  • Vermilion Lake Association's Live LoonCam enables you to see a pair of nesting loons making their home in a small bay in far northern Minnesota.
On May 14, Mom Loon surprised us and built a nest in a clump of bushes and reeds and laid an egg. On May 15, she laid a second egg and for weeks she and her mate took turns incubating and guarding the two eggs. After mink attacks and rising waters threatened their nest, we discovered on June 2 that one egg was missing. On June 14, the second egg survived another mink attack but then cracked open. The loons were distraught when they could not locate a chick in the hours that followed.
On July 4, the loons started over, building a nest on a small island nearby that gave them higher ground. Mom Loon again laid two more eggs and began protecting them. On July 10, however, three otters launched a sneak attack and rolled one of the eggs off the rocky island and into the water. Four days later, after being frightened by eagles overflying their bay, the loons abandoned the nest and their fourth egg. Only three hours after leaving it unprotected, the three otters came back and pushed it over the edge of the nest into the water.
There has been no sign of the loons since July 14 at their nesting location, so we're moving the Live LoonCam to a second location the week of August 12 that will give us a look at the open waters of Lake Vermilion where the loons have been swimming.
