I know this was made several years go but this video is still helping people. It just helped me. Thank you so much for taking the time to get this out there.
Dude. You just literally saved me like 400$ from calling a repair man out. You fix worked like a champ!!! My duet had a very easy valve to just simply turn with no tools needed, thank goodness. My filter was filthy!!!! Zero issues now. Thanks a million dude. People like you are amazing.
My husband had a stroke a few years ago so I've had to learn to do a lot of the repairs he normally would have taken care of - your video was spot on! Thank you.
Maaaaaannnnnn listennnnn!!! You just helped us out tremendously!! Thank you so much for documenting and sharing. Very simple fix and saved us from going to purchase a new machine tomorrow, which would've costed us at least $1000! You truly blessed us with this. Thank you so much!! God bless you🙏🏾💯
Just had a repair man out. Cost $100 for him to tell me it was a new pump and suggested to get a new washer machine as the cost for everything and he wasn’t sure it would correct the issue. I found this video and had my daughter’s tank top inside the drain filter. You just saved me about $1500. Thanks so much and just so everyone is aware the smell that comes out just be prepared!!
This worked for us in 2024! My husband used this video to fix our washing machine.. We found a quarter and a paperclip! Thank you so much for creating and posting this video!
Thank you for this thorough tutorial. Your comment about using a wet vac saved me a lot of mess and extra work, as the tub did not drain. My washing machine works once again. I’m very appreciative of your guidance!
Unbelievable! This video literally saved me $800 +. I was about to go buy a new washer thinking the “motor” or spin cycle was shot! Less than 1/2 hour later, the washer was fixed. Thank you Louis for posting this video.
Thank you, you just saved this single mom Christmas money, and an interaction with some repair guy I didn’t need this holiday! I found a sock, ballpoint pen, change and Legos!
This just saved me a lot of money. Great video with clear instructions--and it worked! Also, I figured out how to drain the water without having to pick it up with towels. I just take an old rubber glove and put it around the bottom half of the filter drain when I'm opening it, and let the water fill into the glove. It took about 7 or 8 gloves full of water, and you have to be careful to tighten the knob as the glove starts to fill up but it definitely saved some time with wiping up the floor.
Thank you!!! After the "SUD" and "F21" errors I found your video and opened the drain. I found a sock, a bunch of old coins, lint, and goo. The machine is now working like new. Thanks, again, your video made it easy.
I too am a single mother of 3. I think it's those little socks that must seem to get sucked down to the drain. I could be wrong but I'm assuming they get down there easier.
you are the man. Had an appliance company pulled up and ready to call but said let me try this first. Opened the filter and found 3 small socks stuffed in there. Could have spent $400 on a plumber but instead spent 20 minutes with a socket wrench, pliers and a bucket. Thanks.
I have never left a comment before, but after watching your video and doing what you said to do, you get the first comment. BRAVO! Exactly the problem I had and the fix I needed. Talk about plugged filter with years of crud. Nasty! This should come as a yearly “to do” check when you buy a washer. We had pens, stickers, eraser, juice box straws and built up dirt. Thank you thank you thank you. Saved me hundreds I’m guessing.
Thanks! Worked like a charm. The wet vacuum tip was the key. Tub was full of water. Rags were good but still made a mess since they could not keep up with the water draining out. Plus it was taking a long time. When I put the wet vac. nozzle right next to the drain, it sucked in most of the water draining out and made much less of a mess. I began using the vac. about a quarter of the way in. Wished I had used it from the start. Love the satisfaction of doing repairs myself. Not to mention I fixed it right away so we could finish the load the same night and not have to wait for a repair guy to come do it. I could not have done it without your video. Great instructions. Easy peasy.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!! I just watched it, so I haven't tried to make the repair yet. I'm writing to compliment you on the very well-made video. You spoke loudly and clearly--no whispering or mumbling like most videos. You were concise and did not repeat everything--you got right to the point. Every other video I watched on this subject was useless for the reasons just cited. Your instructions were so clear and complete. Your hands did not block my view as you were showing what to do. I watch a lot of TH-cam how-to videos because I can't afford to hire repair persons. If I could, I'd give you an Oscar for the best repair video in the internet!!
Awesome! Thank you so much for the kind comments! I'm glad to see my video is helping you. It's received a lot of positive feedback over the past three years so I assume the instructions are effective. Best of luck to you!
It took me less time to do the fix than it took to watch the video. Thanks for posting! I found 27.5 cents in my filter. One of the pennies was half gone from corrosion.
Thank you! I just performed this repair.. I had 3 kids socks in the drain!!!! Was easy peasy thanks to your vid. Edit- I have the unit mounted on the drawer, you’d think this would make the water run directly into the bucket I had placed in there. Nope.
You just saved me the cost of a machine. I had cleared the filter of quite a bit of lint, change and a sock but the machine still wasn't working. Thus video helped me find the 2 more socks stuck way up in the hose. All I needed was a wire hanger. Thank you.
Awesome video, thanks for saving me a ton of time and money. I pulled out several pens, screws, $5.90 in change, etc. I appreciate all the detail you provided, especially for using the vise grips to align the filter with the tab.
This is the best video to fix F-21 error on Kenmore washer. I was thinking of bringing in a technician but was avoiding due to COVID situation. This video not only saved me some money but also reduced my risk of being infected. Thank you. The drain runs clean like a firehose.
Thanks so much for the video. I moved into a house with one of these duet washers and f21 errors would happen all the time even though I could see the thing draining. Opened up the filter to find not just one but two children's socks and a broken ballpoint pen! Cleared them out and the machine is working great. Appreciate the time you took to make this video and for sharing this information.
Thank you! You explained everything so well and thanks for the nasty smell warning. My only issue was getting the screws off, the 1/4 driver didn't work for me but I got the concept and figured it out!
Thank you! I got it done all by myself in no time. My hardest part was the socks were way up there so I had to work them down the rubber tube thing with dips in it from the outside initially. And then used my hands. Something a repairman would of charged a lot for I did all by myself as is usually the case. You saved me having to bother any male family members lol.
My dude!! Thank you for making this video. Your instructions were so perfect that I had the right tools ready and got the job done in no time. The washer had been acting up for a while and there was a funky smell that told me something was blocked somewhere but I had no clue what to do. You’re a lifesaver!
Thanks to God for this video. You saved me a repair job. I have water all over the basement floor. But it's cleanable. I definitely recommend a lot of towels.
THANK YOU! You just saved me a repair fee and I found a small sock in the impeller. I had a huge water issue, due to the extraction pump was seized by the sock. All clear and up and running. Thanks again. James
Great video! From despair to Hero in 30 minutes. One note: on the later models instead of hex nut head there are Torx T20's. I put a cookie tray under the washer to collect water but it still gets around, but not too bad. We had a wash cloth, change and small stones in the filter. Thanks.
Your solution was spot on! 15 minute fix, tilted the washer safely back. Pennies, dimes, metal pieces, silt and foul smelling slime were clogging the filter. Once cleared, washer worked perfectly.
Great video! A real life-saver! I have the same model but the drain is different than in this video. My plug was set a little closer towards the front so it was easier to get to, and it was about 50% larger than yours. It was big enough to hand loosen/tighten so I didn't have to use too much force to remove it.
I would suggest tilting the washer backward and sliding a couple of block of wood under the front. That will allow you to put a cake pan under the drain rather than using rags to collect the water from the drain.
This guy is spot on - I have a slightly newer model (I think) but everything wes essentially the same. My valve or filter opening was easier to open and close. Sure enough I pulled a couple of larger items out of the filter and that was it. His comments on the drain cycle did not work for me, the drain pump would not work when the F21 was active. The issue here is when opening the valve, about two plus gallons came out. I had my shop vac running and I tilted the machine back and placed some large beach towels under it - seemed to help. Whirlpool also "splits" the pan in anticipation of this filter being drained - by doing this the water goes to the floor and does not stay in the pan... very nice touch. Erinn Harp - great job, really saved me.
I followed all of the instructions but unfortunately did not have the F21 resolved. I ended up taking off the upper boot clamp (a pain, but doable) and actually found a sock and the opening. The hanger never could get past the float which sits at the top of the boot. After that, still not fixed. I disconnected the pump by taking off the boot clamp and the hose clamp. The pump sounded funky so I took off the 3 screws holding it and the pump had a ton of play in it. Ordered a new pump from repairclinic.com (365 return policy) and put it back together in like 5 minutes once it arrived. Problem solved and it worked perfectly. One key note: the 3 pressure clamps (especially the one at the upper boot) are a pain to work with. I went to an auto store and purchased regular hose clamps that tighten with a flat head screwdriver...saved me a ton of time and aggravation and the hold was much stronger. Would recommend it.
Thank you. We were going to buy a new washer. Saw your video last night. My husband corrected this morning. We had the washer a number of years. We have a handicapped total care child and do 2 loads a day at least.
Great video. Just found 8 bucks, a golf Tee, barrettes and Bobby pins, under wire from a bra, a drywall plug, zipper, safety pins and a tack! Tks so much for posting this instructional.
Thank you for sharing this. We followed your step by step instructions last night and found a treasure trove of coins, screws, drill bits and jewelry from the previous owner. The best part is that the washer works better than before! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you so much! You are a king!!! Mine had tons on leaves, a bottle cap a rusted command hook and so much sludge!!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you!!!!
Brother, you are too cool! Crazy thing I did exactly what you did and it was a sock. The same kind of sock, but a little boy’s sock. God bless you and thank you. I learned something very valuable today.
I want to thank you SO MUCH for uploading a video on this. Our washer had an F21 Code and, after I looked at the manual, I found your video. Thank you for providing a good step-by-step guide to fix this. Took about 5 towels and a vacuum to get all the access water. Ultimately, it was the filter. It was clogged up of who knows how many years of junk and gunk. Once again, thank you! Saved us SO much in terms of money that we would have to pay someone to do this.
Thank you so much for posting this video!!! You just saved us hundred of dollars!! We found a cloth mask and dog hair that had clogged up the entire filter! This video was so easy to follow and now we know how to fix the problem if this error code ever pops up again. THANK YOU!!!🙏
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! I am a mother of 3 and just fixed my washer all by myself!! My husband (and myself) are astounded! The thought of having a stranger in the house during this covid crisis was not a good one, plus who knows how long it would have even taken to get someone here. And it would have been expensive. This was a great video. Again, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! And I almost never post ANYTHING, or even look at you tube!
Thank you for posting this fix that I could not find in the manual. I don’t know why that filter is not put in more accessible area so it can be cleaned regularly. Just few tips that I thought may be helpful to a future DIYer. No matter how tempted you feel, only quarter turn the filter at time to prevent a huge mess in your laundry room. There is a lot more water left in the washer than you would anticipate. I have a drawer under the washer. I emptied it and put a bucket under it to catch water. In my excitement I put the filter out and boy water was everywhere. After the washer has slowly emptied out its water content, remove the filter all the way.
Erinn, thanks man! Saved me the headache of figuring this out on my own. Spot on fix, worked like a champ. I appreciate the time you took to make/post this.
Thank you so much for your awesome video. I want to nominate you for the most helpful video award. We have been having problems with this error code for a while. We figured out how to reset it without fixing anything, but it has been happening more and more frequently. Someone in our household thought the error code couldn't possibly be accurate. Then a different person did a youtube search and found your video and shared it with the code-denier person. CDP just cleared out a bunch of garbage, including broken pencils, $1.50 in change, wrappers, and small squares of fabric. I really cannot thank you enough for sharing your video. Everyone in our house is deliriously happy, except for the young adult who is responsible for 95% of the clog and who attempted to deny his culpability, resulting in multiple recitations of "Liar, liar."
Last time I had to replace that thing. It was a pretty cheap part, but didn’t have to do it this time. This video was quick to the point and easy to finds. Thank you.
Thank you!!! You helped this poor, only moderately mechanically inclined lady navigate a task that she had no idea how to do. I got all the glop out of the filter and am now bleaching the towels I had to use to sop the water up that spilled out (apparently I didn’t let it drain long enough...) you saved me a fortune!!!
We've been getting the same code sort of intermittently but, lately, we were starting to get it on every load and could not get the washer to go through a full load. I didn't find your video Until I searched for the specific model number and then your video popped up and this was the solution for our F21 issue also. Great video and a big help for us. Thanks for taking the time to make it!
This worked like a champ!! My filter was just hand tightened. Didn't need a tool to loosen it. It had things from 20 years ago in it (lego man). I am so thankful you posted this. Saved an expensive repair visit!
Thank you so much! This has been one of the clearest tutorial videos I've seen on TH-cam. About to go fix the problem now. And, yes, I have little girls with socks, too...
Thank you, saved us from buying a new washing machine. We cleared out the drain pump area at first, but it still didn't work. We checked further in the pipe after seeing this video, and now it works again! We too found a little sock lodged in there.
Your a lifesaver , my dad was all mad and confused as to why our washer didnt work! Now i get to be the smart Son who knew exactly what to do , thank you so much 😂❤i give you full credits though
As others have said previously, life saver. I watched your vid about 30min ago and went right to work. Took about 25min total from removing the cover, draining then opening the filter. You were correct, lots of water, needed at least 3 full towels, 1 for cleanup afterward. I also used a shop vac, since there was still some standing water inside. Once I opened the filter, no socks 😂 but there was a ton of wet lint and a plastic ⭐ thanks to my 6 kids lol In any case, thank you for this!! 👍🔧💪
I had a flexible cutting board that I got from dollar tree. I stuck it under the drain into a bowl, drained water out in 1 swoop. Also hubby took clamp off hose connected to drain to remove other debris. Easier than hanger. But thanks for showing us how to resolve the issue! Huge money saver!
look in the drain hose with a light and found a washer sheet blocking flow of water... removed and problem fixed!. So be sure to look deep with light before moving to the pump replacement. Great video!
This video is still helping people in 2024! THANK YOUU!!!
Yup. Thx
I know this was made several years go but this video is still helping people. It just helped me. Thank you so much for taking the time to get this out there.

Thank you. We found coins, a bullet, a wad of aluminum foil and two big screws.
Thank you. We were gifted a washer because of this. And now I know how to fix it.
My husband had a stroke a few years ago so I've had to learn to do a lot of the repairs he normally would have taken care of - your video was spot on! Thank you.
That's great. Thanks for the feedback.
What stroke symptoms did he have? Ill try the stroke excuse on my wife.
5 years later and still works like a charm. Thanks, man. You saved me money and now my wife thinks I'm Bob Villa. Might be getting lucky tonight :D

This just saved me a lot of money. Great video with clear instructions--and it worked! Also, I figured out how to drain the water without having to pick it up with towels. I just take an old rubber glove and put it around the bottom half of the filter drain when I'm opening it, and let the water fill into the glove.
Awesome comment! Thanks for your input and reply. I'm glad it helped.
Good work! Thanks for your input. That's bound to help someone out.
Thank you so much! Found two socks, four coins, numerous beads/BBs, a broken pen, and gobs of slimy fuzz! So very grateful! God bless you!
Awesome! I'm so glad it helped!
I've had to do this a few times. I always slide a cookie sheet under the wash to catch the water.
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you. We were going to buy a new washer. Saw your video last night. My husband corrected this morning. We had the washer a number of years. We have a handicapped total care child and do 2 loads a day at least.
Awesome! I'm glad it helped!
I recommend the shop vac , and instead of the clothes hangers just take tub hose off the back of the pump, instead washer fishing!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great video. Just found 8 bucks, a golf Tee, barrettes and Bobby pins, under wire from a bra, a drywall plug, zipper, safety pins and a tack! Tks so much for posting this instructional.
That's awesome! I'm so glad it helped. You're welcome.
Thanks man. Saved me some coins!! Easy fix. Washer is still a POS
Awesome! Thanks for the kind comment. I'm so glad it helped!
@@WorldBranch I wish I could hug you!
Thank you Erinn! This video saved me money! Crisis averted! On my second round of laundry and no issues!
Nice, Congrats! I'm glad I could help.
Brother, you are too cool! Crazy thing I did exactly what you did and it was a sock. The same kind of sock, but a little boy’s sock. God bless you and thank you. I learned something very valuable today.
Awesome! I'm glad it helped! Thanks for the kind comment.
I'm glad it helped!
Thank you so much for posting this video!!! You just saved us hundred of dollars!! We found a cloth mask and dog hair that had clogged up the entire filter! This video was so easy to follow and now we know how to fix the problem if this error code ever pops up again. THANK YOU!!!🙏
Wow !
Thanks so much !
You make a difference in the life of busy families !
LOL when you refered to the « beast » knob !
Cheers from Québec !
Cheers! Thank you!
That's great!
Thank you! My son and I just finished fixing our washing machine based on this video!
I'm so glad it helped! You're welcome.
Repair guy wanted $550. Looked up the pump and it's $28. Tried this first. Took me 25 minutes from start to finish. THANK YOU.
Awesome! You're welcome. I'm glad I could help.
Great Video! Fished out three socks, 70 cents and a broken pen. Works like a charm now! Thank you!
Great! I'm glad it helped!
I was searching for a new washer. Omg! Thank You for your video! Much appreciated Sir 🙏
Sorry, I just realized I never reacted to your comment. Thanks so much! I'm glad I could help.
Whoo-Hoooo!! Ninety miles to the repair shop. Invaluable how-to!
Awesome! I'm so glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
In nov 2024, this saved me the expensive repair. I am bad at diy stuff but this fix gave me confidence 😆.
Thank you
This just saved us a service call! Thanks! Took like 10 mins and our knob turned super easily on the Duet Steam model.
Thank you, saved us from buying a new washing machine. We cleared out the drain pump area at first, but it still didn't work. We checked further in the pipe after seeing this video, and now it works again! We too found a little sock lodged in there.
I'm glad to see it helped!
Your a lifesaver , my dad was all mad and confused as to why our washer didnt work! Now i get to be the smart Son who knew exactly what to do , thank you so much 😂❤i give you full credits though
Awesome! Thanks for the great comment. I'm so glad it helped.
That's great! Thanks for the feedback and the awesome comment!
THANK YOU! these instructions were perfect to clean the filter and the washer is running again! yay!
Awesome! I'm so glad it helped.
look in the drain hose with a light and found a washer sheet blocking flow of water... removed and problem fixed!. So be sure to look deep with light before moving to the pump replacement. Great video!
Awesome! I'm so glad it helped. Great advice!
