      I am really disappointed that we never got to battle Sonia. It is stated a couple of times that she was Leon’s main rival back in the day. The fact that Leon is one of the strongest trainers in the world indicates that Sonia was probably a really strong trainer too, so I would have LOVED to see more Pokemon she owned, instead of only seeing her with a little Yamper

    Sword and Shield feel like they wanted to be fantastic, but low development time and probably mediocre programming kept them from being the very best they could. Swsh put so much emphasis on spectacle that it's hard to believe they didn't at least try their best.

    • @zjzr08
      @zjzr08 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Concepts does seem great, but the execution seemingly is a mixed bag -- wonder if something a bit basic would've sufficed at the moment, as long as they were executed well (like would a Let's Go overworld with Sword & Shield mechanics suffice?).

    • @Slenderquil
      @Slenderquil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@zjzr08 I don't think that would've been enough. People were wanting innovation out of swsh, and i think the overworld And wild areas were made for that purpose. People were expecting swsh to be the biggest and best looking Pokemon games yet, so other areas like the dex had to suffer for them to fit in these innovations. They bit off too much to chew and didn't get the time to swallow it all.

      @@smashmaster521 I've started playing sonic forces recently and it is surprisingly like swsh. They are both mediocre games that try to do something innovative with the series (making everything bigger and more grand with swsh and an attempt at a much more mature story with forces, even if forces did a bad job), but both can at least be enjoyed as fun to play. Forces also feels a bit rushed, just like swsh.

    You've pretty much summed up my feelings with this. But one flaw that I still can't get over is that regular Pokemon can't use their Gigantamax forms. You HAVE to catch a Gigantamax Pokemon from specific raids. The Corviknight, Coalossal and Toxtricity I had on my team that I had with me for my entire journey just don't get to use Gigantamax, and that really sucks. It's directly the opposite of the series' most hammered down messages: It doesn't matter whether what's objectively the "best" way to battle, the bonds you share with your friends are what are really important. Kinda hard to say that with a straight face when you're basically telling me to trash one of my team members because they aren't allowed to do the special transformation that's exclusive to their species.

      SilverJakler the thing is, many Gigantamax Pokémon are worse then the dynamax ones. They have the same stats, just different effects in the moves and appearances. Your Corviknight is better of normal, same with charizard and many more.

    • @Blaze-nm1uh
      @Blaze-nm1uh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      1ts2EZ I still believe that you should have the option to make your Pokémon able to gigantamax Pokémon you caught during your playthrough. Perhaps we could have gotten an item like the dynamax candies from doing gigantamax raids, needing to complete raids of the specific Pokémon you want to be able to gigantamax. By making it so that you need to do the raid of the Pokémon you want to gigantamax, this allows them to both give us the ability to gigantamax our playthrough Pokémon, while still allowing gamefreak to do events with mons that currently have unavailable gigantamax forms.

    For me, this game is the epitome of "style over substance." All of the positives I've seen made about this video game are mainly ones that revolve around the aesthetics or just general eye candy, namely the Camping and Gigantamaxing. In terms of visuals, they're a great appeal, but when you dive into their gameplay purposes, they're pretty pointless. Definitely cool and charming the first go around, but not something to really come back to; again, just like the game itself. It's good as a first time, but nothing really more than that.

  • @Onion_57
    @Onion_57 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    One complaint i have is how the primary conflict comes so late in these games. Having the climax come RIGHT before your champion battle is far too late, and it kinda feels like it rushes through the rose arc.

    • @Onion_57
      @Onion_57 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PikaCinema in that case, it really feels worse to shove it in at the end, you’re better off not including it at all if you aren’t gonna make it a focus like Gen 7 did.

    • @anothergamer112
      @anothergamer112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @PikaCinema then why not have Sordward and Shielbert appear sooner so theres justification for the good bois to show up and have you and Hop then use them against Eternatus before the league begins instead of the "oh wait, real quick I forgot about this" the story ended up doing with everything.

    • @anothergamer112
      @anothergamer112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @PikaCinema My point is that the justification should move happened sooner for pacing reasons and so you can use the pokemon that's on the box before the game ends. The way the story flip flops back and forth in the third act is comparable to a fanfiction. Two different primary stories are happening and instead of having one play out then the other, they have break up the story beats and order them in a ABABAB format with no consideration for how they would transition between each other. It's like if in Back to the Future Marty Mcfly was trying to get his parents to get together, then suddenly he has to deal with Buford the old west outlaw, then suddenly we're back to seeing Marty set his parents up. You see how that doesn't flow at all? And no, the fact that it's "realistic" for things to happen unexpectedly In real life doesn't justify bad story telling because the writers are in full control.

I played Dragon Quest 11 instead of Sw/Sh, and the difference between it and modern Pokemon is night and day. I personally think Gen 5 was the best JRPG at the time of its release. Where did it go so wrong that a franchise that's only highly popular in one country overtook it so far in quality? And that's not even mentioning Persona 5, which has profits that are dwarfed by both. Pokemon should be so much more, and I think Game Freak would agree. However, the higher ups in decision making have turned Pokémon into a cash cow, and Game Freak has to work incredibly fast to keep up with demand. As long as we keep buying these games Game Freak won't get the time they deserve and we, the fans, won't get the best product we possibly could. Not to mention maybe the higher ups would start making high quality high effort deep spinoffs again, like Colosseum, Ranger, Mystery Dungeon and the earlier Rumbles. The only one we've gotten in recent times is Pokken. Everyone is free to like this game, but I just can't support it. @@jowysw Sure Dragon Quest has kept a lot of its core elements, such as turn based combat, but it's been expanded in so many areas to keep being fun and entertaining to play. The locations, characters, story, monster (and everything else) designs, voice acting, music (11s at least), the amount of weapons, the forge, the amount of dialogue that changes as you go through the game, the free-roam camera, the open world... It keeps everything fans of the genre like about the classic games while improving upon them, adding new stuff and taking away things most people don't like. Heck, even with the turn-based combat, you can let the computer control your team-mates if you don't want to manage multiple party members. And by the end of the post-game my highest level characters were nearly at max level. That's something Pokémon could really do to improve: rather than giving us items to fix the flaws of leveling, why not have the levels of Pokémon be around 90 by the end of the game, and adjusting the levels Pokémon evolve at and the amount of experience it takes to level up to compensate?

It's so obvious that there were great ideas here: The characters are fun, the world's pleasantly designed, and the new pokemon designs are cool...But there's a HUGE lack of polish that I'm normally used to in all of Nintendo's games: Huge FPS drops despite looking like a mobile game, lots of non-animations for things that really should have them etc.

Giving them an extra year will definitely polish up the game to make them the best games possible! What I don't understand is why they flat out refused to add cut Pokemon and moves back into the game with waves of patches. I mean they literally reused Sun and Moon's models so it's just a matter of animating them and creating new effects for moves. I guarantee people wouldn't be so mad if they did that, because yeah almost 1000 Pokemon is definitely a lot to handle and people would probably understand needing to create a base of half and add the others later.
    But not only are they not doing that afaik I believe they also said they are going to limit the dex in all future releases from now on, which is a move I really don't think is smart because we'll just keep getting the same reaction when X Pokemon gets cut and replaced with Y Pokemon.

If I was going to be smart about this, I would do the mons that didn't show up this game and steadily build up the full catalog, then release them all in the next possible game. Or how every single Gigantamax form has a physical attack animation... that they will never use in battle. Or the god forsaken MOUSE CURSOR that literally appears in the credits. It's stuff like that that turns me off. That feeling of seeing them trying to shove a game out so fast that they can't even check Zamazenta's model to make sure that his cape doesn't clip into his body just feels infuriating.

She has less battles with you in the main story than Bede, who, might i remind you, is disqualified from the gym challenge and dragged off to go train with Opal halfway through the story. Marnie gets less than him despite being able to be around more. What makes me say Marnie has no personality is how she feels... basic. Like, how does she feel towards team yell? Oh they're just a fanbase who sometimes gets a little too riled up at times. She doesnt feel annoyed by them constantly watching her, nor does she get defensive of them. She takes the most plain, simple, nonconfrontational road of, "they're good but they make mistakes." And that feeling of "taking the easiest possible route" feels repeated over and over with Marnie. Why does she reject Piers' offer to be Spikemuth's gym leader? Because she cant if she'll be champion, duh! Her card literally says "Though many in Spikemuth see her as a local celebrity, she herself has no interest in pursuing fame. However, she says she does appreciate the support of Team Yell, her personal cheering squad." So... what you're saying is that she doesnt want to be famous but doesnt mind the downside to being famous, that being obnoxious clingy fans? And also, if one of the reasons you'd want to be champion is to breathe life back into your hometown, then why would you say you're not pursuing fame?! Isnt that the reason you're becoming champion? To become famous enough that you can bring in tourists and money to spikemuth and help it get better? Why doesnt even say that you dont want fame, it's clear that you dont seem to care at all about followers and crowds chanting for you. The card doesnt even say whether she likes or dislikes her fans mimicking her accent. She has no interactions with anyone outside of you and team yell, and she never shows any character growth. Shes just there. And even that's incorrect since YOU BARELY EVER SEE HER IN THE GAME!

      @@flarecoils1573 Oh, don't even get me started on that! I felt that both Bede and Marnie should have gotten more battles with you so you could at least get more of their story or personality, but with Marnie especially it feels like she just kinda exists in the story as an unimportant side character. Even when you get to Spikemuth, it just comes across as another roadblock to clear instead of a major area to go to for story purposes. I feel it comes down to the story of SwSh itself, where most of the major plot events just happen out of seemingly nowhere and then end, like the crap with Chairman Rose. Marnie is absolutely no exception to this. My solution would be to make the campaign last longer and have her battle you more or be around more often, or give her a larger part in the post game, instead of her just practicing her smiling (while that moment was cute, it's all we get in terms of character growth from her. Even Bede has a larger part in the post game). If the story was longer, I think Marnie (and some other characters by extension) could have been more fleshed out with their motivations. I don't think Marnie is a bad character overall, as I see some potential in her and it could have been tapped if the story was handled better in some areas, and I'd honestly rather deal with a character that's missed potential and is just kinda there than a character who has a major role in the story and fucks it up (I don't like Chairman Rose, if you couldn't tell already), but I do agree that Marnie could have been handled WAYYY better, mostly with her role in the story and some of her personality.

Let's be real, if just about any other company made pokemon, half the convience changes they made in sword and shield would have been implemented by the time platinum came out. And by the way, they had a dedicated button for poke balls in gen 7.)
    Few other comments:
    If you think dynamax is balanced, I don't know what fangame you're playing, because it ain't in the slightest. you comment on the choice lock, and its worth noting it. still. gets. the. boost. from. whatever. item. its. holding. There's a reason that both megas and z moves required an item lock, because all three need it to be balanced. Just look at mega rayquaza versus either mega mewtwo. One is banned from ubers, the other is barely used in ubers. one needs the item, one can hold anything but a z crystal. pretty obvious correlation. Either way, dynamax definitely does not deserve a +3. +2 is pushing it.
    I don't want to make the "IDK what game you've been playing twice" joke twice, but seriously, how the cinnamon toast f*** is chairman rose "morally fascinating"? He's starting doomsday events in an attempt to stop a problem 1000 years in the future and catching anyone who can prevent mass destruction with their pants down. Speaking of pants, Leon ain't hooking up with cynthia if he doesn't stop wearing short shorts.(No people, Leon does not dress like football players do. I have yet to see any soccer players wear short shorts or a cape. Stop trying to pretend Leon's pitiful attempt at "Fashion" is anything other than a turn off.)
    Jeez, three in a row? Team yell is literally the exact same "Bad guys aren't actually bad" trope as team skull. just the same as how Macro cosmos turning out to be the ones causing problems is the same "seemingly benevolent but kinda mysterious figure is secretly the big bad" they pulled with both lusamine and lysandre.
    The exp candies, while good for competitive, take an already broken leveling system and subject it to the explosion of a dynamaxed electrode.
    You also dodge around the graphics issue, but it is actually quite a big one. If you are cutting a corner as big as the national dex, it makes sense that you would improve in every other area, and we just don't see that in sword and shield. If you upscale the previous games, USUM, 3DS games, they look basically identical to sword and shield, and even arguably better in many areas(and without many of the problems in sword and shield), compared to literally every other console change which improved the graphics considerably, not just upscaling previous graphics, despite a largely reduced workload. and like you say, other franchise advanced their graphics considerably with their moves to the switch. Even when this video released, we had already seen the switch's potential, and sword and shield don't come anywhere near the likes of Breath of the Wild, Smash Ultimate, or Mario Oddessy, which not only look beautiful but blow the graphics of other entries in their franchises out of the water. It's not quite worth +5, but I would definitely have given it +3 or 4.
    Also, the regional evolutions, while definitely a plus, barely count as evolutions for the pokemon which need them. Sirfetch'd and Mr rime are great, yeah, but kantonian farfetch'd is still useless as ever.
    I'm hoping you will update this for the DLC, not just because it fixed some of the issues(whilst introducing new a plethora of new ones, unfortunately), but also because you were a bit too generous.
    Believe me, I wanted to love these games, but you talk about they are still fun, despite all the problems, and issues not directly in the game such as with gamefreak's marketing recent tactics, which have been immoral at best and the sort of thing which would provoke lawsuits for a less fanatical fanbase than pokemon's at worst(Most notably, blatant false advertising. They at one point explictly said they cut the dex because they remade the models(which were future proofed anyways, so this wouldn't have been an issue if they hadn't claimed they remade them), then proceeded to release the game with a handful of models which were even remotely changed, and none which were changed enough to be visible. You think they are still fun, but all the problems(particularly the broken levelling system, which make the game far too easy) have just rendered them nearly unplayable. It just feels like for ever step forward, there's either two steps back, or just one bigger step back.
    Really, my thoughts on this game can be summed up by a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto, a quote which whoever made the decisions which caused all these problems should have heeded: "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is bad forever." Sorry for the wall of text.

The reason why people are upset with Gen 8’s graphics are that we now finally got a mainline Pokémon game on a home console as powerful as the switch, and it still looks and plays like 3ds game. This honestly baffles me because the Coliseum games have been looking like actual console games for almost 2 decades. As for the National Dex, most of us who aren’t just crying that their favorite mon didn’t make it in are upset that GameFreak said that they had reasons to cut it that were obviously false. They said they were re modeling all the Pokémon: the models are reused. They said they’re gonna be more expressive with animations: most of the animations used for battling are extremely dated and of low quality. Emerald you can get away with a team of six comfortably, Platinum I HAD to stick with a team of six specialized Pokémon. Pokémon B&W taught me how to plan my team in advance, X allowed me to pick literally anything and have fun, and Moon again had me at a specialized team although I did have to backtrack to catch a Ribombee.

I swear every time I see a kingdra in any game that isn’t kalos ORAS or Moon I think “well fuck, how am I gonna get out of THIS?”. Cause in Emerald the only dragon type you get without trade till postgame is flygon and Rayquaza. Yeah Walreign’s fantastic but Juan’s has double team and Drake is scary. Then Clair the only dragon type you could POSSIBLY obtain by that point is a dratini in the gamecorner with voltorb flip (you can’t even buy tokens en mass) and if you want a real good ice type you’ll go for mamoswine by finding a hidden heart scale or trading a razor claw so Sneasal can evolve. My only real gripes personally have been Y Comm especially with college wifi and linking to friends, raid battle NPCs (Screw Magikarp, Wobbufett, and Solrock), and Gigantamaxing. Specifically that it was made to where you need to hunt down that specific version of a mon in a raid battle over raising it's evolution line in order to get it. And if that doesn't work, it could very well have a trigger to let the line be capable of GMax over DMax. For example, what if in its final stage of evolution, you make curry with Gigantamix and if you get a 4 or higher with that Mon in the lead, it makes a text box appear saying you can GMax it now. Would make having to farm dens less annoying given they are locked to extremely rare spawns in rare dens

    Dynamax was a fun idea, but ultimately felt like "mega evolution but less" because they were somehow simultaneously worse and more powerful than megas. Dynamax and Gigantimax are only available for 3 turns, but otherwise offer no real downside. However a mega salamance is way scarier and harder to beat in the right hands. Z moves felt fine as well, and they made it a choice of "Use a z move or mega stone or something else." Allowing for mind games in the right situations. Dynamax feels like it wanted to be climactic but its surprisingly easy to endure in single player, and in competitive play they can and can't sweep a team somehow, depending on the format and team. They feel like a threat and a joke, making it just a big joke over all. The biggest issue is the hand holding, or at least how the game treats you like you can't do anything. The scene where leon defeats a dynamax purrzerker off screen is basically how the game treats everything, "Don't worry just continue." But I WANT to be involved!I WANT to help! I WANT TO HAVE FUN! The game has events happen off screen, dangerous events that you are told happened and then told to just ignore it. Compare the infamous scene where leon beats a dynamax purrzerker off screen and tells you to continue versus the lake valor explosion in gen 4. You get there a moment too late, but you still fight and defeat Saturn. Then you rush up to snow point, once again just being too late. You only continue with the last gym after team galactic is beaten. You aren't told to continue with your journey, cynthia doesn't say she can handle it. Rowan doesn't tell you to not go, he tells you to be careful. He knows and expects you to go and trusts you to handle yourself. You are treated as the competent trainer that you are. If dppt were more like swish then Rowan would tell you to not go to the lake, you would go with Barry to smowpoint and he would rush ahead, Cynthia would deal with most of the events at veilstone and she would free the lake guardians with you, after you had beaten Saturn... Its way less climactic and you are treated like a kid. Yeah its somewhat more realistic in the sense that a newbie wouldn't be as good but realism is not what they should be aiming for. I liked being an exceptionally good trainer. I liked others trusting me to handle myself and proving them right with their trust. I liked doing thing in the plot.

    I feel like the competitive tweaks didn't deserve a +5, it's what you'd expect from every new mainline game.
    Personally, I feel I liked the main story fine enough, albeit very by-the-numbers, music is amazing, the new mons are top-quality, even more so than Gen 7 in my eyes. But man, lack of content for offline players, the horrible gimmick that is Dynamax that only works in story and is broken in an actual fair competitive match... Oh and did I mention those competitive matches have a 20-minute timer now if you do singles? Oy oy oy....
    Not to mention the capped damage and horrible AI in raid battles, the terrible weather gimmicks constant in the wild area that clog up the speed in both performance and in-battle. The concept of the gym challenge being a full-on sport event is amazing, but didn't amount to a whole lot in the end other than rematching a couple gym leaders in the tournament... And this is all not having even mentioned the dex cut, which I honestly feel the same as Logan on. Sucks, but I'm not gonna go apeshit about it.
    These games are rough. I'd argue not worth the pricetag. I'd recommend to wait for a drop in price but I doubt they're willing to do that anytime soon. 40 euros would be fair enough, but not 60.

    Here's the thing with pokemon swsh. They're fun and I had a lot of fun but every pokemon game is fun, i have not played one that wasn't. So for me, atleast, having it be fun is low.
    Some of my problems:
    1. I dislike Hop. Yes he has good character growth but man is he annoying. And it doesn't help that he's stupid easy.
    2. Max Raid Battle NPC are annoying as hell. If you play a 4-5 star max raid battle with npcs, you aren't going to win because one will use cosmic power, another helping hand, and the other will die 4 times because they brought a fire type to a ground water type raid battle.
    3. The game is too easy. If you have a pokemon that's supereffective, then dynamax it you guaranteed a win. Ik it's been like that for almost every pokemon game but it feels more apparent here.
    4. Post Game isn't good. It feels like a boring side quest rather than something big. Plus why are the box legendaries in post game and not main game, that's dumb. Eternatus should've been post game.

    This is something that I did when the final tally was put up. I decided to do some math to get a general percentage for Logan's thoughts on this game, and a 37:21 ratio come to a 63% for positive, and 37% for negative. Now on the surface 37 to 21 sounds like a lot, but it actually isn't. If I remember correctly, USUM had a even closer ratio of 22:21. Which in percentage is a 51% positive and a 49% negative. The Let's Go games were an even 50% on both sides. If we are going by how reviews work, that means that Logan considers this game to be barely passable and the other two(USUM and Let's Go) failures.
    If you are saying that this video is full of bias, then look back at what I calculated. These numbers that I calculated are showing that Logan is actually being tougher than most critics are. Most critics are giving this game 8's and 9's and the lowest score by critics is higher than what Logan is giving with it being a 7. So the question is, is Logan being bias? Well, if he was, the gap in points would be much bigger, like the ratio would probably be more like a 54:8.
    I bet someone is going to try and say that what I am saying is wrong and that I need to "wake up" and see the truth. Well, math like that cannot lie, it just shows the answers to the problems. I am not siding with Logan, I am just showing the calculation that I got. So, if you have responses, step right up. Hit me with your best shot!

    @gamekrazd626 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This game...It was a rollercoaster for me. Keep in mind, this comes from the heart of someone who loves the games as a concept, and never got to experience the supposed best games of the series. I apologize for the text wall, so I'll summarize: I loved it in concept, I hated what came out during the leadup, I can't support this game myself but I see why others would. I just want the game I know can exist on this hardware now.
    When I first heard of it, I was in love instantly, since it was going to be the most ambitious game yet, taking that Switch hardware and pushing its limits, and the pokemon team themselves pushing their own limits with a new generation, a new region, new ideas...and right off the bat, I knew I would love the Fire Starter for once (as someone who was always on the Grass team)
    Then the Dexit news came out, and I was distraught at the concept of losing some of the ones who I loved so much. Of course, the leaks confirmed that more than half of my favorites were shorn away, but at the time I didn't know that, and I was shaken at the idea. Not helping was the slow trickle of other losses, like the straight removal of Mega Evolution. Every day was more bad news, and my fears only grew.
    The Games leaked, and all my worst fears were getting validated, a full scan of the 400 mon roster, 320 mons were returning in some form, 40% of all, and indeed, only about 40% of my own picks made it in. It wrenched my gut enough to solidify my choice not to get the game; I wouldn't support this direction before, but the loss felt too personal to reconsider. Tack onto that the various technological and graphical issues that were evident in the game (time stopping ladders still gets me,) and the more on-rails story progression of "just do the league" for most of the game, I was content to sit back and watch this game go up in flames on release...
    ...Then they released officially, and, surprisingly, there was still something good about it. Designs were still wonderful, the region as a concept felt very alive, ignoring the obvious visual faults, and most of the newcomers had very clear identities of their own, which I do greatly respect. I still can't see myself supporting or reccomending this game to anyone but diehard fans, especially in the state of its release and with the executive decision to straight can the idea of "Gotta Catch Em All," but i'm not so blind as to ignore why people can and do still like it themselves. I just can't do so in good faith.
    Taking a line from an old review I saw a long time ago for Skyrim of all things; "This is not a bad game...yet. It's hard to ruin a franchise with just one entry, but if things keep going this way, it can only go downhill." Enjoy Sword and Shield if you can, I will just stand aside and wait for the product it should have been. Whether that's a Second release edition or whatever the next entry/remake in the series is, I only hope it takes the lessons from this game, and runs with it somewhere it deserves to be.

I don't care how psychotically good Zacian is compared to her more Defensive-based younger brother. I'm not taking another player's dog for keeps unless they're wiping their save to start over anyway and don't mind or care.

    Honestly my biggest, relatively minor nitpick is the model sizes. I absolutely cannot stand a console title not giving accurate sizes to the Pokémon models, like
    I can understand why the models for Pokémon were shrunk in the 3DS games, the screen was small and wouldn’t have been able to fit or even barely _run_ most of these models, but this is the _Switch_ we’re talking about! Gimme my accurately sized Tyranitar!
    Honestly the biggest offender is Eternatus. You see it in a cutscene as this gigantic, intimidating, rotten dragon corpse of a Pokémon thats as long as a goddamned school bus, and five seconds later you’re fighting six foot lizard bones like come _on_

    In my opinion Pokemon Sword and Shield can be summed up in a few sentences; It's a rushed game, but, it's a good rushed game. It's rough around the edges, yes, but it still is a shining jewl despite it's obvious flaws... Back durning 5 gen I was thinking about how some Pokemon were only available after the post game, I then thought ' with Pokemon being so popular, there may come a time where the Pokemon devs won't be able to put every Pokemon in the same game... that's gonna happen eventually'...I was unfortunately right... I still think Sword and Shield are amazing games... But like the weapons the games were named after, thay still needed more time in the forge, despite their already good quality...
    Contraversial opinion: Marnie, out of all the rivals in Sword and Shield, in my opinion... Is the least develope. She still cool, but I feel like she needed more time to shine.

      I really feel like he did great too. After playing through Shield myself (expect for battle tower, I want to shake up my team for that) I think that we had some of the best rivals in a long time. Having them all come full circle and seeing how the world impacted them and your actions did and the actions with each other. It was really nice, to be fully honest. I would've loved to see more of Marnie and have a bit more growth on the Bede level, but it doesn't bug me much at all as she was a great rival and had the most busted support cheering in the game. As for the national dex...meh? I know the feeling of losing your friends along the games and being scared of seeing them vanish for good, but I don't discount Gamefreak to just let you never bring them back. Maybe this game isn't where they'll show up, but they'll come back in another, and they seem to want to be sure to bring them with, no matter how far back you got them. I really hope they do more with the series in the future, but now I just want them to be able to work on the game for longer than they were allowed on this one.

      Marnie is a good rival...just not on the level of Hop or Bed, who had full on in-depth character arch. I did like all the stuff they did with Marnie, but I feel like there was some miss potential. For crying out loud Piers had more time for characterization, Marnie just needed more time to shine. Out of all the rivals, I guess you could say, Marnie is the most Pokemon rival out of the rivals in Sword and Shield.

    My biggest issue with the new Pokemon games is that they are just stagnant and have frankly been that way since Gen 6. It's not that they're bad, it's Pokemon for Christ's sake making a "bad" mainline Pokemon game is next to impossible, it's just that its competition is getting much better and more appealing. Why should I fork over $60 and an additional $30 if I wanted to play the DLC just to experience practically the same thing that I have been for the past decade when I could instead buy something like FE: 3 Houses, FF7R, Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, DQ11, Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Bug Fables, ect. And that's what I fear most with this series. Pokemon is so big nowadays that they don't need to shoot for the moon to realistically make a big profit and TPC seems content with just making a "good" game when in the past they would've gone for fantastic. Maybe they'll prove me wrong this year for their 25th anniversary or for Gen 9 but right now I'm going to be looking at their next mainline projects with much scrutiny.
