New subscriber from Costa Rica here. Nice video, I never saw a red kiwi. Any update? After 3 years are they finally flowering ? I'm interested in checking how many male/female plants you get. Please make a video when you get flowers!
I know I already commented this in a different video but I am genuinely addicted to watching your content, I don't have anywhere I can really grow anything so experiencing it through you is really nice, fascinating to see so many new fruits I never knew existed and how they grow, keep it up man!
I tried these a while ago and thought they were really nice. It will be great when they become available regularly. They will be neat sliced on top of the Christmas pavlova (looking like a pohutukawa).
I live in Siberia and here we have a special pine that contains delicious nuts in its cones. Birds and squirrels store them for the winter. I planted one from seed and it has been growing at home for 3 years now. The only downside is that even though this tree is extremely shade-tolerant and frost-tolerant, it is also a very slow grower. It takes around 20 years to start fruiting.
Hey there Kalem! I wanted to ask you something about the coconuts, Ive had a lot of successful sprouts out of roughly 20-30 attempts, Few of which died later on but my 2nd attempt sprout has actually done quite well and is getting very large, Though since it doesnt have a husk, It doesnt have much supporting it, Most of the roots are going out in one direction so its not being supported from the side its leaning from. Im worried a wind gust may snap it from the roots. Ive tried the wet napkins around the roots, Maybe next time should i put a lot more? I got one little root but it stopped. Also, can you make an update video on your coconut tree if you still have it?
Interesting that this video popped up in my notifications. I have a store-bought kiwi on my cabinet right now that I’m about to try to grow plants from. Thanks for the advice!
I planted Gold Kiwi seeds about 4 years ago and decided to grow 4 of them to find a female amongst them - it can be a 5 to 6y exercise to flowering - ive tasted the red but prefferiig to grow Kens Red Kiwiberry which is fully red inside.
I've just been watching some of your videos, I'm looking forward to seeing how these kiwifruit grow! I've just started my own gardening channel, as I'm in Christchurch and I can't grow any of the tropicals you can!
I've grown winter hardy Kiwi but I've not grown the Red Kiwi that you were showing! I live in a Northern climate in the U.S. and the winter Hardy Kiwi aren't as tasty as the large ones. "JENNY" is a fairly new Variety that can grow in Zone 6 to Zone 10. and it produces decent size tasty Kiwis! I'm psyched to give them a try. I would so love to get some seeds from a Red Kiwi! Thanks for the Great Video "TheKiwiGrower"!
katanye, got them from a fruit shop in Auckland. They’re only around for very limited time. Unfortunately when I moved to the city I had to leave my plants with my Parents and they ended up dying. I’m keen to have another go at some stage though, however realistically they won’t mature in our climate in NZ
Well I think they should mature enough in kaitaia area. there's Mountain coconuts in Whangarei and plenty of mangos aswell. I would like to have a go with the coconut, have tried it before (using the bucket of warm water) but no success. You should try coffee. They grow them commercially at doubtless bay
I started growing these from store bought Kiwis and Im not sure if I cna keep them in the pot or If I should plat in ground. can these Kiwis deal with Winter/snow and freezing temps?
@@TheKiwiGrower Oh, right - makes sense! I love the berry flavour in these things - reminds me a bit of rhubarb because it's still got that kiwifruit tang to it :)
Are any of the kiwi vines that you started from seeds in your old video still alive? I would love to see an update on those and how you cared for them. I don't have a good climate for them, but have a few 2-year-old vines in pots that I bring outdoors for the summer, which I started after watching your video. Thank you for all of your great content!
Hey, unfortunatly I no longer have them, as I left them behind when I moved up to the city. Hopefully I can get these ones to grow into vines relativly quickly! How big are the 2 year old ones you've grown?
How did the seeds turn out. I’m very curious because I like growing all different types of seeds.I live here in South Carolina,Can these Kiwis be bought in the US?
I've heard kiwi fruit plants take up a LOT of space --which you probably have. But can't you find nursery plants (clones) of kiwi pretty easily around there? Or maybe the red kiwi is heavily protected on not in the commercial nurseries yet. We get golden kiwis in our grocery stores now and they are fantastic. Also, that's a great looking mandarin the background!
Do you know how to cut through the regulatory stuff to own kiwi fruit plants here in NZ? I didn’t know one had to have a registered orchard or approval to grow kiwi.
Love this video.5 days ago i try to grow kiwi fruit. Hope it works and have the same result in few weeks. I live in ouest africa never see the tree in this part of my continent. Finger cross. ❤❤❤❤❤
Turners and Growers gave the name Kiwifruit when they started exporting into the US market many years ago. In those days Chinese gooseberries wouldn't have gone down to will in the US market. Kiwifruit was meant to be the name for NZ Chinese gooseberries but the rest of the world started using the name and NZ lost its marketing advantage. Today all new varieties have Plant Variety Rites which are kept for 23 years and are recognized world wide except for China. Soon there will be more NZ Sungold grown in China than here in NZ!!
@@motboy100 🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝 Back in the 60's a woman came up to me with a tray promoting Chinese Gooseberries. Decades ago. And the Kalahari horned melon has since been dubbed a "Kiwano"! lol

You didn't eat the skin! The skin of the kiwi fruit is what makes the flavour. If you haven't bitten into a kiwi fruit like an apple, skin and all, you're missing out! (Yes even the hairy varieties!) I was never much of a fan of the fruit until I found out you can eat the skin and it completely changed it for me, now I love them. Everyone I mention it to has always been very reluctant to try eating the skin, convinced it must taste awful, but those who tried it love it and now eat them that way all the time. I definitely recommend giving it a go.

Can I get sappling of red kiwi?
In the mid-60's, when i was a kid, they were first marketed in Australia as "Chinese Gooseberries". Then suddenly you Kiwis did the clever marketing strategy of renaming them "Kiwifruit". And they are forever after called that all over the world, now, but I don't know about in China, where they actually first came from. "Kiwifruit" wasn't, I don't think, a trademarked term, but apparently shrewd Kiwis learnt from that success and copyrighted "Kiwano©" which, of course, is from the Kalahari region of Africa.
zuditaka, so interesting! Cheeky us Kiwis ;)
The reason they changed it because china did not have a great reputation back then
