten more endearing than that of a fully grown cat, an entity that has 'progressed', or vice versa. I like the older music of Feist or Caribou better, yet I prefer Tame Impala's newer releases than their older albums. The work put out by people will always change, but one's tastes may not.

Its fantastic! Just randomly heard on a local university station. Best music I’ve heard in a long while.
In any other band a chorus like that would EXPLODE but they don't raise the volume too much. Whether it's due to the singer having soft vocals or just their taste, it's definitely a unique way to release the tension of their verse
It's 100% a matter of taste, nowadays you can mix everyone to be loud :)
DIIV has always preferred an interesting dynamic range for their music. It works really well for them.
Adding some Sonic Youth vibe is a good fit for your music. We'll see with the full album...

Andrew Mastrantoni same here. Felt this album was quite a let down and not on the same level as the first two. Only liked two songs: this one and The Spark. Album sounds quite generic and nothing memorable.

When Sonic Youth meets Pinback
As a structure, this song has a stronger, more definite attitude. It adds an atmosphere similar to that of certain songs from the first albums (Earthboy, Yr Not Far), but still the aesthetics of the two songs from the upcoming one remains. In short: love it

I thought it was a reference to Kenny Blankenship from MXC.
Wikipedia tells of an unapologetic capitalist whose firm's focus on productivity over safety, financial intimidation of employees, and misrepresentations to inspectors led to an explosion that killed 29 miners in West Virginia's Upper Big Branch coal mine in 2010. The lyrics evoke images of fiery death, environmental degradation, the pain of innocents, and trading life for wealth. Going, deeper, the first stanza shifts fault from Blankenship to an economy in which he is merely the result of consumer demand. Even as we look down on his low moral character, we perpetuate his existence by watching videos on devices connected to coal-powered grids. Lyrical poetry operating on several levels, leaving mysteries for the listener to uncover and sounding amazing!

I've always wanted to say that Oshin felt like a spiritual experience for me. Driving anywhere, at a high volume, it felt ethereal, surreal, effulgent, dreamlike yet grounding, full of wonder and hope.
This has been on my playlist all during lock down - such a great track with many layers!

Diiv just killed the shoegaze revival. :-)
they didn't. they had a strong position in its revival and supported that giant for years (pretty much their entire career as a band up until deceiver).
Slowdive released an album 2 years ago after a 20 something year hiatus and other prominent shoegaze bands are releasing new music and touring more than ever. Just because diiv took a different route by not drenching tracks in reverb and modulation doesn't mean other artists in that scope of sound will too. we have plenty of other amazing shoegaze artists to love at home & live. the revival isn't dead yet my friend
Chris Greene dude druun pt 2 is one of the sickest tracks I've ever heard. It's so overlooked. It's the perfect suite song for that album. Sonically it's built so massive and achieves this field of sound that is so hypnotic and captivating

Really dig this band and this song in particular. Those dissonant notes on bridge from 1:00 - 1:22 (and again at the end) are awesome - something tells me they've been listening to old Sonic Youth records.

This is fuckin rocking. Very nice. Seems to be criticising capitalism though. The Earth is ownerless? Then that includes everything that is made from it including guitars and silicone chips. A bit like selling Che Guevara merchandise really. Rich in irony. Great sounding track though.
