My first proof of a hero moment was with a buddy of mine in our first try ever against lao in mhf2...we failed...so i always kinda EXPECT to fail during the proof of a hero segment of any new monster im fighting first time, its almost a tradition of mine XD.
What REALLY pissd me off tou is that i carted a SECOND before Fata died to a ZSD to the face of one of the guys helping me...my very own "official" fata kill was with me getting stunned (that ONE time i ditched stun res III) and carting inglouriously, away from the fight, with fata kicking the bucket even before my limp body hit the darn ground... i didn't mind the missed carves...but darn i hoped for a more dignified way to end the fight...

Phase 1: Fearsome and foreboding. You are going against the legend itself: Fatalis. The monster of myth. The monster who razed a kingdom in a single night. Pray that your mission is successful. Or at the very least, pray that your death will be quick.
Phase 2: The fierce battle. You have done well to last this long. But all you have done is merely survive. The fiercest battle of your life still lies before you. And you are far from done.
Phase 3: Proof of a hero. You have done what an entire army could not: you have held your own against Fatalis, proving that this monster of myth can be beaten. You have given the people a glimmer of hope, hope that wasn't present on that fateful night at Castle Schrade, for you are the Sapphire Star, the very symbol of hope. And this is a testament to your strength. To your courage.
This is your proof of a hero.

I feel like monster hunter doesn't get quite enough appreciation for its music. In most games like metroid or dark souls, I'm usually like "Yeah, this fits the mood. I'm enjoying this song." I've never had any song in any game completely change my opinion of how a fight is gonna go before. But the moment proof of a hero starts playing I get this feeling of "This is the final stretch, I CAN do this!" Its one of the most unique feelings I've ever had in all of gaming.

Safi, KT and Raging Brachydios are the fuckin boys for music. I went out of my way to carry so many people just to hear the music. Already built absolutely everything but the music kept me coming back and making me feel good. Like in Dark Souls I'd carry people on Lothric but it never quite feels the same. I never really feel any threat from Dark Souls, I don't feel like I'm taking down something amazing(even though I guess I am) it just doesn't quite feel the same.

Well. This is as good a place as any to drop my story.
I was assembling furniture for my new apartment where my fiance and I will live soon. I was listening to a random TH-cam mix and THIS video came up. I thought it was just the Fatalis theme. But then, as I was finishing up the last of the furniture piece I heard the opening prelude to Proof of a Hero. I literally teared up because it all hit me at once.
It was 2009. I was home from school, sick, as usual. I had recently been diagnosed with IBS (the worst kind) and had yet to have been diagnosed with severe anxiety and Asperger's syndrome. The few friends I had didn't come around much since I got sick. I was depressed, constantly. My brother has taken the Xbox with him once he moved out, the only videogames we had left was a Wii with Wii sports and my dying Nintendo DS. That's when I saw a commercial for Monster Hunter Tri on the TV. I was enraptured by the music, and begged my Mom to buy it when it came out. I fell in love as soon as I played it, feeling like I had discovered an absolute hidden gem of a game. A little secret to keep to myself. I wasn't Link or Master Chief, I was MY character. My own hero whose story I determined. I didn't kill the bosses with slick moves in a choreographed cutscene, every killing blow was my own accomplishment. I had constant progression, and could see how far I had come. I made it to online and I made friends, ones that were always there, same time every day. I remember people helping me with my first Jhen Mohran. I remember doing the Goldenfish quests with other people, endlessly. I remember gentle guidance, goofy animations and excitedly running to the cliff of the Rathalos nest to try and knock people off into the ocean with a greatsword. I was so in love I went back, and played Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Again I was my own hero, and it was more challenging. I played 3 ultimate, but this time with a keyboard to speak to people properly. I made true friends. Not just gaming buddies but people that I talked to about life, my day, my emotions. People that genuinely cared.
I was diagnosed with Aspergers. Suddenly I was whisked out of school, into a new one. Suddenly my parents didn't know what to do. I had solace, I had Moga and Pokke, their calming music, familiar and welcoming, at the end of each scary new day. I had friends, something to look forward to, and accomplishments to feel proud of in a time where I felt like everything I did was wrong.
I became more outgoing, social. I planned events, group gatherings to farm for rare materials (Cloudy Moonshard, oh my gosh) and do the hardest Monsters. I learned how to communicate, something hard for people with any form of autism. Even past those, my hardest days, I had Monster Hunter. Always a new one to look forward to, from 4, all the way till Sunbreak at the end of this month. I introduced, not exaggerating, dozens of friends to Monster Hunter World, and I adored the game I loved so much finally getting the widespread recognition it deserved. I loved fighting Fatalis, finally getting to feel a piece of the original game. And I loved watching, nurturing my friends into beating him. Feeling Proof of a Hero, that anthem I had heard so many times before, blasting in my ears. I loved asking, awkwardly, my now fiance if she wanted to try the demo for Rise as one of our first dates.
So when I was there, doing the simple task of assembling a cabinet, and I heard this nostalgia filled masterpiece, those triumphant horns. It all clicked, the past 13 years of my life flashed before me.
Monster Hunter was there for me when I was at my lowest. It taught me to be my own hero. Taught me determination, perseverance, dedication to achieve my goals. It taught my awkward Aspergers brain how to socialize and communicate with others. It was always something to look forward to. To rely on.
I'm getting married in 3 days. I know that it's very small odds that anyone from my Tri or 3U or 4U days remembers me (username was SonicJBH), but I'll say it to the community as a whole: thank you. Thank you for being there, for teaching me how to play, how to make friends, how to be happy. Thank you for taking me through my darkest days, and into my happiest ones. Thank you, so much, from the bottom of my heart, for making me into the man that had the courage to propose.
Some people might say it's stupid to credit a game community with so much. But those are people who haven't been apart of this community, the best most caring gaming community ever.
Thank you to all those I played with, and to all who play the game and make it what it is.
I will see you in Sunbreak hunters, after my honeymoon.
May the Sapphire Star guide our way.
    -SonicJohnBH

I love how his theme is not only a reflection of where Castle Schrade is geologically,(with the song being a more epic and ominous version of LIOLEUS/Howling, the battle theme of Forest and Hills/Verdant Forest and Rathalos, as it has always been), but that the 1st phase this version of his theme is a reflection of Gen 1, with the Kotoko Village theme being sprung in out of nowhere! The 2nd phase on the other hand changes to have themes introduced in World and Iceborne, which kicks things up a notch, showing that yes, we're showing him that this isn't a Gen 1 fight anymore, but the best bit is when The Last and Decisive Battle(the Gen 1 battle version of Proof of Hero) kicks in after the Dragonator usage, doubling down on the idea that THIS is the True Final Boss of MHW, and hearing the Quest Clear theme of Gen 1 Monster Hunter just ties it all up together. The fight's theme was a pure nostalgia trip and I'm glad Capcom made these choices.

    • @SuperInfinitezero00
      @SuperInfinitezero00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

I'll piggy-back on to this brilliant comment to add that I feel like this is also a reminder to all hunters, whether you're a grizzled veteran from Gen 1 or fresh minted hunter from Gen 5 or anywhere in between. The end of the battle unites everyone. We all get the proof that we are Heroes, no matter where you started from, because you ended up here defeating Fatalis. And the classic arrangement is just SO good.

1st phase: Fatalis is real, not just a myth meant to scare children; it's here in front of you with all of its fury and hatred.
2nd phase: It is on a rampage and no one could stop it. The chorus is like the voices of the people crying out for help desperately.
3rd phase: When everything seems to be at its end, when all hopes were just about to disappear. The hero comes in and defeat the monster, saving everyone just like in the old children tale.

what an AMAZING theme. it starts off with such dramatic singing and loud, explosive instruments! it really captures the feeling of not only knowing that Fatalis, an existence, has appeared once again, it's presence being exhausting and overwhelming in of itself.
The middle is just as amazing to me; louder, more explosive, but also showing cracks of hope through the waxing fanfare; you can hear the horns breaking out of the loud theme as it progresses, and a more controlled choir expresses a long and treacherous journey! the song later leans in the hunter's favor; familiar tunes are played through the foreground and the explosiveness is now wild, adventurous and adaptive, almost like a hunter!
And of course, it ends with Proof of a Hero. past the explosiveness, the fear and exhaustion, the wilderness, the obstacles and barriers is your final challenge. the inspiration that led you to hunt is the same inspiration guiding your final blows to end Fatalis.
    God, what an AMAZING SCORE!

A few weeks back, when Fatalis dropped, I was busy with university so I didn't jump on the hype train immediately. However, I did my research, looking at what people recommend when going up against him. 2 weeks later, I tried my hands on the special assignment. Just like how it should went, I was a bit rusty and almost failed the assignment. Finally, Fatalis flew up and the cutscene played. I watched this part a lot of times already, but it really hits differently when you are the one in the hot seat. I quickly reset the quest, this time firing the SOS. 3 random guys immediately came in as I flew back down to face Fatalis once again.
The fight played out just like how I imagined it: us 4 constantly kissing and rolling on the ground trying to deal damage to him. The barricade scene came, I ran back into the gate in awe when he rained flames upon the castle. As one of the teammates closed the gate, somehow I carted. It was just then that we realized that we are down to the last cart. (Yes, I ate for safeguard but that wasn't enough I guess lmao)
The fight went on, as heated as it can get. A guy using lance was poking Fatalis's head and breast to oblivion while the other 2 spam ZSD on the head. I used longsword, the only weapon I'm most comfortable with when fighting hard monsters like him. We managed to break his head once before he went up for the 3rd time. Then came the 4th time. At that point, I was almost out of healing items. I'm not sure if I can go on any longer. It seemed...endless. Then, a text box popped up at the right side of the screen: The dragonator and roaming ballista are ready to use. I signaled my teammates to run for the handle. I reached there first, then the 2 guys using switch axe. The lance guy used his dash move heading for us as Fatalis slithered behind him. I hit my controller button firing the dragonator, as soon as he is in range and Fatalis fell back at the instant.
We jumped down to do damage as usual when Proof of the Hero comes on. At this point I feel like something awoke inside of me. I threw on my Temporal Mantle and jumped on the ballista before being interrupted by Fatalis doing his ult again. When he came down, the lance guy shot a binder to hold him and dash-rush for the head. Half a health bar left and no more healing items, I jumped back on the ballista and fired away. I'm not going to lose here, this is the last opening and I'm so close. But at the end of the ballista magazine, he's still not dead and is getting up on his hindlegs. I ran towards him, spirit slash 1, and went for the helmbreaker. At the swishing sound, Fatalis finally fell for the last time. My final attack went straight through the middle of his head and body, breaking his head the 2nd time in the process. I also always do a special sheathe after the helmbreaker due to muscle memory so it was just my character standing there with her sword sheathed anime-style as Fatalis falls to the ground and the victory theme plays. I didn't have this kind of adrenaline rush since Safi. (Alatreon and Kulve's first kills were more of a relief, if you get what I mean).
Monster Hunter World was my first game of the franchise and this fight is the most appropriate send-off in my opinion. It started as a game that my friend told me to buy and come play with her because it was "on sale" to one of my most favorite franchise of all time. I'll will be eagerly waiting for MH:Rise while I try to farm fatty parts and trying to somehow wack AT Velkhana's head, then I'll probably move on to MHGU if I have time. This fight, though, would stay with me for quite a long while, I can tell.
And to all my fellow hunters that helped me through all the quests, not just Fatalis, thank you for being part of the experience. Happy hunting and I hope we meet again in one of the quests!

The progression is simple, but effective. The intro is filled with loud chanting, banging drums, and sharp string sections as if the music itself is part of the onslaught of this ancient evil. Then is tones down the stings and the drums and chanting get quieter while the pace picks up. It’s still menacing, but seems more manageable. Like your hunter is starting to calm down and become more focused. Then the pace picks up, but the instruments start to drown out the chanting more, as if Fatalis is starting to lose its dominance over the battle. Then the tables turn and it shifts to Proof of a Hero: the Hunter has gathered their courage and is going to overwhelm this ancient evil with the accumulation of all their experiences.

Iceborne really is notorious of taking advantage of the power of the consoles to bring old monsters in a shining glory of improvement and/or change.
The quality however differs on each monster and hunter's opinion.
    - Old Rajang was bigger and there was decent downtime between a good chunk of attacks wich balances out he's insane damage output (a single back hop could erase you) and very quick/lack of telegraphs in some moves so the difficulty of the fight depends on your ability to correctly punish Rajang after he attacks.
New Rajang has a lil more telegraphing (but not that much) and is smaller, has new moves to boot and a counter to clutching onto his arms. He's way more relentless and most of his moves have lost the downtime they had after beeing used (like the sonic homing attack having instant recovery). Even tripping him is dangerous because if he grabs onto any "wall" then he just attacks you and never falls down. However, I've found him to be more flinchable, can be slinger bursted into a wall and attacking his tail enough will knock him out of his extra enrage where he has hard arms. Lastly he's very unpreddictable wich is a change most monsters have suffered when coming to Iceborne. The fight has become more reactionary than methodical wich can be a plus or a minus for some people.
    - Then we have Lunastra. Old Lunastra is just a reskin of Teostra, THE END.
New Lunastra was changed to be very distinct from Teostra without totally beeing a different monster... I think that was the intention.
The thing is that nearly every move she has is some tipe of variation of an AoE attack. The fire patches she leaves are very annoying for both blademasters and ranged hunters. She has shitty hitzones. Fighting her will involve a great amount of annoying gradual damage. Her nova is very annoying having it cover the full zone, having your health melt like butter and having a wind effect that will stun and prevent you from countering the health melting with a healing item. A change that is good for making her clearly different from Teostra but also bad because she is very annoying and un-fun to fight.
    - Glavenus hasn't changed a lot, just the typical World change of making the monster more unpredictable and a little less downtime between attacks (unlike rajang having nearly no downtime on most attacks).
    - The old Fatalis' difficulty came from the truck load of damage he could do in general including moving... yes moving. His pool of attacks was pretty small and hasn't had an adition to it for a good while (and no, we are not counting the variants, they are their own monsters). The fight was generaly underwhelming and the small pool of attacks with clear telegraphs made him very predictable and punishable, you just had to be carefull of beeing too close to Fatalis in case he moved and you made contact with him (just like with the old Rajang's backhop).
New fatalis still has his old attacks, is a bit bigger and still has the smae amount of fair telegraphing so the fight is still reasonably learnable unlike _OTHER_ fights. But instead of making things annoying and tedious like with Lunastra they've added new attacks that honestly feel mostly fair (except the pin attack, that is very annoying) with mostly good telegraphs. When in the air he cannot touch you when you clutch claw him so go ham, just be aware of when he's going to land. As the fight progresses he uses new attacks and some of the other ones gain a lil bonus like leaving a delayed explosion. The safest place to be is between the back legs and the high legs but he still has a fair amount of attacks that can reach there and you should be very aware of when they're about to be used, the great example beeing his sorta 360 fire breath sweep where he starts at the most left/right of his body directly in this "safe space" to the sweep around in a more generous manner, never reaching the opposite side where the right/left side "safe space" isn't reached. Finally his new ultimate attack is pretty clear and fair if you are ready for it wich is pretty easy as the first two time he does it you have to hide in the same spots so always try to keep Fatalis near said spots unless you want to be roasted. It occurs when certain health thresholds are met so knowing them will also inform you of how close he's to beeing defeated. Always after the second super attack he enters his new heated form (not sure if it has a name) and most of his fire attacks a powered up tremendusly with the conical frontal firebreath beeing a guaranteed one shot. The only way to mitigate the strenght that the fire attacks gain in this form is by breaking his horns wich is pretty hard so it is recomendable to bring part breaker. Also using the seige weapons makes this fight more possible so it is also recomended to bring the heavy artillery skill. In general an massive improvement to the monster that fits him as a black dragon yet still fair and more enjoyable than something like Lunastra or Rajang.

    • @irateamatsu
      @irateamatsu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I've discovered that when wearing the rocksteady mantle against Fatalis' full power conical attack you can tank at least one maybe two hits but it solely depends on rng whether or not you take the reduced damage. With that being said, you have a slight chance to superman dive behind a rock(which is what I should've done) for cover or evade out of the cone's range to the far left or right. Not only it's pure nostalgia for people who are into the series since the PSP games at the very least (I started with Freedom Unite 11 years ago), but in a sense, it also reinforces the fact that World stayed true to the spirit of the series in the end.
Because, to be honest, I was disappointed by World at its initial release: while it was a massive improvement in terms of QoL and graphics, the fact that the first part of the game is basically a giant and chatty tutorial left me with a bitter feeling for the 15~20 first hours. Even compared to previous entries which were already criticized for having a too easy "village" part. The final showdown with Zorah Magdaros, which was supposed to be the high point of this first part of the story, was barely a boss fight. Even by standards for giant monsters at the time (like Jhen Mohran, Ceadeus and Dalamadur). In the end, the Proof of a Hero theme you could hear then was the only thing that could let me think "yup, it's a Monster Hunter game".
While the high rank wasn't much more challenging (but still an improvement), the free DLCs started hopefully introducing more challenging stuff, and I especially enjoyed AT Xeno'jiiva and AT Kulve Taroth. Then Iceborne was released and turned out definitely harder than World, even though I still think the difficulty could be better balanced (in my opinion, it's way too easy to accumulate and max out skills). And they kept delivering with the DLCs for Iceborne: even if most quests still don't last as long as in previous games when you are well prepared, most endgame monsters can still punish you hard for being too greedy or for coming unprepared. But that revamped Fatalis really try to push you to your limits and require all at once a good build, a good strategy and some skill in order to stand a chance. You can't get more "Monster Hunter" than that... except if you play the bombastic original Proof of a Hero during the final minutes.

This version is so, so much better than the old one, when i fought Fatalis in MHFU i really didn't concect that much with the theme, to me it was just a vocal version of the Forest Hills theme. But just by hearing the start of this one 0:02, you know you're gonna mess with something terrible and powerful, something that can end the world by just existing, something that even the Gods fear.
I haven't heard a theme that made me fear a boss like this since Sephiroth's theme, the lyrics, though without any meaning (from what i know of) give the fight a more "serious" and "intimidating" tone, since the only monsters that have had vocals in their fights are Godlike creatures.
Not only that, but it literally gave me chills the first time i heard it, and i think a lot of people missed that detail, but you can hear a leimotiv of Kokoto's theme 1:27, the very first Monster Hunter village, this being a simbolism of the first ever final monster. The second phase theme is just as incredible, having leimotives of the many tracks of MHW, like Astera's theme and Driven by the Stars.
But holy shit, did a tear crossed through my eye when i heard the OG Proof of a Hero, i'm pretty sure that every MH veteran felt the same way when pulling the lever, the dragonator razoring Fatalis chest and slowly realizing that the very first MH theme was being displayed, just a masterpiece of a fight and pretty much my favorite final encounter in any videogame to date.
    Amazing job Capcom.
