Its a shame since I can't see anything about the game that should keep it in Japan. But people have made repros of it where that translated the language to english. I have a copy myself. And I had a ton of fun. Still haven't played the sequal yet though.
Actually, the GC-game is the fourth game in the series! There is the V2 game on the N64, a GBA-game with 2D Smash-like battles and even a fifth game on the DS!
V2 has English worked on maybe check “custom robo videos” YT channel if y’all ever wanted to see. I think it might be a little more funny compared to the first one too lol
This needs to be the top comment for this video. It might not be a bad idea to update the video description. Or maybe make an updated video of this game with the patch.
I've recently started with learning Kanji, which are the Chinese characters that are used in Japan, and have played some simple Japanese games on the Sega Saturn and PC Engine along with a dictionary. These game always seemed appealing to me and perhaps now I can give it a go, even though it seems very text heavy to try and translate for myself.
I love this style of graphics, especially what it does for the game play. I could see myself totally hooked on this. I do not really have an opinion why they would not release this worldwide since its seems like an addicting RPG game in the Nintendo style.... as a child I pretty much picked up all things Nintendo 64 that I can find at Toysrus, for the most part there are not too many disappointing titles in my collection, except Carmageddon and Battlezone. A sad day for me was the last days Toysrus had Nintendo 64 games on shelves.... the last game I bought at toysrus was Rush 2049, the first game was Starfox 64 which I still play today.... good times
I apologize. When I said disappointing, more like carmageddon could of really had something interesting and I'm pretty sure carmageddon could of benefited from the later consoles, as for battlezone, I really enjoyed it since one of the very first games I've ever picked up was MechWarrior, so the whole concept, tutorials, just how fast you can move, shoot, and jump...I totally get the MechWarrior comparison. The disappointment was I picked up a copy just this past year in November, so in every way the whole experience I had with Battletanx I couldn't duplicate with Battlezone, further I didn't know how to really make sense pf the game, except I really liked the MechWarrior elements, so in that perspective I should give this game another chance, plus I was playing on the projector set up... so the movie room, so maybe the net time I play ill try a smaller TV... yes n64 had some aweful games but I was very selective with my collection, I chose games that proved something, even if they were a little ambitious...I had an appreciation for the majority of games in my collection. I look up some youtube videos on Battlezone, thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it, most of my friends do not do games like I do.
I heard that Smash Bros almost didn't get a western release, as it was assumed the west wouldn't be interested in a mascot fighting game. I don't know if that's true or not. We (Brits) also didn't get any Front Mission games other than Front Mission 3. I can only speculate as to why, but perhaps it's market research assuming that the west doesn't really go for robot/mech games? I heard of Custom Robo from time to time. Judging from the speed of the gameplay, does it run at 60fps on actual N64 hardware? Also, the textures (especially the arena) don't have the muddy look of other N64 games.
Man it's a shame. I would have really loved this kind of game with it's fast paced action. I wonder if this series was one of the inspirations for Hideo Kojimas Zone of the Enders.
I have both Custom Robos for the N64. I play them on a modded N64 that can play both US and Japanese carts. I don't understand too much Japanese, but this game is an absolute gem!
I'm from Japan, got this on my 8th Christmas. Let me touch on the stories and backgrounds, it is a all-boys-love atmosphere lot like 90s MANGA and ANIME. One day you get a specialized item or power, and going towards villans with your friends, now one of your fellow rivals. For me, I played more then Mario64, challenged myself to go through the game with first set of items(called parts in the game) given. In 2020, the producer/designer of Customrobo launched Synaptic Drive, a almost-the-same game on switch and steam, which have failed not exceeding the expectations of fans, due to lack of polish where Shigeru Miyamoto should have given in early days. Customrobo is Still a masterpeace, along with Golden Eye , gathering your friends stuck in front of your TV.
I seem to remember having played this on the DS. Story seemed a bit thin, but customising and battling the robots more than made up for it. Might have to pick up the N64 version as well.
1999 is the end year for 64 pretty much, they had just localized majoras mask, thats a big reason games dont get released here, the dreamcast was already out
The new game's coming to 3DS. Since it's based off of a japanese toy franchise also coming westward, basically a Japanese Bionicle that predates Bionicle, I'd like to see a path be made for it allowing for Amiibos or it. Just imagine buying a special NFC piece with a special skeleton that puts your custom robo in the game exactly how you made it in real life. With compatibility to the old pieces. Never p[layed with them, but this sounds cool.
I haven't felt the need to check this out since it doesn't look it has much to offer that I can't get in Custom Robo on the Gamecube since I can't understand the story anyway. I think Nintendo just didn't bother localizing games not already established in the west in 1999-2001 on the N64 as they also passed on Sin & Punishment and Animal Crossing(until they were ported/emulated for GC/Wii).
I love Custom Robo 1 and 2. I played a good part of the story in 1 even with my less than wonderful Japanese. I would put at least one of the custom robo games on my personal top 10 N64 game list.
There was an actual Custom Robo game that came over here for the DS and these games look very similar. I loved that game. I think there's also one for Gamecube and I am not sure if that came out here but I've always wanted to try them out. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, it's too bad it doesn't have an English translation patch but maybe some day eh? :)
What we got on the GameCube was Custom Robo Battle Revolution, but instead titled as just Custom Robo. We also did get like one more on the DS, and that was about it for us Americans. Even everywhere else, some countries have it so much better than us in games and an even bigger collection. Like when it comes to Sin and Punishment N64, and Star Successor (Wii) the one on the N64 was entirely in English with Japanese subtitles. While we get, basically the second game, but we can download Japanese games and also those games as well. Makes it worth while in the process.
fuck i love the n64 custom robo games. part of the fun was just making up my own story, though being familiar with the english titles definitely helped a lot as the games dont change much between titles
I heard a lot of Custom Robo. I really loved Custom Robo for the DS. It was beautifully fun and enjoyable. I honestly would love to play the N64 and GBA versions translated. Hope Nintendo releases them on the eshop.
I have this game. It is really great. The level design, gameplay, music. All great. It's like a cross between Pokemon, and Super smash bros. I recommend anyone to buy this.
As do I, I just can't believe I have use that puny Ray Legend against Rahu in the finals. I figured out today to properly equip it with good weapon strategies, and not the Original Ray Mk. 1, or 4. Probably the best game we got from Nintendo of Japan.
Damn, color me impressed with these graphics. For the 64 era, this game has some pretty clear and crisp graphics and resolution...one of the better graphical representations I've seen on the 64.
Good video! I recently subscribed to you and I've been watching a lot of your videos. You should do a review for animal crossing 64. I haven't found any high quality ones on youtube.
It's hard to say why this game didn't make it out side Japan. it looked fun. Although we did get the Gamecube and DS games. I played it on Gamecube and liked it. I wish Nintendo would release a new one for Wii U or 3DS.
They didn’t on switch, Japan plays V2 comp and allows friendlies with other regions. I still play v2 with people in Japan today. If you bought regular nso expansion you can play Japanese nso for free
I myself just received my copy of Custom Robo from Japan today! I have wasted (spent) most of my day playing it. I've played a ROM of it before, and beaten it, but it just wasn't the same. You can't truly experience Custom Robo without owning it in a physical form. It is simply amazing.
not yet.. but I'm planning to.. Must say my european N64 was collecting dust (well not dust since im a game collector but you get the idea) before I ran into your channel. I bought a converter and man there's a whole different (cheaper) world out there ;)
I always wondered why these Japan-only releases always seem to feature English text, even if it's not predominantly English text. Why is it not all in Japanese if it's not going to be released outside of Japan?
Incomplete language. But I don't know if that is really the reason, Japanese has a lot of Chinese characters in it though. English is also apparently somewhat common there too.
digitalblasphemy1100 In Japan English is they're second language. It's a guess, but i think they have a bit of english in games for the younger generation. It helps, when i was younger, being able to play games in japanese helped me pick up on the language.
U.S. defeated Japan in WWII and wrote their new constitution and helped rebuild their cities and pretty much the military has occupied Japan ever since. This influenced their culture and English is taught in Japanese schools (though not very well).
Thanks, I was buying a reproduction cart of this game and it said it required one. And thank you for your review on wonder project j2 I recently picked it up and loved it thanks.
acully it did get a English port but only on the game cube with worst visuals simily the same game. its can be downloaded on the pc using a rom and a gamecube emulator no patch need if you go to the right site. if you got any question about the site I used just ask below this comment.and I will answer as soon as possable. also its not a dercectly the same game just that the game is the same when it comes to game play
Did not know Custom Robo started on the N64. I was introduced to it when it came out for GC.
Its a shame since I can't see anything about the game that should keep it in Japan. But people have made repros of it where that translated the language to english. I have a copy myself. And I had a ton of fun. Still haven't played the sequal yet though.

It kinda reminds me of a cross between Power Stone and Virtual On!
There's an english patch out for this now! I've been playing it recently.
Wow I’ll need to get that!

This needs to be the top comment for this video. It might not be a bad idea to update the video description. Or maybe make an updated video of this game with the patch.
TheTraveller777 Was just about to bring that up. Lol
Me to but I flashed it to a card

These game always seemed appealing to me and perhaps now I can give it a go, even though it seems very text heavy to try and translate for myself.
LOVE these games! Highly recommend all three of the Japanese exclusives even without knowing Japanese. And this one now has a fan translation, too!
Still looking for the first two titles on 64, but I LOVE the US release on the Gamecube!
I love this style of graphics, especially what it does for the game play. I could see myself totally hooked on this. This looks amazing! Looks like there's been an English patch released in 2017 since you filmed this video. Should consider coming back to it!
Agree that I have no idea why they would not Translated to English as lot of People in the West would of Love this Game
There are patches now
@@n64glennplant That is Very True. Does make up for it but They could made Money with this Game.
I have a Patched Rom
this is like mixing Pokemon with Medabots, Power Stone and Virtual-On.

wow, this was uploaded on my birthday, that's special considering that i grew on Custom Robo GCN
Didn't knew there was a N64-Version. But i loved "Custom Robo Arena" on my DS. Was a very fun and solid game.
1999 is the end year for 64 pretty much, they had just localized majoras mask, thats a big reason games dont get released here, the dreamcast was already out

This is another one of the few Virtual On Cyber Troopers rip off that's decently fun
I have this game. It is really great. The level design, gameplay, music. All great. It's like a cross between Pokemon, and Super smash bros. I recommend anyone to buy this.
theres an gamecube version we got, is it a sequel or a remake? i need to look into this series
+DeViiaTe Sequel. They dropped the "Battle Revolution" subtitle as it was the 1st one in the West.
I absolutely love the Custom Robo game for the Gamecube.

I had assumed the ds game was a port of remake in a sense, i really enjoyed the combat of that but the story dragged on!
I played the version on the DS
Looks great, would love to play it, but dont see me playing this in japanese, gotta check out the GC-game
Damn, color me impressed with these graphics. For the 64 era, this game has some pretty clear and crisp graphics and resolution...one of the better graphical representations I've seen on the 64.

I wish Nintendo would release a new one for Wii U or 3DS.
I hope they localize the Custom Robo games for the N64 Switch Online. They just look fun.
There’s fan patches now for both, doubt it’ll be in English on switch however

For anyone interested, there is a netplay discord for the CR games. (Mainly the GC one) Here is the link. discord.gg/nsWh3Yw
I played this game a lot when I was a kid, I didn't understand shit but I loved it, I never beated the game but I finnaly found it, FINALLY!
I myself just received my copy of Custom Robo from Japan today! I have wasted (spent) most of my day playing it. I've played a ROM of it before, and beaten it, but it just wasn't the same. You can't truly experience Custom Robo without owning it in a physical form. It is simply amazing.
Nice video, by the way. Best video on the game I've ever seen.
Love your vids mate especially the Japanese Eye.. just got this game in and really enjoying it all thnx to this vid xD

I dont think that this game would rivaled pokemon because the main games were on the gameboy/color
yeah its still a fun game though for fans and there's the translation now too
Do Super Robot Wars 64 next please. Then I can see if I can go through it
They should rerelease this for the switch
Company missed on Millions with not releasing outside of Japan
Yeah. We have English patches now thankfully though
@@n64glennplant How do get the English patch for V2 because that's the one I have for the N64... 🎮🕹️🎮
cool 🎉
I played the GameCube version.
Taka Michinoku's theme song!
INDEED!
can anyone explain why japanese games have some english text?

insane they didn't localise this one. would have been popular in the west.
At least they got really good translation patches 😃
Does anyone know if this game needs the expansion pak
I don’t believe it does
Thanks, I was buying a reproduction cart of this game and it said it required one. And thank you for your review on wonder project j2 I recently picked it up and loved it thanks.
Looks like I'd like it in English.
An English Patch recently came out for it. The patch for V2 is also being developed as we speak.
Looks like Virtual On Sega Saturn
You compared this to Pokémon and said it has what Pokémon doesn't? you're so wrong.
acully it did get a English port but only on the game cube with worst visuals simily the same game. its can be downloaded on the pc using a rom and a gamecube emulator no patch need if you go to the right site. if you got any question about the site I used just ask below this comment.and I will answer as soon as possable. also its not a dercectly the same game just that the game is the same when it comes to game play
