Hey Baby Sister, tell me something CK, how come you look 55 years old still , you are defying age !!! I Love you too and can't wait to see you (hopefully this year sometime)
Mr. Watson, this is literally the first time I've heard you speak; speak you did! As a kid I stared at many Rufus album covers, trying to read the personality of each band member. Well, needless to say, I have learned so much about the group. Many thanks for your frankness. I'm a fan of your work continuously. LP
@@myvidworld1 on vacay listening to "Destiny" now! Soooo smooth, sooo vacay suitable. Some day to shake your hand, some day! If ever performing in New Orleans, I'm there to support you!
God bless you brotha! I'm happy for you and your family and your girls getting to college. I hope you and Tony get back talking and work things out and heal. That band was some of my earliest memories of great music.❤ 🙏🏿
Hi Mr Watson thank you for your contribution to music thanks to you and Rufus and Chaka im currently learning your amazing song Sweet Thing on a nylon string guitar and look forward to watching more videos of you speaking
Wow. Thank you for the backstory Mr. Watson. What a blessing that benefactor was to your family. Rufus, EWF, P-Funk, Isleys, Jacksons are my all-time favorites.
Thanks, Mr. Watson! I loved Rufus...still do! You guys got me through some depressing times and listening to your music made me forget my problems and just groove to all your music. "Little Boy Blue" is a favorite. "Once You Get Started" is a funk classic. "At Midnight" has an incredible groove. "Stop on By" is by far my favorite version with those great harmony vocals and smooth, silky walking bass riffs! "Please Pardon Me" ....these songs are all beatifully performed. Thanks for all the great music! 🎹🥁🎸💯😊
This is what has been missing from my adoration for Rufus, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, and Rufus and Chaka the background stories of how the songs came to be. I've always been so into Chaka's vocals, but then in later years I found myself more and more mesmerized by the music behind her voice and felt you guys are just as phenomenal. Incidentally, I'm glad you're showing your white hair because it reminds you've been here almost my whole life!
Ms Micia, I just got chills reading this ... I am so happy when I see that its not only Chaka ... but people know and love the guys in the band too, that just makes me smile ...
There wouldn't be a Chaka Khan if it wasn't for Rufus! I give Rufus and God all the credit for Chaka Khan's success because, they're the ones who've gave her the opportunity to join and sing with them and made her what she is today.
I've always loved Mr. Bobby Watson's bass playing (the solos and bass riffs on "Dance Wit Me" are just off the charts)! Ms.Chaka Khan is one of a kind, and so is the band Rufus--one of the best rhythm sections in the business. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings to you, Ms. Khan, and to all of the members of the great groove masters band, Rufus.
Wow, Mr. Bobby Watson. A featured player in my favorite group of all-time: Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. I am 48 years old and when I 18, I purchased Rufus' debut album on CD. And from the 1st song "Keep It Comin'", it was all over. I immediately fell in love with this band. I made it my business to know everyone's name. Chaka, i already knew, but there was Al Ciner, Kevin Murphy, Tony Maiden, Dennis Belfield and Bobby Watson. Their music was very much alive and each musician was on fire. With each passing song the listener comes to the realization that Rufus is the definition of a cohesive band. Everyone is essential and a integral part of this collective. I have adored them for over 30 years. Brother Bobby, thanks for sharing your stories. I appreciate you taking the time to share. There's a reason why you were one of the musicians called on to bring "Off The Wall" to fruition. You are the best. And based on what I know about Quincy Jones, he doesn't half-step when picking the the line-up for his productions. GOD bless you, Bobby. Watching this was definitely a delight.
Well I am so glad to read your comment, makes me happy and I feel so good being a part of a unit with the other guys, thats what its all about supporting each other - thank you and I just want you to know "you made my day" ....
Thank You John, I enjoy sharing a little of the inside stuff, unless you know someone in the band, you could never know some of the things that happened !
I really loved the insight you offer sharing your experiences within the group. So sad to hear how amateurish practices and bad spending caused the destruction of the band. In a perfect world, all of you could have still knocked it out the park to packed audiences to this day. I just saw EFW and Santana at Jones Beach in NYC this past weekend. The three original members have been together for 50 YEARS and Santana is 75 YEARS old and still playing with fire. So I know if Rufus and Chaka was together with good spirits, I have no doubt the same exact thing would happen as well. Many continued blessings in you and your family's lives and as a bass player as well, your iconic line on "Rock With You" to me is one of the truest examples of groove, pocket and taste around. 🙏🏾
Man, Ebert thank you so much for your comment, I am thrilled and I agree with you, over the years all that we have collectively learned could produce a great Rufus Chaka live concert ... There is a lot of good music to be enjoyed ~
Nicknak stay tuned and subscribe if you want to, I am so happy to learn that people are loving hearing about the real Rufus Chaka stories .. So I am gonna make more ,, there is a lot of history and a lot of good music !!!
Hello, Bobby. Man I loved your bass line on Rufus Albums and when you did Off the wall for Michael Jackson, that broke the camels back. You and Rufus had a gig in Houston back in April of ‘75 and flew back to LA well I was on that plane. I saw Chaka and said to myself, that fine chick is not from Houston. Then you came board , I said to myself, I am on the plane with Rufus. You all made this Marine’s plane ride so special that I will never forget it. Thanks man for bringing back that memory. May God bless you and keep you.
Im not in the music business but from your experiences I see how things can happen. 70 years old, and still learning, your lesson and attitude has inspired me...fix what you can and let it go. I see why people fight, that ego is the separator ...you showed me to check mine every day...tks!
Bobby, first let me say what a blessing and honor it has been to grow up as a Bass Guitarist who was one of your biggest fans, to become your friend and Band Mate!!! I love that you are one of the few of us who speaks what you feel in a way that is as tasteful, respectful and considerate as possible while staying Truthful and transparent. I was literally talking about you playing on "Rock With You" YESTERDAY!!! Thank you for welcoming me as a member of RUFUS, it was a joy to sing bgvs and Leads. Then to be asked to be the Front Guy for an All Star Legendary band with Michael Thompson, John JR Robinson, Greg Matheson and yourself, Bobby Watson was a Dream! You've been an Awesome Inspiration, friend and human being! Continued Blessings 🙏🏽 Romeo Johnson
Romeo man, we had soooo much fun in both those bands .. I miss us playing together in some form .. thanks for your great comment on this video, I'm surprised at the response its getting but it makes me realize that a lot of people are fans of Rufus the band and not only just Chaka Khan !! The bassists like yourself who have commented on this post just blow me away .. I have been such a lucky guy and appreciate all good that comes my way ,,,, Thank You Romeo !!!! Love ya
I grew up on Rufus and always thought they had some of the most soulful songs of the 70's! As a DJ I used to do a Bobby & Tony (Rufus) vs Nile & Bernard (Chic). After watching this I think I figured out why Rufus has not been accepted in the Rock and Roll HOF. If only Rufus could have put the cherry on top with that 60 city tour ... the media would've seen that you deserve to be . Thank you for your musical contribution.
I had a wonderful time attending Rufus’ reunion concert at Howard Beach in Long Island, NY, in Fall 2001. 👏🏽 Rufus is one of my all-time favorite bands, up there with Earth, Wind and Fire, with whom you were touring that year. I’d love for the core members from the group’s heyday to perform and record together again. But I understand what a snowball’s chance there is of that happening. So I won’t waste time pressing the issue. 🤷🏽♂️ I’ll always love and appreciate the incredible and incomparable music Rufus made. *Thank you* for your invaluable contributions to those recordings!
Really enjoyed the video Bobby, me and my friend Jude will be talking about the record Ask Rufus (1977), on our new podcast so it was really great to have your insight about the band!
Definitely my favorite Rufus recording ,, the tunes were so different from any other groups and artists then, just some cool stuff ,, Claire Fischer was a Martian from another planet the way he arranged strings and orchestra parts
Mr. Watson, I’m sitting here now trying to play ‘What Am I Missing’ lol. My buddy in Italy, Nick Muneratti, helped me with it. His channel is Nickbassic. I think I got a comment from you earlier about Q. Man that’s fascinating. Must’ve been incredible being in the studio with him. Is he nice? lol. I guess there were a lot of songs recorded that didn’t make it onto the Masterjam album. Pound for pound they were all masterpieces to me. One day you gotta show me if I’m playing it right. Hoping you and your family are having a peaceful holiday season.
Chet, keep it up man, you got the right attitude and I have to make a confession, I too study baselines, right now I am learning James Jamerson jr. baseline on the Earth Wind & Fire song "September" (Verdine did not play this line, it was Jamerson Jr. who is a great bassist just like his Father James Jamerson Sr. - Love Quincy who is a smart producer that goes for the throat in his productions ,,, never sacrifices, always aims for the best songs, best performances, best mixes, all of it !!!
I was at that universal amphitheater show in LA, it was the most amazing concert that I had ever been to, it was a magical night everyone was singing every song including me. Thanks for the music, Bobby
Thank you!! I always loved Rufus and Chaka Khan and still do!! Fantastic music that is forever!! Thank you for letting us know the “inside” story. Yes, the music business is tough. Fans only see the fame, money and glamour, but there is another side to it!
Wow!!!! I am so glad I found this video!!! I was a huge fan of Rufus w. Chaka Khan -- and have always wondered what happened to everyone. I just subscribed!!! Thank you!!!!!
When Heatwave & Rufus toured together back in the 70's instead of picking up a lady and going back to our rooms, Me Hawk & Rod Temperton would end up at a Dennys or an all night restaurant .. We would drink coffee and talk about music for hours ,, Miss those days , Miss Rod too !!
Thanks for your take Bobby. I actually saw you all play September 16th, 2001 right after 9/11 at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, NY. I remember it cause I thought for sure the show would be cancelled.. sure enough soon after you all headed west. It was an amazing show, thanks for all the music!!
Rob, I remember now, what fun it was to play Albany (and Chicago) again after not being there since the 70's .. I went to Gino's and got me some pizza for the soundcheck ~
I found this story to be absolutely fascinating. Thanks so much for taking the time to share it. (Big fan of your work!) Your live performance of "Tell Me Something Good" on the Midnight Special in July '74 totally blew me away.
Thank you for explaining what happened. My friends and I truly missed your genius. Just know the artistry of the entire Rufus band meant a lot to many.
Great stuff. Love your work and your humbleness. Street Player written by Hawk and Danny from Chicago. You guys did it a year before Chicago did it. Love both versions.
@@myvidworld1 absolutely. There was also a group called the Bucketheads/z a house music group sampled it too. Again, you’ve brought joy and influenced so many worldwide. Btw, I loved that chord you played towards the beginning of the bridge in Rock With You. Your bass was absolutely singing my brother.
Bobby Watson, my name is Anthony Patton. I enjoyed listening to your experiences. You have done something I've wanted to do all of my life. I have a lot of great songs but have never known how to get them heard. You're blessed, man, and I've loved listening to you.
Well Mr. Anthony, don't give up on your songs, its all about bumping into people and networking and someone accidentally hearing your music and introducing you to someone else, keep writing, its the best thing you can do !!
Wow. Mr Watson. I kinda stumbled onto your channel and I am so very glad that I did. You were always my favorite band member because you were on bass and seemed to have a strong resemblance to my older brother who had been killed in Vietnam. I naturally gravitated that way. I had no idea that Rene was your brother. I did buy that album back in the 1980s. I had just gotten out of the Marines. I fell in love with Angela. She was one tasty little bird! What happened to those two? It’s so good to see my favorite Rufus musician doing well, looking great and happily reflecting on his long illustrious career. This was indeed a treat and now I get to watch some more of your videos. You know, back in the early 1970s, my dream was to be a recording engineer. I worked with several bands in the DC area as a roadie and sound man. I built speakers and repaired microphones and guitars and such. The bands were Friction and Starpoint. Unfortunately, I had no idea of how racist that part of the music industry was. When I encountered a great deal of pushback, trying get an apprenticeship, I didn’t know what to do. So I joined the Marines and repaired radios for 4 years getting a solid understanding of electronics way beyond what I understood previously. I say all that to say that I can appreciate what you and all the others, including my true love Chaka, went through and probably still have to deal with. I am a huge Chaka supporter and I have been aware of her challenges and flaws up close and far away. She is indeed something special and so are you sir. Always admired your presentation and bass playing. Really great to see you here mastering this technology. ✌🏽 👊🏽 🫡
Sorry to hear about your brother, and thanks for all the great comments ,, Yes, I am so happy to reach this age after years on the road touring and recording etc.... Rene & Angela are my favorite people and Rene is not a real brother but we did grow up together so he feels like a little brother to me. I taught him how to drive
At first I thought the shade was tongue and cheek humor but it was REAL... hilarious. 😂 But sad too because you're my favorite group ever. Your fans needed that tour. Your basslines and style have impacted my deep love for music to this day almost 50 yrs later.
Hey there Taylorlee, Its not always messy hearing the truth - I hope you have a great interview w my baby sister ,,, and she is always honest so please let me know what she says ~
@@myvidworld1 I can only ask 2 questions so I wanted to ask 1.What happened on verzuz with her against Stephanie Mills because Chaka can sing but that performance was well... not her best 2. Question is going to be in regards to this specific video about how Rufus broke up, it's interesting sometimes how ppl can see things so differently I just want to know if her truth is the same as your truth
@@taylorlee3044I can still see my comment so the powers that be which govern this channel probably hid my sh*t, what's your email? And I don't know why because I didn't say nothing wrong just told the the truth, if you dont come into that one on one puckered up and ready to kiss a** she will end it and not refund your money, but Chile whatever.
@@taylorlee3044 That is going to be so interesting to hear what she thinks, please let me know her reaction to my Video ,,, I can't wait to hear it ~ Yeah, I saw that Stephanie Mills thingy and it was not a good look, poor baby ~
@myvidworld1 Bobby do you think in the near future there will be Rufus one on one's like Chaka is doing? The fan pays the fee and everything is done via video call and 100% built around your schedule I'm a Rufus fan not just a Chaka fan and I would love the opportunity to ask you all some questions and I know many other fans would too. But if that's not really your thing I get that. Oh and I plan to record my one on one so I will paste the audio under this comment for you to hear it for yourself , that way you don't have to take my word.
Hey Brother Bobby! I’m just seeing this. You really schooled me about some managers that don’t know their business. I’ve also been in that situation. I’m still here in Japan. I still remember the last time we saw each other. At the U.S. Embassy. You were getting outta dodge. We really miss you. You were such a great person and friend. Really glad that you were still able to rise above all of that negativity. Me and Z hope to see you again someday. He still talks about your mixing board and how clean his guitar sounded through it. Peace my Brother!
ear Bobby Watson,I hope this message finds you well. My name is Charles E., and I wanted to take a moment to express my deep admiration and appreciation for you and the band Rufus.I first discovered Rufus when I was nine years old, and I remember being captivated by the album cover. Seeing you, Andre Fisher, and my favorite, Chaka Khan, inspired me in ways I can't fully express. Your music has been a significant part of my life, providing joy, comfort, and inspiration through the years.I've recently been revisiting your work and learning more about the challenges and battles the band faced. It's incredible to see how you persevered and continued to create such beautiful, timeless music. As a loyal fan, I would love the opportunity to connect with you and the band members, to share my gratitude and hear more about your journey. Your kindness and talent have always shone through your music, and it would mean the world to me to become friends with such extraordinary artists.Thank you for the music and the memories.Warm regards,Charles E.
Man, reading this is bringing a nice happy feeling to me Bro! Thank you so much for your comment, When I was growing up in South Central LA I had no idea I would end up playing my little music in a band that would touch and inspire the musicians and people in general ,,, this is better than money !!! Lol
A big hello from France 🇫🇷 Mr Watson ! I’m 21 and love your baselines ! But I’m wondering ! Are you also the producer of Rene and Angela ? I’ve got the vinyls and it’s written Bobby Watson 🙋🏿♂️ Edit : I Watched the video and that’s actually you !!! You’re so cool ! Your baselines are awesome and your production on Rene & Angela is awesome ! How was your experience working with them ??? 💫 Thanks for being here on TH-cam🤩🤩🤩
Hi Mr Ezekiel, young French guy ,,,, Yep, thats me and I'm glad you are a Rene & Angela Fan too / Its been an absolute joy to work with them on their music over the years, they both are two talented people and I was happy to be a part of their growth ~
Thnx for the mini, and super informative documentary. Judging from the TH-cam clips that I've seen, you're definitely the captain of the monster ship known as Rufus . Soldier on,fam.
Amazing! Thx for sharing Bobby. I actually stumbled on your vid when searching to see if u were still hanging tough. I started playing bass a couple of years ago and recently decided to dive into some Chaka stuff (Stay is my #1 jam of yours atm. Your signature style has me completely caught up in covering one Rufus song after the next…and the fact that you played on my face MJ album of all time, well that is Justine more head shaker for me in amazement of your playing. Thank you for all the waaay funky bass lines and glad to see you happy and healthy brother. ✌🏾
Mr. Kennedy man, thank you so much for this comment, I feel so humbled to get compliments on my bass playing.. "Stay" was written by Chaka & Moon Calhoun and was so different from any grooves that Rufus had done before so I had fun making up the bass line and making it fit in the groove with the drums and the guitar ~ I love my Job
@@myvidworld1 Thank you Bobby, the bassline totally makes Stay...I mean how you stay so tight in the pocket is just beautiful and so fun for me to play. Luv the humility but you cranked out some of the coldest bass lines ever (Ain't Nobody, Sweet Thing, Everlasting Love, Hollywood...come on) - with one of the most signature voices of all time. Still making my way thru Street Player, next up Ask Rufus...(btw did you play Turn on a fretless?...that song is so crazy different), and Finale...wow. An honor to hear from you and I hope you know how much joy your music brings to us, five decades and counting!
Bro I’ve been listening to you and Rufus with Chaka since back in the 70’s and even now, I’m a student at Musicians Institute bass performance studies and what I would give to hang out in you and learn from all the experience and knowledge you possess, I enjoyed the vid and keep making them we love hearing the stories! 💯🤘🏽🎵🎶
Thanks for telling your story Bobby. I appreciate your candor and insight. I often wondered about the MJ connection, but who can second guess Quincy. He knows what he wants. After years working in business affairs at record labels, I know so well how inept management can really wreak havoc on an artist’s career. I would love to hear responses from other members. I have heard other guys express some interest, but I’m disheartened hearing about Tony’s hands. I didn’t particularly care for the way this ended. That was the only mean spirited part of this.
thnx for your comment, and thats totally right about management. at any level you don't want to mistake "experience" and a "drive to succeed" just to hire your girlfriend or wife just so she can look out for your behalf ??? thats silly to me ~
I really appreciate the story Bobby. I totally understand how no one in their right mind would want to dwell on all of that toxicity and unnecessary loss or to go about spreading that energy at large. In short , it’s the perfect recipe for the doldrums and the best thing is to keep it moving and not let it become a a well known conversation you like to have with just random people- lol Mannn I sure wish we could hang sometimes , probably writing , whether we had planned to do any writing or not lol. Plus , when you’re new in any big town , a sort of “point” guy/person-(not a whole chaperone) - is a huge blessing. After a few days of observing how you move about town , that would likely become my model for navigating the culture-in-general as I went about my way. Great story telling as always and this was the best because audience s want closure too. hahahaha P.S. I looked for you the other day on the War set w/ EWF that Verdines wife Shelly filmed on her iPhone but she didn’t get a good close up that time ,plus, she was vibing to War herself -lol The song “Why can’t we be friends” was being performed in the clip. P.P.S.Also , I happen to have payed attentions to N8 (East) and Lionel Richies tutorial on how not to piss of Quincy Jones by being too pushy/difficult. It simply isn’t the reason they call anyone.🤷🏾♂️ Gotta run. Have a great day man. Peace ✌🏾
Man Beau, always glad to see your comments .... You never ever want to try to do anything to Quincy except "LEARN" from him .....The Timing was very good for me because After working w Quincy and Bruce Swedien I went straight into doing Rene & Angela's stuff and I know they got tired of me saying to them everyday "Go for the Throat" with the music .. thats what Q would always say to us in Rufus sessions, plus I got lucky and reached out to Bruce Swedien who came and mixed Rene & Angela's biggest album "Street Called Desire" !!!!!!
@Beau Shelby - sir, so true "we" discussed the same topic in 2013 & coming from such a talented individual, to see its still jabs him 4 decades later, was painful to "listen to", again.. "here"; when we don't use others's negative attempts to destroy us/hurt - to motivate us to rise above...it does become poisonous/toxic...and no matter how much we say "aww that didn't really hurt", when we keep repeating it, its so very apparent it did & worse, still does & is eroding us. Reminds me of a story my grampa told me, I was 5, "when a jack ass kicks you...consider the source" & another 'story' - a farmer had a donkey, the donkey had served him well, but one day, while working, the animal fell into a large well & started to "cry out", instead of the farmer valuing him & trying to save him, he got tired of hearing him "cry"...so he started throwing dirt down the hole to bury him/shut him up...the donkey saw a figure holding a shovel & said, "wonderful my master is coming to save me", but instead - a large amount of dirt landed on the top of his head, he quieted down & shook it off...then, each time, climbing on TOP of the dirt the farmer threw down instead of sulking, he kept using his energy to climb on top & pack it down...daily the farmer would throw down the dirt...after a few shovels, the donkey realized, "he's not trying to save me, he's trying to BURY ME"!! 😆 So EVERY DAY...the farmer threw dirt down the hole, the donkey, shook it off, stood on top of it & packed it down... until FINALLY the donkey was high enough to step out & walk away to freedom!!! Moral of the story...well kinda apparent...at least it was for me! Story's like these stick with children, I thank God for my grampa! I've lived my entire life like that...free🙂 been crapped on so much, sometimes I though I was a bird perch 🤣😂...but guess what...like Maya Angelo use to say..."Still I rise"... perhaps hearing the same thing from you, sir...BW may LISTEN...oh he "heard" me...but apparently coming from me, he didn't LISTEN. I really respect BW, he's just a talented, gifted & kind little "pussy cat"...just wears his heart on his sleeve!! And somehow finds it difficult, both to forgive & move on...it was once said...unforgiveness is like taking poison & expecting the other person to die. Forgiveness doesn't mean we are saying, oh well & don't acknowledge we've been crapped on - it just frees us from the hold their 💩 has on us & it's smell. Mr. Shelby, ya all go write some music & get that fresh air goin! Best to you both!!
Mr Watson.. ( In my Opinion)You are the Driving force behind " Rock With You" You've had a wonderful career, so glad to see you're doing well! Also, love your Bass Playing!
Hey, Brother...you guys came to Chicago 9 days after September 11th...Rufus, Chaka and Earth, Wind & Fire lit up the Arie Crown Theatre that September 20th, 2001, on a Thursday night and was literally the best performance of the night, although EWF tore the place up as well...I'm glad that show didn't get canceled because we definitely needed that night for some emotional/mental/musical healing after what 9/11 did to us as a nation...I'm glad you're here filling us in about the whereabouts of all the members...peace! ✌🏿🎵🎶😎
Lucky you. Because the September 15th date at Jones Beach was definitely cancelled. Surprisingly there was no NYC date scheduled. Without Maurice White, EWF just doesn't feel the same. Nowadays, I only go to see bass players in concert. However, I would still go to a "70s FunkFest Tour": Rufus, EWF, P-Funk or ConFunkShun at the Barclays Center🏟️🎸🎤
Yes, my "play brother" Rene Moore and Angela Winbush came to me and asked me to help them get going ... I didn't know what I was doing, but all 3 of us ended up learning as we went along ~
Really appreciate these insights and 'the other side' of the various stories that were doing the rounds over the years. Like Lisa Stansfield once said, when you put on a Rufus record, you have to listen to the WHOLE album. Ain't no other way. Thanks so much Mr Watson!
Representing gen X, the kids who were breakdancing on the cardboard in the 80's. I transcribed one of your bass lines. Hope I got it right. Thank you sir for your contributions to music.
Michael you have no idea how happy this makes me man, to have someone transcribing a bass line I played is the best compliment I could ask for ,,, I consider myself an Average player with a love for the "Pocket" (grooving)
Sad to hear after all the great music that Tony's wife ruined a lot of things for everyone. I wish you all well though, and thanks for everlasting music!!!!
Bobby Watson… thank you for the wisdom🙏🏾🙏🏾 I hung out with in Japan in the late 80’s …. you and Tony St James were working with Epo….. man you are a big influence in my bass playing🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Cary, man I am so old I cannot remember , but I do remember playing w Epo and some of the British musicians w Tony on drums .. those were some fun days .... Good to hear from you Brother !!
LOVE, LOVE , LOVE me some Chaka and Rufus. Have all the albums. Seen yall live back in day. My question is why your Albums never had lyrics on the back...WHY? Everybody did it back in the day. Rufus & Chaka had the greatest songs ever.
Thank you so much, I don't know the answer to that one, that's the Album designer people at the Record Label's job to include all that info, now that you mention it, I remember looking at my favorite artists LP's and seeing lyrics on them ,, I guess some did and some didn't ~
Hmmmmm, you are totally right, no lyrics on the album jackets? I just think it was the record label's blunder ! I would have loved to seen the lyrics for Little Boy Blue, Circles, Egyptian Song etc ......
Very interesting interview. I grew up listening to and enjoying the music of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan & Chaka Khan as a solo artist. Like everyone else I could not wait for the reunion tour, but unfortunately it never happened. How is it that Chaka Khan can tour singing all the highlights that were made when the group was together and will only sing 1 or 2 songs from her solo career ? It's like her emphasis is on singing the groups hits versus singing songs from her solo career or a combination of both. I love me some Chaka Khan ! ! She has amazing songs as a solo artist.
Hmmmm, I also used to wonder why she felt so comfortable touring w Rufus and the opposite when she had her solo band... while rehearsing with those musicians she was always stressed ?? It just felt natural cause we grew up together I guess ... But I'm like you, I want to hear "I feel for you" and "What cha gonna do for me" and of course "I'm every Woman" if I went to her live show !!
Bobby Watson and Tony Maiden are two of my favorite bassists and guitarists. The whole Rufus band was phenomenal. What a sound! Great writing and arranging. Everyone's style was so complimentary and a perfect fit for Chaka.
Bobby I would like to hear your feelings on Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan during the 70s and 80s. And what happen to the documentary that was filmed a few years ago?
Hmmmmm, I remember that with Andre Fischer ! the footage is still around , it just was never put together and released ,, I'd love to see that finished and put out ~
@@myvidworld1 A shame & a pity it appears we wont get to see that doc. Rufus & Chaka were a ground breaking & innovative band and you all dont seem get that credit amongst certain circles.
Hey Bobby, thanks for sharing. Rufus in my opinion was one the most unique and funkiest bands. What you created as a unit is still some of the best music ever and that I have on my playlist today! A quick question would you consider giving bass lessons. Your style is one of my favorites because it was groove-oriented and always in the pocket. I would like to learn how you were able to do that.
@@myvidworld1 Thanks for your response. Just considering it is an honor. I think you’re one of the most underrated bassist which is shocking to me. I know you’re in California so if something were to happen we’d have to do it on video somehow.
OMG!!!! Thank you Bobby for this important insight. You were a major angel along my journey…Sadly, so many of our colleagues (including myself) are suffering the same clash of character flaws and personality types ripping at the core of the art form, and at the end of the day… THE FANS SUFFER.. right along with us ..😢 🎼 😢. Thank you a million times for being so bold to tell these horrible truths that many have held inside for decades. Standing O to you!!! 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾
Yes Penny you do understand cause you lived it too .. I'm glad I was an Angel for you and I am proud of you for sticking and pushing through (Stick & Push) thats my new saying !!!
I circled back to this video because I keep seeing your name turning up in some interesting places. Most recently, I saw your and Tony Maiden’s names in the credits of Ronnie McNeir’s first album on RCA. I’ve been hearing “In the Summertime” quite a bit via Spotify. I looked upthe album to see who was playing on the album, and lo and behold!
Ronnie McNair was a prodigy, I feel lucky to have met him, he wrote his "Butt" off, some great songs and could play and sing like nobody ,, I often wonder about his career and what prevented him from blowing up "Bigger" cause the talent and looks and everything was there Right?
@@myvidworld1 I gotta agree! I was looking at his Soul Train clips and thinking, “This guy looks like MAXWELL (or vice-versa).” The material I’ve heard from him in the 70s is EXCELLENT!
Bobby. I am glad you settled the rumor. I didn't think that was Louis Johnson (RIP) on bass. But I have been dying to know..what were the other two songs you played on that didn't make the album or were they songs that made the album that Q just decided to use Louis over your takes? I'd also like to declare that as far as the 70's went, RUFUS was tops and there were killer bands, but they didn't have Clare Fischer either..he changed the landscape of R&B. I have heard songs that didn't make Ask Rufus, including Clare's orchestral intro, a sketch demo of a song called "Baby" which just blew my mind and "A Burnin Love" which the bridge just killed me! You and Andre's pocket on the bridge was FIRE!!! I would love for a comprehensive Rufus album with demos and alt takes to come to fruition. The world needs it and your fans surely miss the band as a collective!
Hi Kevin, I was told by Bruce Swedien (Engineer) that my bass made some of Michael's tunes too R&B sounding (Funk) , LOL !! If you can believe it, I played on "Off The Wall" (gotta leave that 9 to 5 upon the shelf) and I think Girlfriend?, I also played bass on "Just Once" a James single and got replaced by Greg Philligains Synth Bass ! Bruce told me that "Just Once" with my bass was sounding like a "Barry White" track which was a compliment to me, but Quincy often recorded over 120 tracks on all of his productions during that time, he liked to keep the sound direction with the music on the top of the charts at the time - and no matter how good the tunes felt, he wanted that "Pop" sound that was people were buying at that time !!!! I too would love to hear my bass on the Two Michael Jackson tunes I played on that I got replaced, also "Just Once" the James Ingram track - Claire Fischer was an Alien from Venus, He was not an Earthman !! haha His arrangements just took our Rythym tracks to another Level. I love every song on "Ask Rufus" .. Definitely my favorite Rufus Album , The record company had a fire in one of their warehouses and I think our original tapes were destroyed?? What a cool thing that would be to go and grab that music and do some kind of out-takes CD and release it .. That MCA vault had Rufus Chaka gold in it ~
@@myvidworld1 wow. First off. Thank you for responding. You guys are part of the fabric of my childhood. I'm a 70's baby (from the same year as Rufusized). I would say Ask Rufus was the best album to come out of 77 with your then label mates' "Aja" coming in 2nd. I am a music nerd and fan of Bruce and Q's sonic signature sound. I thought I heard electric bass on "Just Once" as Abe Laboriel is credited on the album. But, I didn't have the fortune of being in those sessions, I was just a little kid then. As far as whatever the fire at MCA destroyed. I know for an absolute fact that some of the "Ask Rufus" reels survived and I know where you may be able to get your ears onto them. I'm sure you'd probably like that. Send me an email and I'll give the info that I have on it My email is kevin.gimmemusic@gmail.com. I would be MORE than happy to try to reconnect you to that stuff. Thanks again for responding, all the great bass work (especially "Destiny") and the lifetime of good memories connected to the music y'all provided to my childhood that I listen to, to this very day.
@@pedraozapsaulo5418 Yes sir ! I also played on "The Lady in my life" which went on to become one of the cuts on the "Thriller" album, also 'Off The Wall" , but my bass was replaced by Louis Johnson on "Off The Wall". Not sure who plays "Lady"?
Well, now I feel stupid for looking for a reunion tour. Sad. So sad. Well I have a lot of PURCHASED downloads lol. I understand the residual situation. Would be great to hear you guys come together. At least the ones who are still able. I definitely see you still can. Did you ever play with the Hawkins at Love Alive?
Man Browngypsy I am sometimes so angry that all of this jealousy and bad understanding has taken over to prevent any kind of re-union of friends that I grew up with from 13 years old.. rode so many buses and planes and done so many gigs in the past just to throw it all away and not even talk on the phone ,,, its like they are giving in to the dark side ~
@@myvidworld1 Yeah man. Super unfortunate for a life long fan as well. I work for an army contractor and had the fortune to meet a young soldier who really enjoys funk and 70's R&B bands. I was proud to introduce him to Rufus and Chaka Khan. Well if you're ever playing with anyone and if I'm available, of course, I'd love to see you play. I'd add my email, but I'm sure you understand my not feeling comfortable posting it in a public forum lol
Watson, never really listened to Rufus...but was steaming & next piece after my requested was "Ain't nobody" wooo hooo Hawk !! Niccceeee...as I started listening... simple line, but nice work on bass...solid...Came looking to see if you had posted, but your nothing since this post. Are you well, the girls, the grandkids...sister rest of family? What kinda music are you working on now? Are even pursuing your art presently? Hope you all are well, praying for you man!!
Interesting info, Bobby. Thanks ! Seems like a familiar story. Often, mixing family into a band's business is not a good idea ! You're one of my favorite bassists and I feel like you don't get your props in that department. You've played with some of my friends in Japan when you were there. Looking forward to checking out more of your vids.
Thanks Leo, I was in Japan for almost 10 years, loved it , and you are so right ,, Family has no business in the business.. there is always a possibility for conflict ~
@@MikeNewland Man, I love that recording, also got to meet Anthony Jackson and Willie Weeks and Carly Simon (cute lady) backstage during that Savoy gig / recording (good memories)
I've always wanted Rufus to get together again with Chaka Khan for a reunion tour one last time. I know everyone have gone their separate ways, to pursued other opportunities in their music careers, and probably doesn't want to revisit the bad experiences from the past. It will a good time to make amends and peace with each other before it's too late. A reunion tour can happen because they were like family. The fans would love it, for sure. Their last studio album: Camouflage, released in 1981 was great.
Hey Bobby! Hope all is well. Question, I was just checking out a Chaka concert called Fool in Love Fest 2024. Was that you on base? You had on black. Just thought I’d ask.
I’ll talk to you!
I’ve ALWAYS LOVED YOU BOBBY!
And ALWAYS WILL🙏♥️
Hey Baby Sister, tell me something CK, how come you look 55 years old still , you are defying age !!!

Awwww man this made my day reading your comment, thank you so much !!
Always interesting to hear the backstory behind some of my favorite bands. Great story telling!
Wow, thank you, all your favorites are my favorites too !
I just stumbled in here but what a cool guy. Great attitude ….forgiveness v. Bitterness. Stay cool brother.
Your bassline in "Rock With You" is stellar!
Bart thank you man ,,,,,,
I like that note he hit in the second verse
Classic!
What about Andre. Thanks for sharing 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾✌🏾💖
Yes, give credit where its due, Andre got both Tony & myself in the Rufus family to begin with ,, I'm grateful and I hope Tony is too !
Bobby thanks for sharing. I really enjoy the story telling
Thanks for updating. Favorite song Smoking room.

Wow take me back to the fun days ,, flying around touring, also thanks for your service Mr. Myron !!!
Im not in the music business but from your experiences I see how things can happen. 70 years old, and still learning, your lesson and attitude has inspired me...fix what you can and let it go. I see why people fight, that ego is the separator ...you showed me to check mine every day...tks!
Well alright, I'm so glad I could inspire a little ~
Bobby, first let me say what a blessing and honor it has been to grow up as a Bass Guitarist who was one of your biggest fans, to become your friend and Band Mate!!! @@myvidworld1 Absolutely Bro! You are truly a Legend and an Inspiration! I feel blessed to call you friend!
I’ll always love and appreciate the incredible and incomparable music Rufus made. *Thank you* for your invaluable contributions to those recordings!
Thank you so much, I'd love a reunion too !!
Mr. Bobby Watson thank you for sharing your story about the group Rufus it was very interesting stay blessed sir 🙏🏾

Did you ever meet Rod Temperton? Masterjam was my favorite Rufus album produced by Quincy and Live in Me and Heaven Bound were my favorite tracks.

Wow.

In short , it’s the perfect recipe for the doldrums and the best thing is to keep it moving and not let it become a a well known conversation you like to have with just random people- lol
Mannn I sure wish we could hang sometimes , probably writing , whether we had planned to do any writing or not lol.
Plus , when you’re new in any big town , a sort of “point” guy/person-(not a whole chaperone) - is a huge blessing.
After a few days of observing how you move about town , that would likely become my model for navigating the culture-in-general as I went about my way.
Great story telling as always and this was the best because audience s want closure too. hahahaha
P.S. I looked for you the other day on the War set
w/ EWF that Verdines wife Shelly filmed on her iPhone but she didn’t get a good close up that time ,plus, she was vibing to War herself -lol
The song “Why can’t we be friends” was being performed in the clip.
P.P.S.Also , I happen to have payed attentions to N8 (East) and Lionel Richies tutorial on how not to piss of Quincy Jones by being too pushy/difficult.
It simply isn’t the reason they call anyone.🤷🏾♂️
Gotta run.
Thanks for your insight Bobby. Great video
Mr Watson.. ( In my Opinion)You are the Driving force behind " Rock With You"
You've had a wonderful career, so glad to see you're doing well!
Also, love your Bass Playing!
Thank you MR. @mobass haha
I was there too. It was an incredible night. You guys were on fire!
Wow! Thanks for the stories. Nice to hear inside info. Thanks
Thank you for sharing about your experiences!! Just checking, you also worked on the project Street Called Desire by Rene and Angela correct?!
Yes, my "play brother" Rene Moore and Angela Winbush came to me and asked me to help them get going ... I didn't know what I was doing, but all 3 of us ended up learning as we went along ~
@@myvidworld1 I love that album and the bass always stands off. Do you offer music lessons or workshops
I’m 21 but a big fan of this band! I’d love to hear more behind the scenes stories from you, uncle Bobby. Tell us about Chaka and everyone
Thank you so much for this comment, I am working on a Rufus Chaka information Video as we speak, Your Uncle Bobby loves storytelling !!!!
Really appreciate these insights and 'the other side' of the various stories that were doing the rounds over the years. Like Lisa Stansfield once said, when you put on a Rufus record, you have to listen to the WHOLE album. Ain't no other way. Thanks so much Mr Watson!
I remember long ago that Prince stated that Tony was one of his favorite guitar players. Thanks for the story Bobby, any new material coming from you.
Hey man really heart broken over Roy's passing... Life can be so unfair... :'(
We lost a genius, what a great imprint he left on the music biz, I'm glad I had the privilege to work with this man ~
Representing gen X, the kids who were breakdancing on the cardboard in the 80's.
@@myvidworld1 *high five*
Truth hurts ... Grew up with Rufusized and your grooves ... been digging on High Voltage lately, too! x
Wow, take me back ms Liz !!!
Tell us how you really feel. Love you Bobby.
Ha hahaha
Sad to hear after all the great music that Tony's wife ruined a lot of things for everyone. I wish you all well though, and thanks for everlasting music!!!!
Thnx Bill, I just push on to the next adventure and try to enjoy every new day as it comes ~
@@myvidworld1 I can tell you're that kind of person! Onwards, and Upwards!!
Thanks for sharing such valued information. I've always been amazed by the work of all Rufus members.
Thanks James, thanks for commenting !!
One of the greatest bass guitar players of all time !! His approach and technique is unparalleled.
What's the name of that Fame song by Rie?
I believe we slightly changed it to "Game"
Bobby, keep in doing what you've been doing (I'm talking about the JAPAN thang) and I'm wishing you the best of luck in continuance. . . !
Thanks Marvin, glad to see your comment man, taking me back to the good old carefree days ~
@@myvidworld1 Maybe when you write YOUR BOOK about that time you'll include ALL THE LYRICS TO ALL THE SONGS!😉😉
WOW
Thanks Bobby for the enlightening. I love All of you guys soo very much. My favorite band of ALL TIME. And of course Chaka will always be my girl❤
Thank you sir, I appreciate the love ~
Y’all were the soundtrack to my college years😊
Yes, Yes, Yes,
Bobby on Masterjam did Quincy allow you guys to choose songs? Heaven Bound was my favorite with Quincy's horns and arrangements.
Actually we could and did submit songs to Q, but he had the final say ~ Yes, Heaven Bound was a nice tune, so different for us ...
Bobby Watson and Tony Maiden are two of my favorite bassists and guitarists. The whole Rufus band was phenomenal. What a sound! Great writing and arranging. Everyone's style was so complimentary and a perfect fit for Chaka.
Oh man, thank you David for this terrific comment ~
@@myvidworld1 Just keeping it a buck!
If he answers yes, you're second in line for lessons lol
Juan man, you just made my day ,, I have not given a bass lesson in 10 years ,,, LOL .. let me think about how I would do it and I'll let you know ~
@@chetperry3384 Man you are funny my brother , I love it >>>
@@myvidworld1 Thanks for your response. Just considering it is an honor. I think you’re one of the most underrated bassist which is shocking to me. I know you’re in California so if something were to happen we’d have to do it on video somehow.
@@myvidworld1 A video series would be the way to go. I would definitely be in line for that!!!
Love the story, Karma runs deep and you are a true inspiration to all.
Well said, I do not mess with that bad Karma stuff and thnx for the inspiration comment
Great GREAT video
@@myvidworld1 Did you play bass on other songs that didn't make it onto Michael Jackson's Off the Wall album? If yes, which ones?
It'd be cool to go see kinfolk play.

Oh God Bless !!!
Bobby, Rufus needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.....
Agreed Brother Kevin ... its all politics !!!!

Wasn't your old drummer Andre something...whatever happened to him? Loved your playing with Rufus btw...always funky!
Andre is in Minn. enjoying being a dad and granddad !! I miss his relaxed groove on the drums ,, The Man !!!!
Was not me, I have been here cooking and swimming all year, no tours w Chaka !!! I miss the music though ~
Hey man! I was just hoping it was you. I think it was neat what she said below.
