    New sub here!! Awesome idea. I thought about the aquarium heater as I do have an indoor 125 gallon aquairum for my Black Oscar. I figured we could use the same heater outside. I do not have a Koi pond yet but this is part of my research before I actually start digging my own pond. Thanks, doc!!!!

    Thanks for the video. I have a wire cage to protect my small 4-10" koi near Panama City FL from all the predators including alligators. The cage is 2.5'Tx3'Wx8'L and is in a 1/2 acre mud pond with about 30 koi fish in the cage. The cage is actually 3'T but I have it out of the water about 6" for the koi to be able to feed. See any problems that I might have in winter? The larger 14"+ koi I have swimming the pond will be in the deeper 7' water in the winter but didn't know it 2.5' deep water is okay. I know freezing over isn't a problem.

    Where could I find that little cage thing that you have around the heater?

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cage is made from the lids of plastic aquariums. Allow enough space to prevent direct contact with the heating elements to avoid melting the plastic.

    Dr, how do you deal with Nitrate In your pond?
    I noticed there are no plants or bog area.
    Eventually the nitrite will accumulate?

    Hey my go to guy!! It’s an emergency!! I’ve had my cichlid tank now for over a year. I got a little behind on my maintenance due to my newborn. But I noticed a bunch of snails in my tank 😩... how do I get rid of them? Thanks?!!

    • @potatotato4727
      @potatotato4727 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm very late and you probably dont need this but... aquarium snails are harmless. In small amounts. I say that because they are living things too, they produce waste and die and can cause ammonia spikes. But overall, they are quite harmless. You get snails If you dont properly quarantine fish from a pet store (most commonly has "pest snails" that go into the net when the fish is caught) also, not quarantining plants or drift wood. I had a chunk of driftwood with snails I quarantined. I removed any plants (they are more sensitive to bleach) and I did a bleach dip for the wood for about 20 minutes. I then boiled it for another 20 to make sure all eggs and snails were dead. (The wood will darken back up soon) the plants I dipped for about 30 seconds to a minute, repeatedly then put them in very dechlorinated water in between. For the fish being quarentined... if you see any snails add copper to the water. Scaless fish might be sensitive so watch out for that, snails hate copper so they should die. It's always wise to quarantine your fish or plants and driftwood for up to 2 weeks to catch any snails or diseases that could spread to your display tank. (I am snail free with driftwood, live plants and fish still to this day) :)

    How fast can I heat my 100 gallon stock tank with a 500 watt heater. The lowest temp it will set at is 70 degrees F and my tank is 52 degrees F.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      May I ask why we are needing to increase the water temperature?What do you stock in the tank?
      The rule of thumb for fishes is about one degree Celsius per hour. But to bring it up a total of ten degrees Celsius (52F is 11C, to 70F is 21C), I'd recommend to do it over a minimum of 3-5 days.
      The heater thermostat can be set to the lowest as you had suggested, using an external timer to limit the amount of time the heater stays on. Otherwise, use a very low wattage heater to make the temperature increases slower.

    This might be an ignorant question but everytime I hear about fish and people go fishing they always say that fish don't feel pain and yet I've noticed in your videos that use anesthetics so that your fish won't feel uncomfortable. Does that mean that fish do feel pain??

    Sir, can you help me finding out the male goldfish of my aquarium. If you can then i will send you pictures of my gold fishes. One of my female fishes are ready to breed. But I am unable to identify the male one. Thanks in advance.

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Male goldfish will have "breeding tubercles" form on their operculum (gill covers), and thickening of the leading edge of their pectoral fins. These are due to keratin being produced on top of their normal skin.

    Another? Puffer's loss of balance..I took mine to a vet many years ago and she tried to deflate is swim bladder. Nowadays I see puffers are popular..and they are dying of that same bloat and lack of balance. THEN you have people who are triming the beak on their puffer..seems traumatic for the fish.

    Hi Sir is it safe to use activated charcoal in aquarium

    • @thefishdoctor8746

      Safe in most cases, but has been implicated in development of head and lateral line erosion syndrome in several marine species. Freshwater equivalent is hole in the head disease. See

    I think you need to paint that floating white Styrofoam black because it absorbs 99.8 percent of heat from the sun not like a white one which defects 99 percent of heat making the pond water cooler so putting a white Styrofoam is much more ineffective than putting a black one non the less it is a pretty darn good idea tho so cannot overheat the pond

    Fish Dr,Watch the King of DIY and his vid of a dying and suffering Asian Arowana. He says the fish "Broke its back"..I say hogwash. Also- why when you look do you see claims they never live past say 8 years,when in the wild they are said to live 50 years?
    They are ultra expensive fish and noble fish,and I'm tired of seeing various vids on TH-cam of them twirling in the aquariums to their death. WHAT is the cause of Asian Arowana's demise?
