I have a cool technique for percentages of large numbers. I divide numbers into their tens, hundreds, thousands etc. constituents, apply the percentage to each one, them sum the results. So to do 20% of 1485 (composed of 1000, 400, 80 and 5), I do:
    (20% of 1000) + (20% of 400) + (20% of 80) + (20% of 5)
    = 200 + 80 + 16 + 1
    = 297

      +bennemann 20% is the same as 1/5 so just divide 1485 by 5 ( =297) ... or divide by 10 and double your answer. e.g. 1485 /5 = 297 or 1485/10 = 148.5 the x 2 = 297

so you take 3.6 and multiply it by 55% and you get 198 as seen in video hope this helped :)

I'm not joking when I say this just changed my life. I moved from England ( the land of not tipping servers, mainly) to Canada ( tip everyone ) and I've always struggled to figure out the 15 percent tip. I usually didn't bother and guessed because my teachers said I was stupid, and that stuck with me. The simplicity of it blows my mind! I'm staying up all night to study math now...and a big middle finger to all you math teachers who could not explain math in a way that I could understand. Thanks tecmath. :)

He would make a wonderful story teller. I do wonder if people from other countries realise that we Australians find their accent hard to understand at times.Interesting these people have all been helped for free in these videos. I am so grateful as a Homeschool Mother for these very valuable lessons.

When the percentage is a two digit number its always gonna start with a decimal
    45% of 80
    .45×80=36
    ---------------------
When the percentage is only one digit start with your decimal but add a zero followed by your percentage
    4% of 80
    .04×80=3.2
This method gets rid of the subtracting Hopefully this helps and is understandable.

Exactly my point! My math skills are the only thing that has held me back from my goals in life. Math, I think anyway, is the most important in life skills, math is everywhere and everything. I learn it okay, but I lose it just as fast! I remember checking out a book from my school library titled "How to Overcome Math Anxiety", when I was in the 9th grade.Needless to say, didn't help. I've had to rely on my stronger attributes to, just like you say, "stumble through life." Someone told me that I read too much into the equations, maybe that's it, maybe I just can't see the forest for the trees.

    • @HeroZameshi
