    Unfortunately where I live in Australia, the TBS full crossfire setup. Would actually cost me $500 in Australian dollars with a receiver, postage included. Thankfully Frsky has thought of the everyday pilot that is not bankrolled by sponsors . The Frsky full setup with receiver postage free is $139, in Australian Dollars. Certainly the crossfire is top of the line with a full feature list .

    14:22 don't worry buddy, they ARE making a profit. You'd be surprised how cheap these are to produce. When you understand this, then you can think about how TBS is actually super-expensive. TBS is doing it because they can - they have the best gear out there (quality control and features) and they know it, so why wouldn't they?

    • @Timberjagi

      well in the end its with all the products available, but design and support, marketing is also a certain cost, and still everybody makes profit, otherwise it has no use to start a company ;)

    You know what would be great? A breakdown of all of the R9 receiver options and maybe why you might choose one over another.
    I believe the options are R9, R9 Slim+, R9 Slim, R9 Mini, R9MM, and I think a R9 Stab is in the works.

  • @Kikerumbo

    I had the R9M and the Micro Crossfire. Hands down, the Micro Crossfire with the nano receivers (R9M has nano receivers now too). Trying to configure the R9M or update the firmware is like going back in time (solder wires... etc). I prefer "death". Also, for pilots in Europe at least, the R9M with 915MHz is a no go. With the Crossfire, changing the frequency is a matter of seconds, like changing the power, or the RSSI/LQ output channel... etc. LUA scripts and OTA updates are a winner.
    Micro Crossfire goes now up to 250mW and is more than enough for freestyle and +5Km flights (dipole "L" shape for freestyle and vertical Immortal T for medium range). Let's not forget the 150Hz update rate (if you are that sensitive with your latency). Also, if you don't want to carry another battery for external power, Micro Crossfire is the way to go.
    Oh, and updates... Crossfire is a continuously updated system.
    About the mod needed for the QX7 and X10... it's not a must, you can always use the software mod (but you should install the PCB inside. It's not that hard and warranty is unusable at many countries outside USA because shipping, Customs... etc). Anyways, that tells you how petty Frsky is (They make the transmitters, and only their modules are going to work fine). The old X9D works without any mod.
    If you pretend to go +10Km and you cheap out on the modules... well. Good luck.
    By the way, I'm not a TBS fanboy. I really hate them. Oblivion RTF is a bag of old hardware (the only good thing is the frame), Caipirinha 2 explodes if it hits anything and Crossfire is too expensive (any TBS product is too expensive "imo"). Already sold all my equipment. But... I have to give them credit.
    A plus for Frsky is that even they shipped 2.4GHz antennas at first (good job for a 900MHz system), now they seem to know what's the right length and they make custom antennas (even if the orientation of the TX module is always going to suck with that long dipole that can only be straight). TBS doesn't (apart from the TX "tuned" antenna). They do something between 868 and 915 (better to get some Actuna antennas tuned for the right frequency you use). Also, Frsky uses FPort on the mini receivers. That's a plus too.
    Hope this starts a price war. Not only a retailers war like already started or the "starter packs" that TBS is offering now, with 3 nano receivers.

      Nice write up. Like I was saying in the vid. The R9M is mainly for quad guys who want to "fly up the mountain" without a failsafe. Anything more than that and you better have some GPS, RTH, and iNav going. Of course if youre going 10km out you want Crossfire. However the guys flying this module I know "Multi-Gp" and hobby guys. Are not flying 10km. Some not even 2-3km. They just want extended range to not failsafe. For that kind of money its a win win for them. If you're not flying 5-10 miles the R9M is totally fine.

      Now your talking expensive... a complete R9 system with 5 receivers for the price of a single DL receiver.. This stuff fills the price and range gap perfectly. If DL (Mike) had read the writing on the wall, he would have dropped the price of his receivers (especially) to stay competitive and buyers like me would have just kept buying them, but now I moved on, and every plane saves me a fortune, with little sacrifice in range, and no more breeze block hanging off the back.

    You're right in saying that you can't use 900mhz in Europe - that band it's used for mobile telephones - but the R9M also supports 868mhz for use in Europe just like the tbs does. Both modules use the same chip. You just need the right firmware installed.

    In the Frsky model setup create a screen and include GPS sensor, if added, and it will display last known. Also go into special functions and have it log telemetry every second or so. I can't figure out how to get maps to display long and lat. GPS coordinates from the logs on the cf card come right up in maps on my phone and have saved me probably hours of searching.

    No. You don't have to go into the dvr to see GPS for the r9m. It's a full telemetry RX so you can display the GPS data on the tx's screen. I have this setup on my 2 lr rigs and it works fine.
    Also, the r9m is not new. It's been around for a while. Alot of ppl are buying bc of the price drop.
    And betaflight as of 3.4 has GPS rescue. So you don't have to use inav for rth.
    Also 900mhz isn't just for long range. I live in a hilly area. I can't dip behind hills and thick trees with my xm+ or rxsr. With my r9mini I can hover on the ground behind a hilly with almost no rssi drop. Video is still an issue, but that's not an frsky issue.

    I made the mistake of getting the TBS micro crossfire TX module and some nano RX’s, at first it was cool but I had to use the bind button on the nano’s to get them to load firmware and bind. And one of the buttons came apart on the nano RX trying to get it to bind. I had seen some friends have the buttons on their nano’s come apart also. I contacted tbs about the button and asked if they had any reports of the buttons failing on the nano’s. They got rude with me and said I was being to rough with the buttons, if you look at the buttons on the micro it is much better than the ones on the nano. Anyway the problem with the buttons and the attitude from tbs was enough for me.
    I had tried to bind the nano’s with Lua and the button on the TX module and would need to hit the button on the RX to get it to bind, and yes it has the latest firmware on the TX module. So now I believe I got a bad TX module also.
    But the attitude from TBS was the breaking point, I learned a good lesson that just because something cost a lot doesn’t mean it’s better. All the TBS stuff I bought is sitting in a box under my workbench and will stay there as a warning for me in the future !!!

    I don’t want to be party pooper but with great power comes great responsibility, and you may wish to familiarise yourself with your regions regulations. Back in 2013/14, here in the UK, there was a high profile incident with a model flyer. Essentially he had a flyaway incident and his aircraft landed in a very sensitive area. Subsequently the MOD, the Police, and the CAA were involved. He was a member of the BMFA and tried to obtain legal assistance through their insurance. Unfortunately his radio gear didn’t conform to legal specifications so his insurance was nullified. The result was he had the book thrown at him. In the USA, and some other regions, holding a valid Amateur Radio exam pass will allow you to use some of this more exotic equipment but unfortunately here in the UK, and much of Europe, we are not afforded the same privileges, and yes I’m bitter about this as I’ve held a full Amateur Radio licence for nearly 40years and have a Masters in RF technology and yet my model flying tech is limited to the toy shelf.

    Why aren’t the radio manufacturers using this signal in their new radios? I understand they suck more juice, but just use a much higher capacity battery as standard. Is the latency worse with the UHF bands? I wish they would make the change just for a robust link. I don’t fly long range, but would do anything to make the link as robust as possible.

Just thought I would put that out there . Still debating on whether to get the Crossfire for the Nirvana . I personally hate having to update as many times as there are new updates with FrSky .

      Brian Martinez you install an frsky GPS telemetry module on your model and the taranis can be set up to log the coordinates. the files can be used with google earth IIRC to show you a 3D plot of the flight

    • @nigellark
      @nigellark 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the gps coordinates shown on the taranis telemetry screens is the last known position. You still need gps on the model for it to work, but you wouldn't be flying long distance without gps and rth.

    What about all my small Frsky drones with built in receivers will this bind to them and make a difference to rang ?

    • @eskay005
      @eskay005 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It won't. Your regular FrSky receivers are built for 2.4Ghz Band, not 900Mhz. You'll need to switch receivers, but they are quite affordable - on banggood they are in a 12$-40$ range.

How about boosting the video output to go with the transmitter range? Thanks.

    Can either of these mod into a Flysky i6? I was originally going to spend ~$100 and mod it with a WiFi booster (2.4 Ghz, same as transmitter) and a biquad antenna. I'd get a lot more gain and power than either of these setups, but lower frequency has better penetration in general.
    I also have a Turnigy 9x (so I think the R9M would physically plug in), but I don't think they would work software wise.

    Got both systems, the one I do not trust is the TBS, I when to R9 for price, because I have to many airplanes, so far all R9Slims are fantastic, and is a lot more easy to change setting on my x9d with R9, plus TBS is a mess with vector. For the money and range, 100% R9, TBS is way over price for the same performance. and now with the controversy of the antenna from TBS telling hobbyshops, if you sell Frsky, you can no sell TBS, move more people faster to FRsky,.

    so I hate these review videos that haven't done extensive testing on both systems . My friend who has the R9M updated to latest flex firmware and gets random fail safes. Put me right off Frsky. So I'd like to hear what has been the experience been with TBS - how reliable is it

    • @j_kramer
      @j_kramer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flex only works with nightly builds of opentx 2.2.3 which say right on them "do not fly" so he should be very careful. It's only released for testing. There are also many more ways to screw yourself over using the unlocked fw. Please tell your friend to join the R9 FB group if he hasn't already. We'd love to talk about his experiences. Version 180329 has always been stable. There are lots of people flying for R9M for months without issue, but we don't speak up as much as people with failures. If you look at the FB groups for R9 and Xfire, you'll see problems and failsafes are common with both systems, and are very often user related. I only know of two people who have used R9M and Xfire (full version) both extensively, and they've both stated very similar performance at equal power level. I think the main problem with the R9 system is the garbage antennas they include with the modules. Once you put on a TBS Diamond or TrueRC True-Mox, it's beautiful. All this is just to say that I'm all for both systems but, don't be completely put off frsky just from what you saw from your friend.

      No cell systems on 900MHz.
      There are amateur radio systems on 900MHz. though
      You should understand that you need a valid amateur radio license to use any radio systems on the 900 MHz band.
      Don't tempt fate, hams can easily locate rogue RF transmitters, and they have priority on the 33CM band.
