    There has been so much confusion and speculation online about the difference between Japanese bits and other bits but you've just summed it up nicely in a few minutes.
    Even your demonstration of the different impact settings was the most well explained I've seen out there.

They also made every single component in their drills and drivers. My old 12v version will drive a 3 inch screw into wood and snap the head off. That's all the power I ever needed. Tip for those who don't want to use any of the alternatives tools provided in this video for keeping bits in your impact collet of the 172.
    You don't have to take the collet apart to put the retention ball back in place, you can just pull the collet like you're gonna take the bit out, hold it, you'll see a black ring under, If you just slide that ring around with a small screwdriver it'll pop the ball back into place

  • @clutteredchicagogarage2720

    That looks like an incredible impact driver. I may buy it one of these days.
    I'm in the USA. I use Makita 18V tools, but I also have some Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools and batteries. My favorite impact driver is actually the little Milwaukee M12 surge because it's an oil-drive impact. It's quite small, and it's significantly quieter than any other impact driver I've ever used. I rarely need more torque than I can get from my Milwaukee M12 surge impact, and it's just nicer to use a small quiet tool with low vibration. I'll be excited if Makita can put all of these same features into an 18V oil-drive impact. My favorite drill is my Makita 18V subcompact, and I have 2 18V Makita circular saws (one blade-right and one blade-left) that are the best circular saws I've ever used.
    This 18V Makita impact driver seems to me to be the most-refined and most-ergonomic non-oil-drive impact I've ever seen. I just prefer oil-drive impacts.

    • @jonaspedersen103
      @jonaspedersen103 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makita does have an oil-impulse 18v driver. In the states it’s the XST01Z. You can also get an all black if you import it from Japan (ts141).

    • @clutteredchicagogarage2720
      @clutteredchicagogarage2720 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jonaspedersen103 Yes, I know. However, I don't think they have one that has a ring LED light, controls at the rear of the grip, and a grip that balances the weight of the battery closer to the center of the grip. The ergonomics of this new TD173D seem excellent. If Makita release a new version of their oil impulse with updated lighting and ergonomics, I would probably get it.

    @khuongathebounga4141 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Thanks for the review. You’re definitely right with it being the best Makita impact driver so far and I’m not even on the Makita platform but this impact driver has all the features that I could ever want. Especially the ring lights and selection panel on the back. By the way with the Bosch Freak impacts I also found that standard bits are a little too short due to the way they have to accommodate the impact sockets and impact bits. It was a little annoying at first but you do get used to it once you buy longer bits.

      @khuongathebounga4141 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@codustv1465 Yeah I’m 100% with you on that. I don’t care if an impact driver can sink huge lag bolts 3 seconds faster. The functionality, weight and comfort are way more important when your sinking screws all day.

  • @cavedog1279
    @cavedog1279 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just got one of these in the mail. Take a piece of 5.5mm thick EPDM rubber and place a 1/4" drive hex bit on it standing upright. Trace the profile of the hex through the rubber with a knife. Use a hex bit to press the rubber into the chuck and it will now function only with international or USA hex bits, and the rubber will not fall out like the Makita adapter does. If you want to remove it, a simple pick usually works. I suggest testing the fit before shoving it all the way in.

    • @MatSmithLondon
      @MatSmithLondon 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does this not prevent the transfer of lateral force, which is key to the efficiency of an impact driver? The point of hammer action is that between each hammer, lateral force allows the bit to become fully reseated into the screw head before hammering again, preventing cam-out.
      Makita recommended metal adapter transfers this force directly as it’s made of steel. But EPDM introduces elasticity.
      Maybe it’s fine, maybe not. I’d like to know before doing this though. Once it’s in, it won’t come out again…

    I wish Hikoki had thought of putting the control panel on the rear instead of moving it to the front because people didn't like something different. I do like it on the side but on the back is even better, well done Makita for thinking outside the box.
    Plus all battery check lights should be on the rear as well!?

    There's a channel or 2 on TH-cam that bashes Makita and I never understood why. I don't own any Makita tools but if I were to switch brands Makita is likely where I'd go.

  • @KeterMalkuth

    I'm currently invested in Dewalt and I like the power their tools provide. That said, I think it's hard to argue with the ergonomics and design of Makita tools. They don't necessarily design their tools for an impressive spec sheet, but their benefits are more qualitative than quantitative, and especially for things like an impact driver, you don't necessarily want it to have as much ugga dooga as an impact wrench. Even the average impact driver can already snap bits with regularity when using it for more things like driving or wrenching on metal.

    Very tempting. How does it compare in terms of power to the Milwaukee gen 2 impact driver. The power out of the gen 2 impact is just amazing, in fact I bought myself a second one and took the collet out and replaced it with a 1/2 square drive. And it out performs Milwaukees own dedicated 1/2 mid size impact wrench. Oviouslly the Makita is far more refined. But it would be interesting to see the power difference between the 2. As the gen 2 impact is currently the most powerful impact money can buy.

  • @AndyChipling

    Looks wonderful bit of kit and the controls look like they could be good when you have remembered what they do. I normally work by feel and experience with my old impact.
    However one thing is a small concern: -
    I would be a bit worried if one put it on lock mode and in the tool bag the light was turned on without knowing.
    Love the idea re the torch, yet is it going to fall down in one's tool bag?
    Thi killer for me is the bits being different.
    I will have to hope that Makita import this impact driver with a UK/US bit holder.
