they don't like them maybe cause they are too personal, and I guess some people just like the idea of Lana putting metaphor on dark things with poppy rythmed sounds. I love blue banisters it's like reading her secret journal

Honestly, I love Lana, but Chemtrails is my least favorite album. I'm sure the meanings are deep, but the music itself isn't very "listenable" like her other work. It's very poetic, I just personally don't like the inconsistent rhythms and lack of rhyme scheme in some songs where it seems like she's kinda talking. The songs also aren't very different from each other.

    • @caps07

@@RohanBlum I understand what u are saying but her music has never been listenable since day 1. All her albums need to spend time with. I can't say it's my favorite of hers but it has so many good songs. And I still can't get over dark but just a game and the bridge in dance till we die

You absolutely nailed the theme of this album in this statement:
“And now in Chemtrails Over The Country Club it seems like she finally realized if she just doesn’t put any expectations on herself, doesn’t let others do it, just does it for herself or for someone she loves, or for no reason at all… that’s where she finds happiness.”

  • @marciovelho747

this album was a epivetal moment in her career and for herself I think. After this, we started to see less and less of Lana Del Rey and so much more of Elizabeth Grant. Her next two albuns are her most vulnerable and brutally honest ones, thats why chemtrails feels so breeze and minimalistic, it really feels like a state of self-reflection incapsulated in time. Loving your reactions, youre so great at analyzing lyrics ❤

Tulsa Jesus Freak was originally called White Hot Forever which was supposed to be the album title. After she found out the man who the song was about was cheating on her she changed the song and album title. She also talks about that man in A&W on Ocean Blvd.

She recently changed the lyrics of Chemtrails while performing live to “He’s born in December and he got married when we were still together,” she sang. “Sometimes I wonder what his wife would think if she knew that I didn’t know anything/ He’s born in December and I’m born in June/ He’s born in December and he got married while we were in couple’s therapy together.”

Even wilder than that actually! (haha get it I'm so funny) The melody of the pre chorus is almost identical to the chorus of "love song", the instrumental of the chorus is the same as the bridge of "how to disappear", and the melody of the chorus is almost the same as the melody from the verses of "hope is a dangerous thing...". It's almost like a medley of NFR and I love it.

  • @wiigotaproblem
    @wiigotaproblem 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

In "Breaking up Slowly" when she says, "I don't wanna end up like Tammy Wynette", it could also be referencing an incident from 1978 where Tammy claimed she was kidnapped outside of a department store in Nashville, TN and driven 80 miles away before they let her go. She suffered a broken cheek bone and some other minor injuries in the attack. However, after she passed away, her kids claimed the kidnapping was staged to cover up a domestic violence incident with her husband George, because she was too embarrassed to publicly be known as a DV victim when her most famous song was "Stand by Your Man", a song about staying with your man no matter what he does.

My favourite song at first listening was also Dark But Just A Game. This album had the bad luck to came after NFR. I think Lana knew that people would compare the next album to NFR so she decided to keep it simple. I love it so much because it was released when the pandemic was still on and it was very relaxing to hear, specially title track has something very chill about it. Blue Banisters has also a very "pandemic" sound to me, she mentions it in the lyrics. I loved your reaction!! ❤

This might be her most "unique" album, not only in concept, but musically. It's so streamlined yet so diverse. I'll die on the hill that it's one of her best bodies of work. Also, to go along with your commentary on "White Dress," I'm not sure how much you know of her story with relation to the media, but she definitely has no love for how she's been treated over the years, beginning with when she was drug through the mud at the time of Born to Die's release. She still has to justify herself and her story to this day because of all the bullshit rumors and gossip she has to hear about herself. It's honestly very sad. That woman has nerves of steel.

Please, Lana fans, correct me if I'm wrong, but I want to add context to why she went from a grandiose album (NFR, and my fave Lana album btw) to a very chill album as you said (Chemtrails):
Yes, you are correct. Lana received a lot of acclaim from critics and fans alike for NFR and for the first time in her career I feel like she was finally understood, or so she thought. While she was riding the highest wave of her career, during that time she was also cancelled by many as well because of some controversies online (won't get into that), she broke up with a guy I feel like she thought was the one (the Tulsa Jesus Freak because he lives in Tulsa), and then the pandemic hit, so all in all I feel like the NFR era ended up pretty badly for her. She went from the TOP to the literal PITS. I also feel like during this time she kind of took a step back from being out there (she even closed her original Instagram account) and grew closer to her family and female friends. I feel like Chemtrails is the start of a Lana who isn't that crazy chick anymore, I don't think she's actually being sarcastic in Chemtrails, she actually is enjoying the simpler life and simple things and being a simple person. And you will continue to hear more of that Lana in her next two projects. I mean, Ocean Blvd was even dedicated to her family, or so she said.
    Hope that clarifies!

    Just some background:
Tammy Wynette and George Jones (referenced on the lawn), had a very abusive but infamous relationship for many years. Tammy was considered the First Lady of Country Music. He was actually arrested for being drunk and riding his lawn mower to the bar and (rumored) to have shot at Tammy.
It is also believed that her husband, George Richie (not the same one), fed her pills and killed her to gain her fortune. She had many surgeries through the years and died very young.
She is a country music legend and one of my favorites.
Listen to “Stand By Your Man”. One of the most iconic songs of all time.

YES I love that she ends the album on someone else's voice. Something about some of my favorite artists (Lana, Beyonce) is that they always highlight others and are willing to share the spotlight. Earnest collaboration is so important in the dark game she's in. Also in regards to the line about “no rose left on the vine”, obviously it could be a very literal metaphor, but I saw someone say before (long time back) that it could also allude to Hollywood in that Vine is an iconic street there. Its intersection with Hollywood Blvd is a known symbol of Hollywood itself. So the line essentially could be saying there is nothing good, pretty or pure left in Hollywood, just the vine which is bare and sharp/ dangerous.

    OKAY!
    Thought:
"Keep that bottle at your hand my man,
Find your way back to my bed again". - This couplet is Lana telling her boo what his options are; he can't hold on to her AND the alcohol.
"Trade this body for that can of gin" - is Lana trying to convince her man to choose her over the liquor.
Truth: I never fully pondered the meaning of Tulsa Jesus Freak, but I know the song by heart and it's actually one of my favorites on this album because of its sound, but I now after listening to it, this is what I think!

I really enjoyed your video. I think Chemtrails over the Country Club might be my favorite album by her and I just felt like we're having a face to face conversation. You also pointed out things I didn't notice.

Tulsa Jesus Freak and White Dress are my favorite from this album. Dark But Just A Game grew on me.
Blue Bannisters (the song) is one of my favorite songs by Lana, I hope you like the story it tells. I am dyyying for your reaction to Ocean Boulevard as a whole, but specifically A&W.
Also, even though you'll be done with albums soon, don't forget allll the music videos. If I remember right, you said you're not necessarily a huge music video reactioner, BUT. Most of Lana's have so much symbolism and tell such a beautiful story.
Chemtrails gets a whole new meaning.
    Ride makes me cry.
Young and Beautiful (the music video version with the orchestra behind it) is stunning.
    You NEED to watch Tropico.
There's still so much Lana content waiting for you!

COTCC was a bit of a grower for me too, but I personally loved blue banisters from the first time I ever listened to it. That one and ocean boulevard are a bit more heavy in its lyrics so be prepared, I had to take breaks the first time

One of her best albums, both lyrically and sonically. Sounds like an album someone like Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell or Fiona Apple would've released, it just has that singer-songwriter quality to it. A true modern masterpiece

    Interesting facts
1.. Chemtrails was released during a very tough time for Lana, there were controversies around her statements, racist allegations, fat shaming for gaining weight, Trump supporter allegations, horrible breakup with a man she really cared about, took him to grammys with her. On top of that all this during lockdown, not much distractions available. That's why this album was not promoted much, Lana was not in that state of mind to promote and given the album talks about hardships of fame, it would have been hypocritical to promote this album too much.
    2. There is an internal fandom joke that Lana is a wanna be indie girl, she hates being mainstream even though she has mainstream success.. that's why when NFR became successful, she followed it up with a low-key record without promotions. She knew Chemtrails would face the burder of being NFR follower, so she decided to keep it simpler.
    3. Chemtrails was the representation of her mindset after horrible breakup and circumstances. Blue Banisters reflects to the time when she started getting back to normal and in control.
    4. Lana's iPhones are hilarious, she still uses an iPhone 6 and her iphones are always cracked, not just screen, even back covers. Just google Lana del rey cracked iphones. Fans make jokes like "Our poor queen", "stream her album so she can buy new phone"
    5. Lana was called queen of PicsArt during Chemtrails and blue Banisters era, because of her self made album and single covers. Even PicsArt Twitter handle used this to promote their app.

Let Me Love You Like A Woman is a remake of Pink Champaign which is unreleased song that leaked some time ago, and that one is very dark as Lana wrote it in her biggest world tour which was not what she expected and her boyfriend (Barrie-James O'Neill) at that moment was in a depression. Black Beauty is also about him.

Day One of asking, and a bit unrelated to Lana but I feel like you would love Holly Macve. She's like an underground version of Lana and its so good. Her music is a mix of Lana Del Rey and Taylor with a bit of country vibes. So far she has two albums with OFFENSIVE melodies in both (especially her sophomore album) and an EP coming in February!! I think you would love her, especially since you love to decipher lyrics. She's very deep and unfortunately underrated. It would be AMAZING if you checked her out!!!

I always thought Chemtrails (the song) was a nod to the book, The Women Who Run With the Wolves. She posted the book on her stories during the pandemic and the music video has wolves in it. So it's about being a "housewife" and following the expectations of being a woman (a housewife, a mom, etc) but having that wolf inside (as all women do). Read the book...you'll get it!

I think it would be cool if Cass reacted to Lana's discography back from 2010 (yes, I do mean Lana del Ray A.K.A Lizzy Grant) it would be such a cool way to close out the Lana discog dive and I would absolutely love someone to analyse the lyrics from A.K.A as well as Cass does.

  • @tshypooooo
    @tshypooooo 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hey Cass, I highly recommend reacting to Preachers Daughter by Ethel Cain when you’re up to date with Lana!
Her lyricism is insane and Preachers Daughter is one of the best albums of the decade thus far imo. Definitely read into the context of the album first and pay extra attention to the lyrics.
If you like Lana and her story telling then I think you’ll really enjoy Hayden’s (aka Ethel’s) story telling abilities. She’s insanely talented and her voice is beautiful.
