How To Grow A Kiwi Tree Or Vine From Seed, Day 53

  • Here's an update on my Kiwi grown from seed series!
    2 weeks ago I transplanted some of the Kiwis into cups and since they seem to be doing great, I decided it was time to transplant the rest - and show you how they've progressed!
    I will try to list the biggest factors here so you can get off to a good start!
    1) If sprouting from a store bought kiwi, be sure to use an organic kiwi fruit. The ones that are not organic tend to not reproduce very well and the seedlings may not perform well.
    2) Kiwi seedlings need a lot of light when they first emerge. They are use to tropical and/or hotter climates so if you are growing them under a grow light, be sure they are close to it (within a foot at most) and get plenty of it - I had the lights on for 18 hours per day until they were well established.
    3) Kiwis need a ton of water, but they need it to drain well too! Be sure the soil stays moist but it drains easily - which leads me to the final critical factor...
    4) Most potting soils will work but BE SURE that it has a good mix of peat moss (retains moisture) and perlite (helps with drainage).
    I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

    sorry I know this is an old video, but could you make a vid on how you fertilize your seedlings and more mature plants?
    The instruction on the bags is confusing so I wasn't sure what am supposed to do when I repot the seedlings, and later when the plant is more mature ... Thanks so much! Always great to learn :)

      Thoai Anh Dinh I mixed a half dose of liquid fertilizer to start them off - fish fertilizer. Once’s they were 6” tall I crushed some bone and blood meal and mixed it into the top 1” of the soil. Once they outgrew the pots, I planted them outside.

      Albert Cutajar I put them right into the light and kept the soil moist (not water logged) until they were about 2 inches tall. Then I spaced out the watering a little more but still didn't let the soil completely dry out ever.

    Hey i grew a few 5 meter plants (2,5 years old) through this way. But when can i expect the first flowers? And first fruit?

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tuva Hey, thanks for tuning in. Typically, it takes about 4-7 years so you half way there-ish. Be patient because you're well on your way. Keep in kind that you'll need at least 1 male and 1 female plant to produce fruit, which you won't know for sure until the flowers come.

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      KK Production You cannot when growing from seed... you have to wait until it flowers and that can take 4-7 years. Only grafted varieties purchased are known whether they are male and female.

      Maliki - it could be several factos, but I will try to list the biggest factors here so you can give it another go.

      4) Most potting soils will work but BE SURE that it has a good mix of peat moss (retains moisture) and perlite (helps with drainage).
      I hope this helps! Keep trying because you will succeed! It took me several years t get an avocado seed to sprout and now I can get them to sprout and grow every time!
