The first vehicles actually sold to people were all custom jobs, built to the buyers specs. Up until the Ford Model T standard practice was for the builder to make a chassis with engine and then the buyer bought the body from a different company, a coachbuilder, who then mated the two together. Sometimes buyers just bought a chassis and would then get their own body and mount it up themselves. Some bare chassis still exist today that never did get any bodywork. As a Land Cruiser J40 series enthusiast, I love what you've done with the rig. Because off-road vehicles are toy cars in full size."
Like the infamous John “Hannibal” Smith used to say I love it when a plan comes together. Love the look and the name of the FJ. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
Your talents and creativity are truly amazing, along with your humble demeanour. Never mind about what others think. It only matters what you think is awesome for you. I think you were right. The bed did need shortening, but I didnt expect the bed narrowing at the tailgate. It is very very cool. Great job!!!
Paul, Your skillset is becoming legendary! And as a Toyota loyalist too, I prefer “Yota”. I see your work as the preservation mixed with the forward thinking and innovation of Mr. Toyoda himself! Always evolving and always improving.
Keep the “T O” portion of the tailgate around. If you ever change you mind about just using the Y O T A part. Obviously you can shorten the spacing of the lettering to fit them all. I would love to see a small Yoda character peaking out of the O, swinging from or sitting on top of the T.
It makes me happy that you edited the part where Graydon was jumping out of you FJ45 build. Gotta watch out for others as you go through life and editing of your video is proof that you honestly do care. Michelle you do good work for your part in Fab Rats.
Awesome build, and don't worry about making the FJ45 purest mad, it's your truck do what you want with it and the purest can pound sand and go buy their own. Nice build!
Thanks again for the video folks. I love how the family is involved so often, they'll remember that as long as they live, especially now that it's recorded. While some purists get fired up about folks who modify anything older, I'm of the opinion it's your rig to build how you like. Thanks for taking us along on the builds and all the best to you all down south.
"YOTA" is great! Project is really coming together nicely! It's great to see you take the time to teach your son how read a tape measure, I can't tell you how many guys I've hired that don't know how to read one. Keep up the great work! 👍🏻
When you work on things that others have built, (even at a factory), you understand about things like access. Build it like you are the one that will need to work on it at a later date.
Looks great, also love the way you are teaching your son to do real world, practical use for the math he may or may not learn in school. Thats a piece that is often missing for folks because they aren’t given the opportunity to use it at home. Way to go Paul, your doing it ALL right. Love the Yota.
Can't wait to see Yota crawling around. Great choices. I am a purist (mostly vintage Suzuki lover), but i love when function meets creativity. And when a person like you needs EXTREME functionality that's what happens: a Toyota must be reborn into a YOTA. Evolution. Love it. You nailed it!
I love it when the real boss shows up in the shop! She definitely is one cool wifey. Your way of teaching the kids is awesome lots of us learned from our fathers this way its very warming to see! This is how you read a tape measure today you learned a valuable thing. From a FJ 2007 guy YOTA is great btw! Epic build !
I gotta say. Your channel has quickly become my favorite. Great content with genuine people is rare these days. Just bought a shirt too. Take that FJ to this years RattFink reunion in Manti and I’ll see you there!
Love the Yota and can't wait to see its finished look! Camera men have to go through a apprenticeship before they get paid don't they? 😆😀 Just joking he did a very fine job and also got some tape measure training. The biggest thing was he got awesome quality time with dad. This is such a great channel to watch. Thank you Paul and Michelle for letting me hang out with you all now three times a week.
A true craftsman. Let those that want a pure FJ45 watch another channel. You are making a great crawler. I can't wait to see it in action. Well through the youtube lens. Maybe one day I can make it out to Utah again and drop by and see ya. I was representing team fab rats on our overlanding trip the first of October. I even have a picture of me with my red fabrats shirt on. Love this channel.
Lol! Michelle welding in flip flops is recipe for disaster!! Your project looks amazing Paul!! This is for YOU and the FAMILY, not for a customer so you do what you want and dont worry what everyone else cares about. So looking forward to seeing what it looks like when its finished! You really do great work and it totally shows!
YOTA is perfect. And all the cutting and wedging is great too!. Your truck, your build, your choices. Its not like you are cutting up the 1907 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost or some other historically significant car. This is "just" another Yota ... no different than all the modded and reworked 60's & 70's muscle cars out there. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Paul I used to be a purist when it came to vehicles but found they are a lot more fun when you do what you want to them. You built it for you, nobody else. Nice work.
Absolutely LOVE yours and Matt’s channels. Subscribed to Matt way back when he was at 50K subscribers and your channel not much later. My wife surprised me with one of your hoodies and I love it! Good weight for New Mexico. Regarding “Toy” or “Yota”, I’m 51 now with American made vehicles but all I had in my youth were Toyota’s. I’ve had ‘76, ‘86 & ‘89 trucks and an ‘83 Corolla Tercel. Loved them all and my vote would be for the FULL Toyota. Soooo refreshing to watch NON-POLITICAL videos so keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll keep watching. LOVE the channel and the content.
I've seen many TOY's so definitely YOTA. I just got onto seeing your channel and have been binge watching for a week now. I was president of a 4X4 club in Canada some many years ago so love what you're doing.
YOTA is just perfect. TOY wouldn't cut it, too generic. Besides "the yota" just rolls off the tongue much easier. Paul, I always enjoy watching you pull something apart and reassemble it in some new form. Thanks for the vids and happy welding to you. Cheers from E. Ontario
This looks great Paul. Forget the purists. It's your truck to do what you want and it's all about making it into something you can have fun with. Keep the YOTA, but also keep the TO around for potential future uses. Watching you do the cutoffs made me think of a recent video that Fireball Tools did showing that doing plunge cuts makes the disc wear out a LOT faster. He instead showed that doing a few shallow cuts to get through the metal makes the discs last 10x longer. But, it does take 2x longer, so that's something to consider.
It is amazing how you use your "eyecrometer" to center YOTA in the tailgate. Then taper the sides to match it exactly. THEN tell all of us you did it just so the fenders wouldn't get damaged while rock crawling. Anyone watching you wearing the new welding jacket could think this is your FIRST day on the job. Until they observe you in action. All this and you are a teacher too. I am anxious to see how you design these fender wells and rear bumper. Will they be flat fenders, like Papa Dars, with the bumper flared like you did on your son's ride?
Ya know i would've loved to see it completely restored because of it's rarity. But it's going to look cool all modded up when you get done with it. As you said it's yours and this is what you want to do with it. I am jealous of your imagination, talent, and skill. I do so enjoy watching your vids! Happy Crawlin!
“Yota” suits it build it the way you wanna build it if it’s your own project you only need to worry about it if you’re building someone else’s love how you angled the back of the bed in
I love the Yota! Also, 100% on board with all the cutting. Don't do the "TOY", I think that's kind of lame and that's stuff people always did in the 80s when I was a kid, along with body lift made from hockey pucks and 15 chrome shocks per wheel.
I’m certain that this thing is going to hold up for a serious amount of time. I can see it in a museum in about 300 years as a testament to the spirit of America . 😉💯
Looking good, and “YOTA” definitely works! Only question- are you going to have clearance on the leading edge of the rear fender well when flexed out ?? Can’t wait to see the end result 👍
In Ireland watching you guys Michelle and Paul I've been watching a while now I feel like I know you both your channel is great I've the banter between you guys I think you have a new subscriber like Paul I love working on anything with an engine again thank you for many hours of great videos

Couldn't help to feel a bit sorry for this bed which was still in great condition but I'm sure whatever you do to this truck will end up great looking and super functional. You do YOUR things and will end up with YOUR truck. That's the nicest part about a project like this one, it's unique, it's personal and those are the main reasons why you'll cherish it. Thanks for sharing this build.
I love the YOTA. And I wish I had your skills as a fabricator. Because if I did I would solid Axle the front of my Nissan Frontier and change the rear to a 4 link. But since I don’t it’s just a pipe dream. Keep up the Great Work Paul. I Love the Videos and I’m always intrigued as to what your going to dream up next.
Gotta get that new camera man trained up. He'll be a pro in no time. Any ideas on what color your going with on it? Green? I suggested green on papa dars too. Lol
Bravo! The young man learned a practical skill and not some useless school taught made up theoretical measurement system. And, he learned it from his Dad which makes it even more valuable.

Good friend of mine loved naming our vehicles, back in 1995 when I got my Toyota he saw it and named it Yota on the spot, we lost him a few years ago but still have Yota! Great name Paul!
Amazing, and looks awesome. This talent you have for Fabricating is off the charts. And I agree with the comments, it’s your build, do it your way. I grew up in my family with a FJ40. My brother still has the 1966 FJ40 Dad bought brand new. He has modified it some but it’s still a Toyota. Biggest change was putting a Chevy 327 in it.
Thank you for bringing us, the viewers, into your shop and families life. I love to see the work you do, and how you handle things that arise, but also here to see how you interact with your family, friends and others. Cool to see "Grayders" in the shop watching and helping Dad, but then stopping and taking the time to teach a skill, like reading a tape measure, is amazing. *** Just keep being the Cox family and doing what you do. *** YOTA - good call. I couldn't figure out how you were going to make it work, but you "NAILED IT!"
I love the idea for the build, and respect it, your building it for what you want. with that being said I hate to see the FJ get cut up knowing how cool they are stock! but you will make it just as cool modified to your liking. don't let any hate comments get to ya, keep up the hard work.....side note look how much your channel has grown for the trending page.. lol

Keep the “T O” portion of the tailgate around. If you ever change you mind about just using the Y O T A part. Obviously you can shorten the spacing of the lettering to fit them all.
I would love to see a small Yoda character peaking out of the O, swinging from or sitting on top of the T.
Yea, you can put the YOTA character on the back side of the bed!!
You made the right call doing "Yota". I love everything about this.
I love the fact that Paul has this passion & is so willing to pass it on to others, especially any of you all's kids that might have the bug.
It makes me happy that you edited the part where Graydon was jumping out of you FJ45 build. Gotta watch out for others as you go through life and editing of your video is proof that you honestly do care. Michelle you do good work for your part in Fab Rats.
Yeah I was oh know don't jump
Holy cow, look at that number of subscribers go! We all knew this was coming. The road to your FIRST million is fun to watch. Go Cox family!!!
That bed looks fantastic. I've always wondered how these custom beds are built. Thanks for showing us!
"YOTA" is great! Project is really coming together nicely! It's great to see you take the time to teach your son how read a tape measure, I can't tell you how many guys I've hired that don't know how to read one. Keep up the great work! 👍🏻
Love the way you were thinking ahead by drilling and tapping those rear mounts, not easy to get to.. 👍🏼
And Yota for the win 🏆
Love watching the build, love “Yota”, and cannot wait to see it in action!👍👍👍👍👍😎
That was a very well done show, great content, dialogue and filming.
And…that rig is going to be sweet.
Love Utah !
It’s your rig man do it the way you want and not worry about everyone else’s feelings.
I gotta say. Your channel has quickly become my favorite. Great content with genuine people is rare these days. Just bought a shirt too. Take that FJ to this years RattFink reunion in Manti and I’ll see you there!
Paul always kills it dudes a amazing Fabricator 💪
Love the Yota and can't wait to see its finished look! Camera men have to go through a apprenticeship before they get paid don't they? 😆😀 Just joking he did a very fine job and also got some tape measure training. The biggest thing was he got awesome quality time with dad. This is such a great channel to watch. Thank you Paul and Michelle for letting me hang out with you all now three times a week.
As long as it pleases you, thats what counts! Negativity has no place from others when it is your project. I think it looks great!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
well, it wasn't, but it is now! 😄
Friends,
What fun it is to see Paul’s vision of this build forming.
Thank you,
I love the family involvement in your projects. Memories you kids will have forever! The look is like if Toyota built a CJ8 scrambler. Awesome build!
Great looking Yota! Enjoy watching you create and making things work!
“Yota” suits it build it the way you wanna build it if it’s your own project you only need to worry about it if you’re building someone else’s love how you angled the back of the bed in
You know what we say to ppl who don't like what ya do "down here in Australia" Farrrrk Off & get your own. Love the build I cant wait to see it done.
OMG! That looks absolutely amazing stick with YOTA. The build looks so awesome that thing is going to be a beast on the trail/rocks.
Your KILLING IT!! Love how it’s turning out!! And yes to “ YOTA “ !! ❤️🤙🏼🤙🏼
This thing is coming out siiiiick !! 🤘 Can't wait to see it finished, and the yota is a perfect touch 👌
“YOTA” for sure boss! Winter jamboree sounds awesome……. I’ll have to make it down one of these days let the WJ of mine Eat😂👍
Awesome content enjoy every episode
Terrific family🇺🇸
It's got to be "Yota". That should be what you call it. love what you're doing with it, I cant wait to see it finished.
Wife protection: “don’t hate him, he is a pretty nice guy!”
It looks great! And the “YOTA” is the way to go!
Just curious, are you calling the metric system a theoretical measurement system?
This man is so nonchalant about everything as his creation takes form. Very cool build!
I love the trouble shooting when doing custom fabrication. It’s awesome to see Paul’s thought process and his ability to change up the plan when necessary. That bed turned out awesome. I am so freaking excited to see this thing on the trail.
Hey Paul, Greetings from the great white north, I've been watching your channel since you started hanging with Matt, I absolutely love the work you do, you have a mind somewhat like my own, that is to say you see it in your mind and make it happen, I love the YOTA tailgate, very ingenious. keep it up my friend
Yes, Peter, Paul is not one that needs detailed plans to make something. If he can think it------------he can build it!!!
Love what you're doing with this build. Definatly your best yet.
YOTA - good call. I couldn't figure out how you were going to make it work, but you "NAILED IT!"
Lemme buy the “To” from you! As a sheet metal fabricator, I respect every bit of this build!
I love the idea for the build, and respect it, your building it for what you want. with that being said I hate to see the FJ get cut up knowing how cool they are stock! but you will make it just as cool modified to your liking. don't let any hate comments get to ya, keep up the hard work.....side note look how much your channel has grown for the trending page.. lol
love the fact u teach your kids the way i learned practical knowledge as a kid working on projects with my dad
Keep it YOTA, cause that's what you like by the sounds of it! Then enjoy what you make of the parts you put together to do the job you intend it to do. ( Definitely paint the rig)
Definitely love the yota I can't wait to see this thing perform.
What a cool truck! Great idea tucking in the rear corners. It sure is going to sling mud and snow!
"YOTA" works great. And thanks for clearing up "wedging". All I had to go on was bad memories from highschool.
