- Last week I participated in my first Game Boy Art Jam over on itch; special thanks to Phil (aka ‘Bad Dad’) for inviting me to take part! In this video I’ll share my workflow and the technical restraints necessary in order to create a piece of Game Boy artwork compatible with real hardware!

Your image turned out incredibly detailed. I like that you used a sprite-approach although you were limited to tiles rather than sprites. I also like that we can see the influences of your previous studies in tile-based artworks, like the teletext stuff, and the practice you have with limited color palettes. It all came together really nicely!
Thanks for noticing! That was exactly the line of thought; to have everything organized as if they were in fact sprite assets - all that's left to do would be to isolate those things and add some animation 🤔✨
Had a fun time doing some pixel art for this jam. Glad you could join in on it too
I recently released a short narrative game with GB Studio, "The Ocean, Like Time", and I found the Gameboy style to be so charming! It was so fun to work within its limits and make hardware-accurate pixel art! I found the limits usually pushed me to make better art. The only limitation I didn't like was how hard it was to make background images animated!
Many thanks for participating, and thanks for a great video of the process.
Thanks again for letting me know about it, really fun idea and looking forward to seeing the final gallery! :D
Thank you for suggesting this jam, I had a great time sharing my art with other creators!
its always fun to see how you work around limitations to end up with a unique (and always cute) piece of art
Glad you joined us in the jam. 🤘
Thx for making me aware of this jam, it was fun to make art for it!
Really interesting set of limitations! Well done!
Thanks! Yeah it was fun to actually have a reason to adhere tightly to these restrictions; previously I've only ever made things that looked like the style without needing to really be that strict otherwise
wah this is such a fun project! yours turn out really good!
Thank you! Yeah really fun to put together, somehow feels even more 'pixel arty' to have to also be restricted with tiles etc, kind of a neat challenge! :D
The pirate cat is such a fun character design!
This video makes me feel inspired to try some of these jams, especially seeing how quickly this one came together. I suppose that's the nature of these things but seeing the process is a nice reminder! I've always appreciated the idea of being part of something bigger in these events 😁
I liked seeing the technical challenge presented by the tile count in this jam, even though it seems that wasn't an issue in your case! 👾
Thanks! 😸 And yeah it was quite refreshing to work within the scenario of a Jam; the upside of the time constraint is that it forces you to make stylistic decisions pretty fast - also pretty motivating to know that there's a bunch of other people working toward a similar thing at that same moment ✨
This is too cool! I have been doing game jams for years, and I never knew about this.
This is amazing, I love how there's so much detail you can get out of the gameboy palette if you know how to use it properly!
Well sure, you have 4 shades of green (or on the greyscale). More than enough to generate pixel art.
It was my first jam. I participated inspired by your job. Thank you so much. I had so much fun!
This really makes me want to get back on to my gameboy game creation! Lost in the preplanning! Lol! Making the artwork always gets me hyped!
That's really cool! You're art is great, even when 8-bit. You should definitely think about collab'ing with some Game Boy Homebrew devs. It'll be good content for your channel, exposure for the game boy homebrew community, a lot of fun, and feel good to have a actual game.
Love this idea!
I'd definitely be happy to collaborate. It would be nice to have a second artist on board
Grammar moment
@@haffey2You understood everything.
4 colors is in fact 2-bit ;)
And yeah, this is some really great art, especially considering the restricted palette and tile count.
Awesome, love the color palette and the art.
WOW! So cool!
I'm seeing this vid like a couple days after participating in GBJAM 11 finished, so thats a bit funny.
Also, the final art looks soooooo good!!
Well done!!
I'm always in awe of your process, and for this one, I particularly love the HUD and the recolors! Such a fun jam with a great result!
I love this art style!
Beautiful
That's so awesome! I'll definitely will load these onto my flash cartridge and look at them through the actual hardware :D I love the gameboy aesthetic, as you can see in my current devlog series. A lot of great inspiration here!
Ooh awesome! I gotta learn how to do the cartridge thing :D
This is great! This is still my favorite console. I still have my grey brick and I play it once a while.
What a cool outro!
love it
This is such a cool jam. I love this community!
Cannot believe I just opened youtube like "I fancy a video from that pixel art guy" and checked my notifications and :¬|
That's a really cool sounding competition/jam.
every time i watch one of your videos, it fires me up to go make original gameboy art
I love game boy art, especially game boy color
Nicely done!
Getting some good WindWaker vibes with the end music ☺️ Turned out great and love "Catlantis" 😁
I was sadly to late for this had like to try it myself. Really nice work as always :)
best of luck!!
que hermoso trabajo, realmente me inspiras a seguir, saludos 😍😍
I need to play this game, NOW
Nice work! I really enjoyed your submission! I had a lot of fun participating in the Jam as well! I made one called “Tangerine Dream” and had to keep erasing unique tiles to get it to fit to the 192 limit! Hope you join more of these jams! 🤠
No disrespect to the other entries but yours REALLY stands out ... 👍
yooo, cool!!
Ah thanks so much, I’ve been an artist on the game “Walter” on itch. It’s been so challenging for me as well!
I wouldn't mind seeing more of these kinds of videos for only just the gameboy.
Nice
thanks i was just buying homebrew supplies carteidges ganeboys etc and i just wrote a hive blog about your art being better than ai pixelart cuz its gameboy! and your photoshop template and the need for this 8 x 8 grid size and how you design stuff using a template thats implying an actual game map in background very handy. thanks
Brandon again with the coolest mockups of games I'll never play 😢
Fun fact: Flipping (sadly not rotating) tiles was introduced with the GameBoy Color. I guess Nintendo figured it would be a useful feature after all.
Took a look at the submissions and if these were actual screenshots from real games, yours is the one I'd want to play! "Captain Cat's Sky Adventure"? I remember playing it constantly on road trips! Never understood why a cat was trusted around carrier pigeons, but.
Thanks! Haha "Captain Cat's Sky Adventure" is now canon 😺✨
I need this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video as always. What's that music at the end?
I'd play this game
More gameboy pixel art for gameboy games please? Top down sprites and environments
You're always making me want to play games that never existed.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa omg!!!!!!!!!!!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
✌️😎
Forgive me such a "poor" comment but you already know what I think about your art ❤️😊😉
@@DadVader Hahaha oh of course, trust me "I know" (like Han Solo) - thanks for all the support! ☺
@@BJGpixel My pleasure 😁
You should use your pixel art and make a GB Studio game. I’d follow your tutorials. I see previous videos on it but I’d be interested in seeing you make a fully working game.
I'm surprised you used two random recolors instead of the GBC palettes :)
what do you set the PPI to?
Next challenge - make another piece of artwork only using tiles from that sprite sheet.
Please animate this! 💜
That looks beautiful!
(first btw)
Please do a video about nintendo❤
Nobody ever wants to deal with color limits.
art? no games?
