  • Today we are taking a look at what I think is the best entry level espresso machine, the Gaggia Classic Pro. The secret to pulling a good shot of espresso is start with good coffee, use a good grinder, and finally use a good espresso machine. For under $500 I haven't found an espresso machine that performs better than the Gaggia Classic Pro. It is a high quality machine that will pull a great shot right out of the box but also has alot of upgradable options that allows you to dial things up a notch as you dive deeper into the coffee hobby. Hope you guys enjoy this look at the Gaggia Classic Pro.
Big thanks to the folks at Whole Latte Love that were kind enough to collaborate with me on this video and provide me the machine for review!! Show those guys some love!

Purchased one at the beginning of the pandemic after months of research. Better than most high end coffee shops. You can get it cheap from amazon but decided to go with experts at Whole Latte Love, and so glade I did. they have great support and highly recommend "Whole Latte Love" more than a business for them, they love coffee!

One of the key cheats, for steaming /frothing milk, with any Gaggia Classic old or new is to turn on the steam switch and wait 20-25 seconds … purge the water out of the steam wand and start steaming and texturing your milk. This 20-25 second delay is what brings the boiler up to and near the proper steaming temperature, without allowing the internal boiler thermostat to shut the heating elements in the boiler. You want the temperature ascending from 190 degrees on up past 212 (i.e. boiling) and a bit past that before the boiler shuts down the heating elements and you lose steam power. If you turn the steam switch on and wait until the red indicator comes on, you will not have enough time to properly steam and texture your milk.

Had the old Gaggia Classic and it held up for 15 years... no question when it died that I'd replace it with another Gaggia. The GC Pro is a slightly upgraded version of the original and I'm pulling beautiful shots right out of the box. The frothing wand is new, and there was a bit of a learning curve, with help from a couple videos I found on Whole Latte Love's website... now I'm getting much better froth than the old Gaggia was capable of producing. To my knowledge, there is no machine anywhere near this price point that comes close to this quality. And I reiterate... these solidly built fellows will be reliable for many years. Great review of a great product.

Big coffee nerd. I’ve had a rancillio, a breville dual boiler, and now work at a shop on a la marzocco. This is a great place to start getting ready solid coffee at home, and it’s nice to see they’re offering a good machine for a pretty competitive price.
Jeremy, you should pick up an OCD distribution tool. It levels your coffee perfectly prior to tamping and really improves your shot. They’re cheap and it massively improves your coffee.

Awesome review of this system! You are so right, I've had my classic pro for a year now before all the fun colors came out but no regrets! It's a solid machine. I've got the stainless steel version but this black one looks awesome too! I would suggest a great pairing w/grinder to look into the baratza sette 270, I have the timed version not weighted. Solid grinder, especially since I enjoy trying new beans on the daily. A great investment on the set.

As you keep going down the rabbit hole you figure what's missing for you and what works. I just jumped straight to a high end dual boiler machine with an E61 grouphead and let me tell you man: it's so nice.
Also triple shot basket + bottomless portafilter = ❤

I can vouch for these machines, though I have a much older version. Paired with a Sette 270, it just gives me so much control and convenience. With some practice , it’s easy high quality coffee. My poor moka pot has gone unused for a year.

  • @n8lbv
    @n8lbv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spectacular video!
I've been using it to help my friends out, less work for me.
I sport a really old version of this machine from 2002.
It's still going strong in 2021.
Have taken good care of it but also used the living hell out of it.
It's had constant use since it was bought new for $205 on some special sale almost twenty years ago.
I've taken it on the road countless times to events & all.
Replaced the group seal and got a bottomless portafilter about three years ago.
I'd like more manual controls of some things than you get on this class of machine as I have learned more about it but I have
also learned or developed a few tricks of my own to get some more control of things while using this old classic.
Mine has a solid brass boiler which you probably do not get on the newer versions in this class anymore.

@@OrangeFerriswheel very. There’s a few upgrades like a bottomless portafilter and definitely invest in a good grinder. I have the Eureka Facile (manual measurement dosing) and it’s been wonderful. Easy to lock in 3 different type of beans sitting at the 1:2 ratio since I’ve had the machine.
Also, the 9 bar mod is the best mod to do. It’s a game changer. If ya got any questions about it, just message me. Would love to help out anyone interested in the Gaggia. Cheers ☕️

Thanks for the review Jeremy. We have a DeLonghi that’s struggling to perform and are actively looking for something at $500 or less. Props for mentioning James Hoffman. That dude is the coffee guru! Unrelated....the beard and fade look awesome!

Thanks brotha! Yeah man, that guy has forgotten more about coffee than I will ever know. 😂 He is the man for sure! Definitely do some digging into this one man. I’ve been using it for a couple months now and I have been loving it. Plus it has tons of upgrades like I mentioned so you can upgrade it as you go. 😉👍🏻

After watching James video on a similar topic I’ve decided to pull the trigger. He made a decent argument for the Rancilio because of its ability to be modded, but the Gaggia was a close second.
Off topic again...I’ve seen the Boston’s you have running around, but just found the video of Hank after he ate the baster. Is hank still around? He’s huge freaking teddy bear if a doggo. Is he still part of the family?

This is a great review! I’m tempted by this machine, though two things worry me. First, as you say, the clearance under the group head. I’d need to get a Timemore Black Mirror scale and a shot glass under there. Secondly, I’ve read that the height is 38 cm, and really hope that’s exactly right: at that height it would just squeak under my kitchen units, but otherwise wouldn’t! (The front loading tank is a huge benefit, given I’d have always to move it out to fill it from the top.)

If that had a brass boiler I'd be ALL IN!. I still love Gaggia. I have an old baby with the 3 bolt boiler and a capillary thermostat. It's a tank! Even though It's not my best, It is my favorite.

HI James, great video. I ended up buying GCP from WLL. quick question, what brand scale do you use to weigh the shot? I've noticed the clearance between portafilter and drip tray small. thank you!

surprisingly until now a lot of channels still doesn't have this high quality
btw, does the gaggia classic pro still holds its own today as an "entry" level espresso machine or there are competitors now?
