Correction Kareem's parents and grandparents immigrated here from Trinidad, they where not born in New York. His father's people were actually Yoruba, from Nigeria before going to Trinidad
As a lifelong muslim from childhood I always loved and admired fellow Muslims who were the sports champions of their era such as Kareem 'Abdul Jabbar and Muhammad Ali. I thoroughly enjoyed your video, only complaint is it would be easier to follow chronologically. Great video. 👍 😊
Kareem Abdul Jabbar ....I was at the Warrior- Laker Game...for his retirement. His present was a sailboat. At the Coliseum in Oakland. They lower that front the top to the court. The Gift for Kareem. It was a wonderful game. I forgot who won Herman Jones San Francisco, CA
Fantastic video! I knew Kareem Abdul-jabbar . . . I met him while living in Milwaukee - the city that got him straight out of UCLA! I was in High School back then and my part-time job was at the record store where Kareem bought all his albums. I was 3rd or 4th in seniority so my opinion of various albums didn't carry much weight. Still, I used to help keep the kids off Kareem and do whatever necessary to make his stop at our record store pleasant. I always wondered whether Kareem remembered me during his Laker years. Many years later, when The Milwaukee Bucks won the championship and Kareem came back to Milwaukee, I thought that. Kareem, do you remember Radio Doctors where you used to get your albums? I do! Certainly do!
Kareem’s imam at one point, was a prominent member of the N.O.I.; he was Elijah Muhammad's national secretary at their Chicago national headquarters from 1954 to 1957. He also severely criticized the Nation. This post barely scratched the surface on his connection to the N.O.I. and the massacre of his family members (by N.O.I. members) and the 1977 Hanafi Siege! 😳
@@rlbk525 I already know these things. The teachings of the NOI did not have any impact whatsoever on Kareems life, neither did it have that much of an impact on Kareems imams life (Imam Hamass Abdul khaalis). Despite him once being the national secretary of the NOI, He later vehemently opposed their doctrine and became a staunch sunni orthodox muslim, by way of the Hanafi school of thought, thus Breaking all ties with the NOI. Kareem had absolutely nothing to do with the NOI, and he condems their doctrine to this day.
I knew Kareem Abdul Jabbar as a lengendary basketball player and that he is highly intelligent, a great thinker and writer but I never knew much about his family, childhood background or the people that influenced him in his life. I should read his book. Thanks for this video it was very enlightening.
Excellent video about one of my childhood sports heroes and fellow UCLA Bruins, Kareem "Cap" Abdul Jabbar. His reach and impact went far beyond the hardwoods of Hoops, and our society is better as a result!
The 1st time I heard the word "superfluous" was when Kareem was responding to a sports reporters' stupid question. I immediately went to my Websters dictionary and have been hooked on words ever since.
Great video. The only major thing you missed was the full story on his "lost" first marriage. The girl Kareem was involved with during most of his years at UCLA and who probably was the true love of his life was the "Benavshad" he wrote about in Giant Steps. "Benavshad" was actually the actress Pam Grier. Her refusal to give up her acting career was the reason behind his mentor insisting that they end their marriage plans and his essentially choosing his eventual first wife Habiba instead. The more detailed story of their relationship can be found in Pam Grier's autobiography "Foxy." It was obvious from reading her account of their relationship that they deeply loved one another, and that she maintained a great deal of affection and respect for him long after their relationship ended.
@Antonio Miranda I knew he played for UCLA and the Milwaukee Bucks and finished with the Lakers but didn't know about the earlier years in his youth growing up.
Great work gents! What you and the crew covered was on time! I knew a fair amount about Jabbar, BUT you also were able to shed light on his life I wasn't aware of! I'm looking forward to more excellent from you and your crew, which after viewing the info on Kareem, I'm really looking forward to what you and your crew will come up with! Excellent job, cant wait for more of your stories! Mr. H.
That was awesome and very educational.... The best video that I have yet seen on Social Media... And I don't say that lightly... Ask FB.... Because I have done plenty of time in FB Jail
I enjoyed the video and the content I learned several things about this great man. A few thoughts you should have gone into his activism in the 60s in his support for civil rights and for Ali. He put his whole career on the line. In addition you could have mentioned how many championships he won. Lastly why would you end this man's story with the arrest of one of his children? Perhaps shaping your stories to end with the person you are talking about would be better. Just a thought. Otherwise great work I wish you well.
Great video! Just one thing his son is not in Sweden, that’s Swedish as in part of the Swedish Medical system. I worked at one of their hospitals in Seattle.
This video was fascinating. My uncles took me to see Alcindor at the time. Next was when Hillhouse High SCHOOL OF NEW HAVEN CT. LOST AFTER 4 OF Starting 5 was fouled out in N.Y.
Regarding KAJs introversion. Cannot remember who said it (was a coach) but he said, “No man can be an island unto himself, but Kareem gave it a damn good try.”
The story about Kareem's dad riding the bus was great. Pat Riley had very strict rules about no one was allowed to ride.....but Riley was smart enough to let it go! Turning point in that series....Kareem had a horrible game before that.

Kareem is one of the greatest basketball player and before he picked up a ball his intellect started from birth.
