  • Superman is a video game programmed by John Dunn for the Atari Video Computer System (later renamed Atari 2600) and released in 1979 by Atari, Inc. The player controls Superman, whose quest is to explore an open-ended environment to find three pieces of a bridge that was destroyed by Lex Luthor, capture Luthor and his criminal gang, and return to the Daily Planet building. The game world is populated by antagonists such as a helicopter that re-arranges the bridge pieces and roving kryptonite satellites that cause Superman to revert into Clark Kent.
    In this video, Jon gives this Atari 2600 superhero game a play and shows off the subtle elegance of the map design and simplicity of the gameplay overall.

    Superman was a game I never understood as a kid. Wanting to understand it, it was one of the first games I got for my 2600+ (I'm up to over 80 carts since Xmas, so yeah...) and I'm so happy I took the time to learn how it works. It's now among my top 10 favorites. It's a bird! It's a plane!

      Yes. Didn't have a clue what I was doing when I was playing it 40+ years ago. Now I have a much better appreciation for how good it is. Definitely one of the best 2600 games from the 70s.

      This game and E.T. are two games that are so underrated. No one understood the mechanics of E.T. because no one took the time to read the manual. Everything people didn't understand was explained perfectly in the manual. Once I read that and understood what the player was supposed to do, it was a pretty decent game. I think Superman also fits that category. Now, Raiders of the Lost Ark, on the other hand, was also a hot mess of a game and the manual didn't explain anything. But, if you were able to figure it out, it was another decent game. It just made you work for your fun. 😂

    • @keithbk
      @keithbk 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jacobmetz3267 E.T. is pretty easy to understand if you think of it as a cube. The top is the field where you land/take off. The bottom has all the buildings. The 4 sides are the pits. Once you get the hang of getting out of the pits, it's not too difficult, but it is a race against time.

      I would play ‘ Stab myself in the eye with a butter knife’ Before I would play the Nintendo 64 version of Superman again. I remember buying it for my nephew & still to this day, the look of sorrow/fristration/boredom on his face while he played it haunts me. I still tell people ‘to my utter dismay I mentally abused my nephew cuz u gifted him Superman64”

    By 1979 Atari VCS standards, this game is fantastic. Also the box art has to be in the top 5 of all time great 2600 box art. This is the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earth's Superman we grew up with in the 70s.

    The greatest thing about this game is that the better you get, the shorter the game. I remember getting tired of playing games like Pac-Man because I was good enough to play those games for hours and just didn't want to spend that much time playing. But with Superman, you could play for literally less than 60 seconds per game when you got good at it.

    I spent my kid money on E.T. I actually beat it. The pits are frustrating but as with anything you what side of the pits to enter. and you memorize what screens are where even if you didn't know it was supposed to be a cube....now that you mention it. It has the same qualities...screens with items, bad guys who take it away....it really is the same as both the ones you mentioned...always wondered the hate for it.

  • @BoomGiggity
    @BoomGiggity 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    Superman has a slight glitch. When you first start the game, instead of flying down to the phone booth, use your vision to look around. Sometimes, he'll skip the phone booth and you can fly straight to the bridge and you can immediately start scooping up bad guys and bridge parts. The bridge will blow up into parts, but will still be intact at the same time.

    • @pezjohnson
      @pezjohnson 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I used to speed run this (before I knew it was called speed run) when I was about 7 or 8 when I found out about this. Just x-ray look around for a few seconds. When the timer starts running, when you dip down, just don't hit the phone booth.

    Despite the fact that I did not understand how to play this game back in the day, it was still a game I played a lot. I was around at 6-8 years old at the time, so I was still learning to read AND I was also learning English (native Spanish speaker). In time, I figured out how to play EXCEPT for turning back to Clark Kent and going to the daily planet. At age 9-ish, I was trying out other games and this game was just one I had. It was not until relatively recently that I learned how to beat the game (and ET interestingly enough) from a different TH-camr. Thank you for the run and for the memories. I really did love playing this one.

    What makes this game fun to me is that Superman does Superman things. He flies. He can’t be killed; it’s why the gangsters never fire the tommy guns. He has x-ray vision. And he has heat vision (how do you think he puts the bridge back together). It’s only a race against time, as any classic Superman story should be.

  • @deeesher
    @deeesher 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This was always one of my favorites! Admittedly, there's not much to it, but it was a great source of shutting off your brain fun. I also enjoyed "cheating" on this one! I don't recall how I did it, but at the very beginning, if you don't go to cross the bridge, it won't explode. It's been a loooong time, but either I stayed as Clark Kent, just NOT going to the bridge scene, or I stayed as Superman (somehow) and just flew around the city, never seeing the bridge explode.

    There is a cheat/bug in Superman I found that I think few people know about. Start the game, just exit the phone booth and move up. Now pause the game (by using game select). During pause, it will cycle through city screens, on the third screen you will be standing on top the subway entrance. Move the joystick to go out of pause mode and you will be in the subway. Move to the left one screen which is the Daily Planet and win the game in 5 seconds!

    This was one of my favorite games on the 2600 when I was a kid. And still is. You can play it and have fun even today. And is the first game I knew had a pause feature, that I used quite a few times for lunch time and such.

    One of my favourite games ever. I always played this prior to any other game as it could be finished easily in 5 minutes. I still play this now at least once a month on my Atari 2600. Absolute classic.

    I used to find several glitches and Easter Eggs back in the day. One involved capitalizing on the Select button, which paused the game. While paused, the screen jumps around to other scenes. It turns out that if you resume the game while Superman (or Clark Kent) is superimposed with a subway entrance from another screen (or even the Daily Planet), you can effectively warp there, despite it not being on the screen you originally paused from!
    With just a little creativity, you can have the broken bridge screen warp Clark Kent to the left. And with even more creativity, you can bypass the initial phone booth at the beginning of the game! Doing this gives you a crippled version of Superman that tries to fly but immediately goes back down. But you can still travel south, just never north unless you're in a subway or the Daily Planet.
    Furthermore, you can even find the broken bridge pieces inside the subway if you use the above tricks to bypass the bridge screen. Doing so will allow the coexistence of an intact bridge plus the 3 pieces! And even funnier still, you can do the initial transformation to Clark Kent, warp to the Daily Planet and "win" the game, even while Lex Luthor's minions are still roaming around!
    And if you're still creative enough, you can "win" in just a few seconds, or even zero seconds!

    I loved this game as a kid! My dad had to explain to me what I was supposed to do. I was shocked years later when I found out that a lot of people didn’t like this game. I never knew about the subway shortcuts, I always just avoided them. Good to know!

    I had this game, and similar to what you do with instructions, I don't throw them out, I just don't read them. So I just go in blindly and see what I can do and figure it out. Until I get stuck or so frustrated I might break something, I'll crack out the instructions to help me figure things out. Once I completed Superman back in the day, I don't think I ever turned it on again.

    I played a ton of Superman as a kid. I remember getting frustrated the first time I played because I didn’t know how to finish the game, and It took over 20 minutes to beat it. After I got the hang of it, my best time was 1:45. It’s the only game I’ve ever ver tried to speed run, and I used multiple exploits to reduce my time, like resetting the game each time the counter started at 1 instead of 0, and not waiting for the bridge to explode before running to change back into Superman. Fun times!!

I played it recently and it was amazing how it was still ingrained in my muscle memory! I was able to beat it faster than this video!

    Just good game design. Would be great if this game was revised with modern day graphics and sound. I think it would be better than many other Superman games that flopped over the years.
