Constructing an ecosan toilet -- A film from UNICEF

  • Ecological Sanitation is an important new approach to sanitation, which is truly sustainable. It uses almost no water in its operation, and human waste products are used as fertilizer. So three major objectives are achieved:
-- saving on water, a critically scarce resource
-- non-pollution of the environment by human waste, a major cause of disease and loss of human life
-- 'closing the nutrient cycle' : the nutrients (primarily Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and carbon matter) in our excreta goes back into the soil for re-use by plants. Instead of a one-way process where chemicals are mined and used for each crop produced, the same chemicals are returned to the soil for reuse.
This movie was created by UNICEF

@Organikmechanic there's also something called the lovable loo. It's the same concept but everything goes into a bucket and is put into a composting area. That's awesome you have your own dry toilet system. I eventually want to try this type of composting but I live in an apartment and my family thinks I'm insane for wanting to do this. lol

  • @anupdev5845

This does not work well in practice because the smell coming from the excreta hole is awful. Using separate holes for urine and excreta is also cumbersome and may not be very practical for elders with bladder control issues. The twin leach pit toilet system is much more effective as it works like traditional toilets and does not emanate smells. Each pit is used alternatively while the other pit is given time to turn the sludge into compost. Water and urine is automated drained into the soil. This kind of toilet is not perfect either but works better in practice.

It's a simple and very effective design from the sanitation as well as from the environmental protection points of view, if one is willing to abandon Western-style sanitation models in favour of more sensible ones like the Ecosan-type toilet system shown above.

No it realy works. If you want to be doubly sure just add a 3" black plastic or metal pipe to the collection chamber. Run it out of the chamber wall high as possible outside of the building on the Sunny Side of the building. Be sure to put a fly screen on the top with a rain guard to keep water from coming down the vent pipe and it will automatically heat up from the Sun and draw Vapors out of the chamber.

In the USA and many Countries they have simular composting toilets. They only have one hole but have a collector container for the urine that diverts it away. And the seat is elevated as in most western toilets. So either sort of design works the same way. It's just that they cater to the customs in the area where they're used.

  • @Organikmechanic
    @Organikmechanic 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Brilliant concept. We should be using this system in the West instead of wasting a valuable resource like water. We have made our own dry toilet system, which has been in use for a year now - it comprises a compost bin and cabin with two receptacles - the urine, diluted, goes straight on the garden. The material used is recycled pallet wood and the films explaining how to make it are on my channel. Thanks for posting this and all the Best from Normandie! Organikmechanic aka Andy

No one is going to adhere to so many instructions while defecating, especially in India.
Water, urine as well as fecal matter in most of the cases will fall in the same pit. The design does not seem at all feasible for woman, people having difficulty moving while in a seated or squatting position. Even after some days, the smell while opening the lid would prevent almost all people to avoid it.

Actually, a well used and maintained Ecosan toilet is odour-free and pest free. It is also quite easy to use, once you get used to it. Any lifestyle change is a bit difficult to accept at first. However, the benefits far outweigh the difficulty in usage. An Ecosan toilet saves 10-15 l of fresh water with every use. It also delivers 2 types of very potent fertilizers for the soil which is very valuable for farmers/gardeners. I'm sure if you get the opportunity to try one, you may change your mind :)

Here is an idea, Design a large joe cell filled half full with aluminum gallium alloy. The alloy will produce hydrogen when water comes into contact with it. Urine is mostly water so then fill the joe cell the rest of the way with urine then turn on electrical frequency to operate the joe cell which will then start producing HHO that can then charge solid state sponge hydrogen power cells. The joe cell during processing of the urine will produce a resonance bubble that Tesla induction coils can absorb and turn into electrical energy to charge organic carbon power cell banks. The fecal matter can then be cycled with a heater being powered by the HHO produced to sterilize and process the fecal matter into sterilized top soil to grow crops with. The hydrogen fuel cells then can be used to operate cars and motorcycles farming equipment electrical power generators and so on. The left over residue within the joe cell from processing urine could be collected and crystallized and turned into plant food after allowing joe cell to cool and harden after so many gallons of urine have been processed. What do you think about this idea? 😊

Better solution would be to feed the night soil to the earthworm.

Or, you could save lots of money and concrete, and use Joe Jenkins' far superior, much simpler Humanure System. His system has flourished in developing countries where Unicef's expensive toilets have failed disastrously.

solution: build a toilet that burns poo. A good fresnal lens pointed at poo will burn to ashes. Have a separate place where urin goes into ground. simple.

Must come up with bamboo toilet tissue dispenser. No stagnant water for bum hole. Bumboosa toilet tissue. From what I hear, they plant a tree for every box you buy.

You shouldn't use ashes it's too dry and won't help the human remains decompose
