    Thank you...I haven't noticed any major weight reduction. But it was all done for better performance, I don't think anything can beat MacBook Air's weight.

    I'd recommend removing the battery first.

      Rob Giordano Yes, I'd recommend removing the battery first, it's still connected to the motherboard and something might happen there

    • @Chrismanningdrums
      @Chrismanningdrums 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unplugging the battery would really only be an issue if disconnecting system operating components. The sata sockets and power rail connecting through peripheral devices are still going to need to flash through a regular boot cycle anyway, and on a side note, even with no battery connected, there is always potential with mac book laptops that static electricity will ground through the chassis even if you are bare foot touching a surface. I replaced my main drive with an additional battery and and my main drive is in the superdrive bay.

      How did you do that? I can't find any guides on the internet to replace the main drive with a battery and have the main drive sit on the CD bay. It's an interesting idea.

    Very nice video. A wonderful guide indeed. I have done the same procedure with my macbook pro except that I have used OWC Data Doubler Caddy and I have put a 1TB Seagate SSHD into it while the other drive I have used is an OWC 240GB SSD. I have never seen a macbook pro run so fast. It boots up in 7 sec and shuts down in 3 sec. The functioning is also very fast.
    I am using my SSD for Mac OS X Yosemite and all the apps and the 1TB SSHD for all my data.

    A few questions...
    1) Other than formatting the SSD you inserted into the Optical Bay drive at 6:30, are there any other steps required to make both drives operate for maximum performance? That is, does the computer automatically use both hard drives, or does it need to be told to do so?
    2)I'v heard of another MacBook Pro user, making one drive store and run the OS and applications and the other for files or whatever. Is there a way to do this, and what situations would it be better? Thanks!!

    • @GadgetsBoy
      @GadgetsBoy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will automatically recognise the drives, the one with the OS will always load the OS and the second will need formatting and you can set RAID if you want . the second question, that's what i did, use the second for storage

I have formatted the drive and it is showing up as a storage option. My problem is that my current standard HDD is 1TB (and it's almost full) and my SSD is 500GB so I would like to move just the operating system and the apps onto the SSD (to make my mac a lot faster) and leave all the rest on the 1TB. How do I go about this without loosing the path files to things like iTunes playlists etc. any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    • @YellowElevator815
      @YellowElevator815 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the biggest issue is the size difference. You could clone ssd perfectly if its the same size or bigger than the HDD. You would have to resize the HDD to be the same number of GB as the SSD, using Disk Utility. If its too full to resize, look into backing up your files manually to free up space, then doing the cloning procedure.

    • @kgardiner424
      @kgardiner424 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      José Nadesan did you figure this out? I did this years ago. But you want to do it a little different. You want to take the old HDD and put it where the optical drive sits and install the new SSD where the old HDD was. This maximizes you’re performance since the connectors where the original HDD where are capable of transferring higher speeds than the optical drive connectors. Make sense? I then installed my OS / applications to boot from the SSD (keeping the files off of it, just OS and applications) with my large files of music, movies, and photos, etc still on the 750GB HDD, and you have to tell the system to pull from that drive for applications on the SSD to access their content. Easy to do. This gives you the best performance while still getting to use your old HDD for large file stores. Your SSD will be what boots the OS and applications and then the data within applications will reside on the likely much larger HDD you have already. Cheap and maximum efficiency for an awesome upgrade. My MacBook boots extremely fast and applications open within seconds. To get the most efficiency you’ll want two SSD’s but that is obviously very costly and they aren’t as recommenwddd for large files stores with many read write changes so that’s while I keep files on the HDD. That HDD still has to spin up for the instantly loading application to offer you the files for access but it’s much much faster since the SSD is controlling the applications / OS performance. I hope that all made sense.

    This is a reply to many commenters who think that is a good idea to take off the battery before this operation: No, do not touch the battery! You don't need to put out the battery for this simple task. Lithium-ion batteries-like the one inside this MacBook - can literally explode! If it is broken and you really need to replace it then you should always make sure the battery is fully drained before removing it.

I just got a new SSD internal hard drive for my MacBook pro mid 2010 and also got a Doubler Caddy (which is pretty much look like yours in this video) to replace the CD drive with my old HD drive. The SSD replacement went well but to place the HD drive into the Doubler Caddy the latter has some extra connection part which stays out when I place the HD. What I mean is this: when I place the HD drive, it sits well there but there is an extra part (like extra connection port which need some extra connection form the HD to match there) there is nothing from the HD drive to be there. Anyway, I followed your instruction but the HDD drive does not appear in my mac anymore. Any help with that? thx

I would love things like the initial boot, safari and a music recording program I use (Logic Pro X) to use the SSD so they load faster, but I wasn't sure if that's something I would be able to easily differentiate between the two drives.
    Sorry, I'm just learning about all this stuff. Thanks!

      For everything to load faster, you would need to install it onto the actual SSD. Basically wiping the whole Mac and installing the OS onto the SSD not the HDD. You'd need to do this for each program so the actual directory of the program files are on the SSD.

    Hey there, just came across this video. If I'm going to be adding an SSD inplace of the optical drive to use as my main Mac OS drive, and then wipe the harddrive already in there to use windows, would the SSD need to be placed in the firsts hard drive spot, or would it work in the optical position?

      +DAFTpanduh it should work fine i the optical position.

    Yo, awesome video! A few things though... can I replace the optical drive with an SSD, and make it the primary drive for booting? I'd really like to keep my HDD, and since I haven't used a CD or DVD in the past 2 years, I can't imagine myself regretting not having it... Also, if you remove your optical drive, Apple warranty doesn't apply anymore...
    Thanks again!

    HI, thanks for the video. I was installing on my MBP13 mid'12, the HDD fit perfectly, but 2 screws protrude about 1/8" where antennas/subwofer should lay flat, so lid didn't close flush. The screws are tight all the way, but it still comes out. Any suggestions? Thanks again for the video, very helpful

    Great video. I followed all your steps but couldn't get the secondary SSD to work.I'm on a 2012 MacBook Pro (non-retina). I just installed a SATA III SSD from Amazon (since several users had commented that it did work on their 2012 MBPs). However, the MacBook Pro will not format the it. Tried to format as "Journaled" as well as "Journaled/Encrypted" and neither work. After doing more internet research I found comments that mention only a SATA II will work on a 2012 MBP. Is this true???

    I installed a second SSD in my early 2011 MBP. This boot one is an 860 evo working perfectly. The other installed instead of the optical drive is a “crucial” one.
    The crucial is extremely slow and often gives read/write errors. After trying every kind of repair, permissions, etc, one post I read stated that the SATA cable is not fast enough to read and write data, specifically on large files , thus the errors. But since it worked for you, am I missing something?

    Question GadgetsBoy, i have a late 2010 macbook pro 7,1. I just removed my HDD and installed a 1T Samsung SSD :) Now I want to replace the optical drive just because I don't use CD's or DVDs and I would like the extra storage. I plan on getting a 750 GB WD Hard drive for about $80 as my second drive. When I replaced my HDD for the Samsung SSD, I used USB to SATA adapter and then used carbon copy cloner. After I replaced the drive, SSD Samsung had everything I had on my mac (documents, apps...etc) plus 700 extra GB. MY question is, do I have to do the same with second drive? use the USB To SATA and carbon copy cloner? or just replace the Optical Dirve and install the HDD and nothing else. I hope my question makes sense. Do i use the carbon copy cloner process again like I did the first time? And if so, do I hold "option" eveytime I start my computer and choose between my SSD Samsung and HDD WD?

    Nice video! I have a question. I'm trying to put a SSD in my MBP Mid 2010 and also keep the original HDD. what's the best way to do this?
    a) place SDD in the optic drive and leave HDD where it is
    b) move HDD to optic drive and place SDD in the main bay
    I want to use SSD for OS and HDD for storage. I'll appreciate your help. thanks!

    Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot. I have a question, If I set my ssd as the primary storage of my macbook pro and I set the original internal HDD as second storage. Can I "shut down" the HDD? I mean, choose to turn it on or off without removing it from the macbook pro? (like an external HDD that can be removed)
    If it is possible, can I expect a better battery life?

    1) does this process apply to an early 2011 MBP?
    2) I'm keeping the original drive but replacing the optical with a Samsung 850 EVO. I'm wanting to transfer the OS to run on the new SSD rather than the old spinning drive. What's the process to do that?

      @GadgetsBoy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Timothy Doecke (Synth Explorer) hey, yes it does. I'd advice that you clone you drive and set your default boot drive to the SSD. or swap them around after cloning so the SSD is automatically selected.

      You can do what you suggested, but as the SDD is faster/more efficient than the HDD I think GadgetsBoy is suggesting putting the SDD in the place of the HDD (making it the primary storage) and putting the HDD in place of the optic drive.
      As a safety measure it makes sense to transfer everything to the SDD before you attempt this so you have 2 disks with all your information in case something happens to one.
      Once you have it in you can delete the stuff off the drive you don't want to house it.
      I've just replaced the HDD with an SDD and what I did was buy a USB to HDD connector and I put El Capitan on my SDD before I put it in my machine, so as soon as I swapped I was good to go!
