- In this video, I'm going to leave settings and gear out of it and just talk about me (or you); the photographer. What can we do to give ourselves the best chance of grabbing the shots we want?
Great tips, Rich.
Great tips. Thanks Richard.
Knowing the sport is definitely a help. I used to shoot soccer for my old club, and it helps when you know the ins and out of the game, as you can quickly see patterns emerging. Like, how far do the goalies kick outs go, or how do team like to do set pieces. These allow you to predict where the ball is likely to go, and thereby be prepared for the action as the ball arrives.
When I got to shoot rugby matches, I used the same principle, and targeted the line outs and scrums which allowed me to somewhat be in position. That way I knew I had a few good action shots immediately and could relax a bit. Plus, because those set-pieces happen regularly, you might spot the same players in conversation, or nice symmetrical framing, or all manner of repeatable scenarios allowing you to get a great shot.
