You will be happy to listen to honeymoon next because it is so much more airy and not dark like ultraviolence. It's very much like an old movie with the violins and it's quite different from the other two albums. Will be a good album to listen to after so many dark albums. Then you get lust for Life which is one of her more pop albums but it is not considered her best work oddly while it's actually really good. I think you'll like it and then you will eventually hit Norman Rockwell the best album of all artists of all time so buckle up
Oh and after you get chemtrails in blue banisters. I'm not the biggest fan of those two and they're a bit disorganized and don't really have a cohesiveness like every other album but I do recommend listening to them they have good songs but the entire body of work is not very cohesive in my opinion. But the newest album that just came out is absolutely amazing. But without listening to lanas other music and knowing context the album is really not a great thing to listen to right away. I would never recommend that album for someone who's never heard Lana before because it is so dependent on knowing her past work. She also talks about a lot of music that only mega fans would know about tiny little things and the people she knows close to her in real life and all these little tiny things. But you'll love that album and I'm excited for Norman Rockwell

Oh by the way, money power Glory is a criticism of the media who has been criticizing her. She was saying that the media wouldn't stop saying she's only about money and power. So she said you know what I'm going to write a song and give them what they want and she decided to use that as the title. But she's not actually wanting money power Glory.
Sad girl apparently is also feeding into the stereotype or what media refers to her as so she decided to say you know what I am a sad girl I'm going to give them what they want as well. And mistress just means side hoe, unpaid. Often times in a cheating context. She's basically saying that she's miserable because she's just a mistress and it makes her sad but can't leave him because she loves him too much so she just suffers alone
Sad girl is my fav on the album
And the fast spot you are looking for is the song Florida kilos from the bonus tracks.
Fucked my way up to the top is a diss track against the Lorde.

      @sparkleclover ปีที่แล้ว +26

BTD is having fun with your married sugar daddy but secretly starting to feel sad about it. UV is when the relationship turns abusive and you start making excuses and stay anyways bc you're stubbornly "in love", and honeymoon is when the relationship is over and maybe you're with a new guy and you should be happy but instead you're actually more deeply depressed than ever and missing your abuser and romanticizing the past and the "honeymoon period" of the relationship. just my interpretation.

Well, in my case, I loved it for a few months and I still love a few songs (The Blackest Day and Art Deco are some of my favorites from her discography), but the album wears off. It's just not a good time once you've listened to it a lot, imo. It isn't a grower, it's an "ok, some songs are nice" album and then instead of becoming better and better it just gets boring. It's also very dated (Lust for Life is even worse in this regard). Those albums don't engage me when even Blue Banisters and Chemtrails do, it's as simple as that.

Love your reactions so much! You're totally right about Fucked my way up to the Top - it's satirical, about how she was perceived. She wasn't taken seriously as an artist and a lot of people assumed she only got where she was by sleeping her way up to the top, which isn't true because she literally worked her ass off for like 8 years singing in New York clubs before she got signed. There's a pretty infamous quote from her saying "I've slept with a lot of guys in the industry, but none of them helped me get my career. Which is annoying." Which is a typical Lana quote lol - she can be very wry and funny sometimes. She's been chronically misunderstood and unfairly labelled by critics throughout her whole career and is only now starting to get the true critical recognition and appreciation she's deserved from the start. And no, she's never won a Grammy (travesty!) but has been nominated and robbed of Album of the Year several times! It's looking like she may finally get AOTY for her latest record (and absolutely should), but she's deserved it so many times.

    yessss we’ve been anticipating
ETA it’s worth keeping in mind the context in which this album was released. BTD and lana were heavily trashed by critics at the time of her debut, and her response was to double down on a lot of the things she was criticized for. she was criticized for romanticizing toxic relationships - makes ultraviolence. was criticized for being shallow and chasing fads - makes brooklyn baby. was criticized for the sadness and melodrama in her music - makes sad girl and pretty when you cry. i’ll always respect that lana stuck to her guns and made a record that was so sonically captivating the critics had no choice but to re-evaluate her merits as a musical artist. it’s really only in the past few years that she’s begun to be taken seriously on the level she deserves, in my opinion.
also hotel california is one of her fave songs, i’m sure she’d be delighted that you mentioned it here lol

Little bit of a backstory for a couple songs
Ultraviolence song is supposed to describe her relationship she had with alcoholism when she was a teen. She was talking about Jim beam alcohol. But the name Jim is also a nod to a cult leader named Jim jones.
Pretty when you cry was done in one take and freestyled.
F***ed my way up to the top was kind of a diss track to critica and singer Lorde because many critics said she used her relationships to go up
In the industry and because Lorde criticized her music and artistry then pretty much copied her sound/ aesthetic. So in that song she’s pretty much sayin yeah I did f*** my way to the top and she takes a jab at Lorde by saying “mimicking me is a fucking bore”

It's strange, I remember Ultraviolence (the titular track especially) was initially criticised for "romanticising domestic violence". Personally, I never felt that. Having lived with DV, I always thought it was a pretty profound song that captured the essence of being in love with someone who's mistreating you.
Anyway, that's my oversharing on the Internet done for today. Thanks for the great vid Cass. I've never watched an album react before, but this was top shelf stuff. Stay brilliant ❤

Great reaction as always! Love your interpretations.
Lots of different theories about Ultraviolence out there, but Lana has never talked about its meaning and has stopped singing it live, so I guess we'll never know.
Pretty When You Cry was actually free-styled with Lana and her guitarist just bouncing off of each other! Makes it so much tougher to listen to. I don't interpret it as her romanticising her own sadness, but think it more means that her partner liked her when she was upset (particularly because of the "you" in the title.
Money Power Glory and Fucked My Way Up To The Top is actually her being sarcastic - she was receiving a lot of criticism at the time and these were part of her response
Also devo you didn't love Money Power Glory, but I felt the exact same way and later realised how stunning it is - hopefully a few listens later it'll hit!

-for the bonus tracks those are the official ones, but id love to see you do 'your girl' with it too, technically its an unreleased but its SO GOOD and was meant to be on the album, lanas has said multiple times she loves the song and wishes she had put it on
-the young and beautiful mv isnt the most exciting but it is gorgeous i think youd love it
-dw abt not listening to the whole song for cruel world lol i love it but always end it after the second chorus sorry not sorry
-im sorry to say that there is sadder songs than ultraviolence. Wait until you get to kintsugi and fingertips. I'm not a crier and i cried a fucking river
-pretty when you cry is called that because thats what he said to her and that's why she says im pretty when i cry, he likes seeing her sad. PWYC and sad girl are my favourite songs from ultraviolence lol
-yes fmwttt is about what people say about her, its believed to be aimed at lorde. She also got a lot of hate for the topics she sings about so some people think 'go baby go' is her talking about other female artists, shes saying shes cleared a path for other female singers to be more free with what they sing about and shes telling them to do it
-'old money' is kinda reference to her family who are old money. (she abandoned their money to live by herself in a trailer park in her late teens/early 20s) its also very interesting she talks about her fathers love but mothers glamour, in her later albums she gets more personal and talks about her mothers narcissist tendencies and lack of care for her

@@Cherryberryfruitt I totally agree, PWYC i love the high notes and the fragile of her voice like i do feel all the sadness of that statement is almost like she is begging him to stay, I love the sonically it is so dreamy, sweet and also heavy it sounds simple but complex but what i love the most it is the simplicity i love the bridge it is so vulnerable and heartbreaking i love/hate how relatable is with my life. This song for me is one of my favourite Lana's song and I feel weird when people don't see the beauty of this song.

Great reaction as always, I haven't finished yet but your comment about wanting a upbeat song caught my attention. Lana has a few songs like that, but they're very different from others singer's. She's usually on the slower side and when she's not, she's gonna play a little more with the instrumentals and production. I personally would recommend not expect "upbeat" on every album, but enjoy the ride and if it happens, it happens. Her earlier albums have a heavier sound and production, so if you like that sound you'll probably enjoy them more than her recent works, which also have an amazing production, but I think it's worth listening to everything, especially because she's an excellent songwriter and she gets better at every release!

i don’t think i’ve seen anyone comment this yet but, Lana does come from old money she was born and raised in manhattan before she was sent off to very wealthy parents. Cruel World, Pretty When You Cry and Money Power Glory are crazy and chaotic, it really engulfs you into a world somewhere else. Shades Of Cool shows off her vocal range like never before and has 007 theme song vibes. Old Money is something from a gothic black and white fairytale film, Ultraviolence is not just an album it's an experience. I LOVE Flipside! The guitars are infectious. This Happiness and Black Beauty also amazing. the deep voice at the end of Brooklyn Baby is her ex Barrie-James O'Neill.

Old Money is absolutely a retrospective song, looking back on times, details, and people (or lover) fondly, while also yearning for those moments with them again. I feel like it also describes a lifestyle that may seem full, lavish even, but ultimately never was fulfilling for her. She mentions her father's love was strong, but her mother more so being known for her glamour, which I interpret as her relationship with her mother was not held in the same regard as her father. She may have come front an affluent upbringing, but her life was not as ideal behind the picture-perfect, "old money", picture-perfect imagery she's describing. Whoever that person is, be it her father, or possible love interest, she would go back and do it all again with them (past or present). Definitely a song I cried to upon first listen, ESPECIALLY in the bridge and post-chorus -- the pain just seeps through those notes. So ffffucking emotive, that Lana.

I dont know if someones already commented this but Jim is likely a reference to Jim Beam, a brand of bourbon whiskey. Keeping this in mind a lot of this album takes on the double meaning of an abusive relationship and Lanas relationship with alcohol. Lana also mentioned that she was a part of an underground sect in an interview with ‘CultNoise’ and said Jim referred to the head of this sect. This is made more clear by a couple of scrapped songs from the album like Cult Leader.

  • @isoobelly
    @isoobelly ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jim, Jimmy or J is a made up love interest that reappears throughout Lana's discography, and most prominently in AKA Lizzy Grant (when she lived in New York, so maybe that's where the lyric in UV came from?) She still uses him as her love interest, kind of like a code word, most recently in A&W from her newest album. Hope that helped 💕

about F*cked My Way To The Top:
The entire song is directed at the public, yes. 'Cause when she first debuted, people were saying she's an industry plant. This song explains how she isn't but did try to get ahead by having sex with a lot of people in the industry. Even in an interview, she literally said: "I fucked a lot of guys in the industry, but i never got anything from them, which is annoying". I found that quote of hers really funny
The second verse is also directed at Lorde, who was saying that Lana was a really bad influence on younger audiences.

I love how much time you take to absorb the songs and pay attention to them and to articulate your thoughts! A lot of the ones you didn’t like as much are big favourites of mine. I’m eager to see how the album grows on you as I do think it could be harder to adjust to some of it especially after coming from Born to Die - I think this project really showed her seriousness as a musician and album artist, deviating away from what may have been expected or pressured to do after the Summertime Sadness success and leaning even more into an alternative image/sound.
For me, Old Money is my favourite, particularly because of relating to it in my own way. The album came out at a hard time and I too was posing the questions to myself of “where did I go wrong” and “how did things take such a turn?” and the lines about her feeling alone, not understanding why and contemplating about lost youth really resonated. I also feel like so much meaning in that song is felt in its sonic qualities and emotions conveyed.
Honeymoon is my favourite album as it has a sonic world that is very well thought-out and cohesive while also having differing songs and moments. Im looking forward to seeing how you react to it! ❤️
