  • HOUSTON (AP) -- Brandon Wilson went end line to end zone to score a touchdown with an Oklahoma missed field goal and No. 15 Houston beat the third-ranked Sooners 33-23 Saturday at NRG Stadium.
    Regardless of whether Houston (1-0) ends up in the Big 12 if the conference expands, coach Tom Herman's Cougars made an opening statement that could have season-long ramifications on the College Football Playoff.
    Elusive quarterback Greg Ward Jr. passed for 321 yards and two touchdowns for Houston. Wilson, though, provided the key play in the biggest regular-season nonconference game the Cougars have played in 25 years.
    When Oklahoma kicker Austin Seibert's 54-yard field goal attempt came up just short, Wilson reached up to catch the ball while barely keeping his feet in bounds. Reminiscent of Auburn's Kick Six against Alabama in 2013, Wilson came flying out of the end zone, hit the sideline and hurdled a fallen teammate to score what went into the books as a 100-yard return.
    "I thought I stepped out, but I didn't," Wilson said. "I just saw the green grass and I scored."
    Wilson's dash made it 26-17 Cougars with 8:28 left in the third quarter.
    "I was just looking for flags," Herman said. "It looked too good to be true."
    Oklahoma called a timeout before trying the kick, which Herman said allowed Houston to set up for the return the Cougars practice about once a week.
    "You know you have to cover it, but the personnel on the field isn't the best cover guys because the best cover guys wouldn't be able to protect the field goal. So you're in a little bit of a dilemma," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "I don't really second-guess. I've seen Austin make that quite a few times."
    Baker Mayfield threw for 323 yards and two scores for defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma (0-1).

      Wish we could have. UT pulled a behind the scenes back stab on two fronts and we darlings lost it. Why not LSU come and play Houston? The second largest LSU fan base is hear and Washington Ave and Midtown is nearby for good fun. It would be fun for fans from both sides without anything other than a good time at stake.

      It was especially nice to see "little ole Houston" beat up on the Big 12 heavy weight. Soon after this the Big 12(10 or whatever .. TCU and Baylor don't belong) had their vote and kept big bad Houston out. Well., that's fine, the ACC has some great teams from real urban areas. Heck, the AAC should add UCLA and Miami in the mix. Why not. Big City Rocks!

    Watching this is bittersweet. Herman got wined and dined and told friend at the UT Touchdown Club in Houston (of all places) that if Houston would have been allowed in the Big 12 then he would have stayed. Texas played a major back door deal to try and get a campus in Houston, get our support and act like they backed us into the Big 12. They and OU and everyone else who recruits from the strong recruitment center of the City of Houston never intended to allow us in. Texas had their people distracting Herman and a whole lot more. I despise the Big 12, especially OU and UT so much now. This game was great. Don't like seeing Herman and his wife at the end of the game as he used us as Sumlin and Briles did. We need another Bill Yeoman, and our boys have to keep winning. Really want to see Tech fall far more than I want to see us beat Arizona. Oh, this OU game was a great game. All the OU fans left saying things like, "Welcome to the Big 12". Bittersweet now. But a new year is coming.

    • @marcelagalvan8323
      @marcelagalvan8323 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, but you're not beating Tech. UH will always be a stepping stone job. UH offers nothing. The fan base is very limited, and pro sports run Houston.

    • @lpmonks
      @lpmonks 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marcela Galvan we will see. We do much better filling our stadium than most Big 12 schools. You are right though Pro football killed Rice and Houston. If we remain a stepping stone then make the G5 a Division 2 so to play for our own smaller National Championship. Tell you what. You say we won't beat Tech. Okay. Let's see.

    Holy shit! Houston Cougars are my team to make it to the playoffs, they didnt just win against Oklahoma, they denied them any hope of a comeback. Houstons offense sputtered in the 4th quarter (still amazing talent at every position) but that defense is the fuckin shit! Big ass safeties crushing running backs before the first down line, a terrifying freshman in Ed Oliver who had a heisman hopeful scared shitless. And players trying to rip the ball out, instead of going for the big hit. I know this is crazy after witnessing one game but that game, and that Cougar D, was no fuckin joke. No comparisons to past defenses, but when's the last time you saw a college football defense play like that.

      I should say that's if Alabama and Houston make it along with Ohio State. No offense but profit wise it's better to save an Ohio State vs Alabama potential matchup for the title rather than have them play first round when you could have a potential back story with Houston vs Ohio State or Herman vs Meyer.

That said, last 2 years,,,, Louisville would have beat a chump, maybe 35- 20 entire game a year ago. I hope for Houston and us we got undeated before we meet. We were until recently a member of the AAC, We still must beat Florida St. AND Clemon, before this becomes a discussion. I guarantee u we will get 1 of them, and confident both. Gonna b a challenge. No disrespect, Ive seen our programs been through 1 rodeo. Just hope The Ville and Hoston stays unfeated we meet. Someone needs to raid this BCS BS and shock the world! Saban, couldnt handle our QB, Manziel proved that. Lmfao, this is not Manziel....... Lamar Jackson is mature and the real deal.

    Baker Maywho? Loved this game. We just
    Came off of beating Florida State in the Peach Bowl the year before and several OU fans congratulated us saying “welcome to the Big 12.” Then Texas did its underground work and kept us out later
    That year which opened the door for them to get Herman, which ruined his career and their alumni couldn’t take what he couldn’t do at Texas what Herman did for n Houston. It was a loss for Houston, Herman, and of course Texas.
    Now, Texas has gone to the SEC, which opens the door for the Big 12 to really grow without them involved.
