    Southgate trained his Euro 21 team on how take penalties like him.

    Matches between England and Germany are always classics.

      And England usually lose of course, hence Gary Lineker's famous line "Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win." I'm not sure exactly when he said it, but I think it was after this game when it ended 1-1, like the 1990 semi-final, and England lost on penalties again.

    It was the same match-up as the 1990 World Cup semi-final, with Germany once again winning on penalties.

      I believe it was after this game that Gary Lineker, veteran of the 1990 game, made his famous quote "Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, the Germans always win". This is quoted on Lineker's German Wikipedia page.

    I saw this game recently all of it, 28 years on I feel England were unlucky not to win, however
    Germany are a very good team and battled hard to win this game on PK's.
    It's kind of amazing that Germany have not won the EUROS since 1996, however they host
    it in 12 days time so they & England will have a good chance of winning this tournament.

      Actually, Germany have arguably rather underperformed since reunification in 1991 compared to the old West Germany, with only two tournament wins (at Euro 96 and the 2014 World Cup). They had disappointing exits from the '94 and '98 World Cups to teams they were expected to beat, were dreadful at Euro 2000, finishing bottom of their group, and had group stage exits at the two most recent World Cups. At least this year they gave a more creditable performance and were only defeated by the best team of the tournament who won every one of their games.

    Shearer was a beast!

    • @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz
      @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Although he scored in the third minute, he had a pretty frustrating game after that and never really came close to scoring. The Germans looked after him really well and seemed to force him out wide a lot, which was why the best chances to score came to Anderton, who hit the post, and Gazza from that Shearer cross.

      Gazza played surprisingly well at Euro 96 given that he'd had bad injuries and was not really that fit. He was famously dropped by Glenn Hoddle before the '98 World Cup due to his lack of fitness, meaning that Euro 96 turned out to be his second and last tournament with England.

    MartinTyler was asked to make this after the event I'm sure. He didn't tend to commentate on his own, back then it would’ve been with Andy Gray and I also think that even what he was saying was scripted by someone else as it often was of a lower standard to his level.
    "Great start from the home team" you wouldn't usually say when your own nation England have just taken the lead even as a commentator who doesn't want to sound completely biased you wouldn't say home team like it can be anyone at least say something like England have scored. Besides England were actually the away team in this game hence the away kit it was Germany vs England and I think Tyler would’ve chosen to word it correctly I know it was at Wembley which made England "the hosts" so he would've said the hosts if he didn't just say England or "us" like many commentators do including the real live BBC commentator for Euro96 Barry Davies.
    Also when Germany equalised, "Germany have got a goal back" Tyler wouldn't say that if it was an equaliser you say that when a team who were losing by more than 1 score. Definitely scripted from someone else and after the event there wasn't much passion in his commentary like he would have in a live game.

    Steve Mcmanaman doesnt want shoot penalty...

    • @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz
      @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's a very good article online called "Redemption Song? Gareth Southgate, semi-finals and football coming home", which explains what happened. Bryan Robson was assistant coach and practised penalties with just five of the players. They were obviously working on the assumption that five successful penalties would win a shootout, which in most cases it would. They hadn't reckoned on how good the Germans would be, so once it went to 5-5, England had run out of penalty takers. McManaman, Anderton, Ince and Adams didn't want to take the sixth penalty, so it was left to Southgate.

      @@MatthewMaloney-fj4zz Kinsman was a good player, yes. But certainly not as good as Shearer and I don't think he would have dislodged Sheringham either. So, it wasn't as bad as the comment above suggests that those two were missing. Klinsman a fairly big miss but Bobic!?

    • @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz
      @MatthewMaloney-fj4zz 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@christopherpenny6083 Got a lot of time for Shearer and Sheringham, but sorry, Klinsmann achieved a lot more at international level than either of them - you had to be good to be a mainstay of Germany teams in the way he was in those days because they had quality all over the pitch and regularly got to finals and semi-finals, which England didn't. Let's face it, England were woeful in the years leading up to Euro 96 - going out in the group stage of Euro 92 and failing to even qualify for the '94 World Cup. They automatically qualified for Euro 96 as hosts but weren't very good in most of the games and were totally outplayed by Spain in the quarterfinal, which they only got through because Spain had a legitimate goal disallowed. Also worth remembering that although Shearer was the most prolific striker in the Premier League, he had gone through a long goal drought for England prior to Euro 96 and there were a lot of questions about whether he was ever going to perform at international level, but Venables stayed loyal to him. Klinsmann, by contrast, was a proven international standard player over many years, not least because he was part of the great West Germany team that had won the 1990 World Cup. At Euro 96 he also became the first player to score in three consecutive European Championships. So at international level, given a choice between Shearer and Klinsmann, I would choose Klinsmann. I don't even think Shearer had a good game against Germany - yes, he scored in the third minute from a corner, but after that he barely got a sniff of the goal - the Germans looked after him really well. It said it all that the best chances to score came to Anderton, who hit the post, and Gazza from a Shearer cross from a wide area. Shearer wasn't in the positions he needed to be in to score.
