  • English tenor Alfie Boe sang the national anthem at Yankee Stadium on May 8, 2012 prior to a Tampa Bay Rays-New York Yankees game. And he nailed it!

    It is ironic to have an English artist sing the American National Anthem and them show the statue of Liberty given to us by the French. The fact that Alfie played Val Jean in Les Mis also makes the irony more significant. Great performance and great voice. Thank you Alfie for singing our national anthem. You are one talented man.

    That, my friends, is the way the National Anthem should be sang.

    No one- no no no- one, can sing like Alfie Boe. Singing this song with our flag as background at times, makes him a man with a God given voice and he sings for all peoples. That's called love for all of us no matter who or where.

    That's so amazing to have one of the best singers alive today, who is British and an amazing rising star, sing a song that was originally a British song, but then matched with lyrics by an American, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. "Defence of Fort McHenry"
    Our national anthem. Wow.

    He is a great talent and a powerful voice. I have listened to several of his anthems and in one he said Hail and not hailed and the other was for the land and no OR the land. It goes to show you how difficult it is to get every little thing perfect when standing in front of thousands of people with no background. I have to sing at Fenway Park in Boston Next week and I will find out how tough it is to perform for my first major event. You also have the delay to contend with.

    That type of singing actually takes talent and training, unlike pop stars.

  • @hecate235
    @hecate235 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    But this isn't a "style of singing," if that were true, anyone would be able to switch back and forth between this and other "styles." Yeah, he's had training, but he just naturally has lots of resonance and a really beautiful top. When Alfie hits those high notes, there's no strain or screeching.
    He does sing all kinds of music And not in "opera mode," either. One of the best singers, voices, artists, in decades. He's huge in the UK, hope he makes it here.

      I don't know of a single singer who *hasn't* done 'banner' over four notes. O_o

    • @Ihdc1
      @Ihdc1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miaren Crowsdaughter Renee Fleming, Robert Merrill (the definitive version IMO), a number of opera singers (probably because they can read music), and even Whitney Houston (though she adds stuff in other places). And if you look at the sheet music, "banner" is 3 notes, not 4. Everyone who sings it as 4 notes is doing it wrong (even some tutorials teach it wrong)

    • @spgtenor
      @spgtenor 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's sung both ways, but yes, the score is 3 notes. The important thing is for the anthem to be sung and recognized as the song written, and done with respect, which is almost never done. Alfie is amazing.

  • @Ggamer509
    @Ggamer509 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What? Operatic style is one of the best and hardest forms of singing. The auto-tuned pop you're probably used to hearing is not good or hard. Pop singers take the easiest route using the easiest vowels, taking in no account for intonation, vibrato, breath support, etc.

  • @purbass
    @purbass 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ironic because of the complicated nature of the relationship between England and America. There is too much history for me to simplify the irony to youtube comment length. If anyone disagrees, I welcome them to ignore my comment :) Ironic or not, Alfie is great.
