    Remember when I started Thaiboxing coming from a Taekwondo background. The hands were difficult to adjust (trained at a boxing gym also to learn), but the kicks were easy to adjust to Muay Thai. Taekwondo kicks aren't totally worthless - you learn speed, variation and timing.

      Right but u must have that timing that sped and that IQ taekwondo don't work for fighters Thant stick to ground and go for po we and timing rather than speed. And for those people also that brag about learning taekwondo but when they fight they look like fukin stuck in the mud

      Started with TKD here. The kicks and even the low kicks came very naturally but the hands took me a while to adjust to. I still have a few bad defensive habits but its always getting better.

    Historically Kickboxing is derived from Karate with more boxing/punching combos and defence added. To say face punch Karate is kickboxing is a misnomer because they move more in a linear way in a bladed stance with hit and move one or two punches then a kick. Whereas Full Contact/ American kickboxing is like Karate with boxing hands and strategic evasive footwork.

    one of the way to counter the spinning back kick is the side step to an overhand, sometimes it is just like the sheer power of the backkick is so intimidating that many inexperienced people like myself choose to step away from it, instead of jamming right into it and land a counter. A great example is an ONE championship match where Martin Nguyen KOed Eduard Folayang with a side step overhand while Folayang, a Sanda specialist, was in a middle of his spinning back kick.

      @mynameismynameis666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mykulpierce all of the choices you just gave can be pretty much nullified by pressureing forward as soon as they decide to do anything but reseting distance as most offensive answers from the back legged positions can be nullified by pressuring closer or pushing them. and i say this as a former tkd practitioner. this is the trick i used to dominate most of my opponents. usually stuffing their foot as they lift it and then skipping from there into a sidekick as they have to reset or reposition their front foot for a follow up and i have my leg already lifted and pointing their direction. sure, if someone uses proper form for chambering their leg, this becomes incredibely hard to pull off, but most don't use such perfect form during a fight/sparring

      @@mynameismynameis666 Oh I see what you mean. I thought up meant just coming forward. For sure it going to favor who gets that side kick into position first to stuff the others front leg! I'm sure you have seen this countless times. Are you still competing? I'm ramping up for competitions to ramp up and also joined an MMA gym with a local pro to guide me. Looking forward to competing in both sports this year!
      If you don't mind me asking, how are Taekwondo events handled in your area? I recently found out how the US Team picks Taekwondo fighters for Olympic team is with a point system that's accumulated by placing in different events across the country. Then finding out the top points for the guy in my weight class is in the US Army athlete program, so he gets the government money to pay for travel and entry fees. Sheesh. Makes me kind of sad, because its a super expensive hobby compared to other combat sports in the US.

      @@mykulpierce sorry i m an old dude, my experience comes from fighting a few tournaments 20 years ago and switching between tkd, kickoxing and mma at a time when neither financial nor social media infrastructure for the sports existed in my country, as of now, i m just training to age healthy and mean and i m lucky to be in a gym under and with people who train and compete on a professional international level..
      i ve talked with US olympic tkdathletes and many of them - in my eyes - were army tools (at the time knee deep in the belief that Saddam was alquaeda and had WMDs... some time around the 2000s)...that being said: being a professional fighter where i live also depends heavily on being part of government/state funded programs, many of which involve military athletic programmes - and in turn sponsorships - and you have to be on the coaches good side of course or you won't pass the bottleneck. athletes are PR projection surfaces for nationalism. hard to get rid of that form of tribalism

    My experience (as coming from taekwondo) is that we have a hard time fighting against a solid stationary defence, and lots of low kicks. Most people run out of gas just because Taekwondo is a more cardio intensive style and we don't have low kicks. So just relax don't make mistakes and wait for them to tire out ;) hand game and defence in Taekwondo is really evolving because people have started to join kickboxing tournaments, which is super awesome, so thanks for that!

I returned the favour with strong knees and he was saved by the bell... I’m a TKD fighter who’s training for the 2022 AAU TKD season. I’m looking to mix things up and adopt a more Muay Thai approach to fighting, much like you laid out here. The hang up is many techniques in Muay Thai are not allowed at these tournaments (leg kicks, punches to the face, knee & elbows) as well as an abundance of protective gear (shin and forearm guards, chest guards, etc.).
    I’m determined to still make it work as it’ll be a lot of fun to go against the grain and challenge myself in such a way. This video gave me some great insights as to how I should adapt my training. If you have any additional tips or suggestions for my situation, I’d greatly appreciate them.

    Low kicks can be avoided, bypassed, blocked from side stance. Depends on how fast you can move your leading leg. You can kick away the low kick. You can make kick combinations. You can punch the leg/knee of the oponent. Huge advantage of side stance is that oponent can't reach effectively your liver. Punch the leg of the oponent in mid air. Block the kick with elbow.

    Check out Bas Rutten's "Karate Combat". The truth is, Kick Boxing utilizes much more boxing, conditioning, sparring, (low kicks!) and is simply overwhelming in face to face clashes. Taekwondo and Karate are too d/refined by rules and unified training process for the kick boxing ring. In Taekwondo's defense, no kick boxer can stand a chance versus Taekwondo master under Taekwondo rules. I will gladly elaborate if anyone disagrees :)

    the advantage of being a former Taekwondo fighter is that i understand what they're trying to do. since I retired from taekwondo in 2008. I joim with synergy MMA n muaythai gym at seminyak Bali. it's a rough muaythai sparring session I had. cuz you know I was a jerk. In my mind I think I'm national taekwondo champion. it would be easy.
    no no no. a got paired with Travis an Aussie n he beat the shit out of me. I don't know what I have to do. I never train to slip, party OR block punches to the face. I never train to clinch and thrown knee. after the fight when I calmed I said to my self. man I'm suck at fighting. since than I know to be an effective fighters I have to learn many things. till now. yes I won some championship. but i don't compete long for I was already 30 something old when I join kick boxing and muaythai. not bad for an old guy I guess. n Travis thanks for holding back you could knock me out cold but you didn't.

      Mostly it is about learning boxing and proper defense, like blocking as he showed in the video. Some things in karate and taekwondo can be useful, but I think you should be able to learn or relearn bad habits as bad guard and not tucking down your chin. And be more grounded in your stance to take impact.

      It could. The low side kick has never really bothered me though. Keep your knee bent and you're safe. I don't think the damaged will add up like round kicks to the leg.

    • @fpsneb7408
      @fpsneb7408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GabrielVargaOfficial true but it keeps them at range (some can really hunt). ''You think we are going low,'' then back kick to the body or round kick the head. It builds up to open the other fighter, its a longer range jab of kick. Just it can break ribs if you can time it right. The a to b is so fast compere to a lead leg round kick. I do like to mix up style if people fight a long range I stay close, same for short range fighters I stay at range. If they are a kicker I counter kick and out boxes them, same for fighters who like to boxes more out kick them at range open them up for a big shot. Sorry for essay. Good foot work always wins.

    I trained karate for about 8 years and switched to muay thai/kickboxing for some of these reasons and more. To me the most thrown attack on the “street” is some kind of hook, and karate did not teach me how to defend against that. That was the biggest reason I wanted to switch

    A really great video... pretty much sums up everything you need to know about how to increase your chances of beating a typical karate/taekwondo fighter. These tips are exactly the things I've found to work when I fight other karate fighters (if your karate style skills & theirs are about equal, just box or clinch). Not being able to train at the dojo last year forced me to learn what I could online. Videos like the ones on this channel have really helped me improve my kickboxing skill (just because you practice karate doesn't mean you have to bad at kickboxing & in some ways your kickboxing can help you in karate/taekwondo as well).

    Honestly. I wish traditional martial arts would cleanse themselves of outdated teachings. I enjoy seeing different styles in the ring, but the reason you never see traditional styles often is because they are required to cross train or they can't even compete. Not knowing how to deal with hand combos in a thousand plus year old art is just silly. And if someone sends me a video with a teacher demonstrating on a student standing completely still for a hand combo i'm not even going to watch it.

    Your tips makes sense as usual very good tips as a former instructor i agree with everything you said basically, but I wouldn't take the hurricane kick to the guard (double sided guard)if I could avoid that kick all together, if it's a hurricane crecent kick it's ok but if it's a hurricane round kick it's so much harder than a Thai high kick or a mawashi Geri type round kick and if they do it like me, connect with the shin you will still get rocked or kicked down..i have one video of it on my channel.and my last trainer in a club i was substitute helping instructor for the slow Learners i wasnt allowed to do that in sparring not Even in the dedicated sparring day's after I did it on The owner because he got really rocked and had to go and take five minutes on the bench and complained when he came back to the sparring (Lars Erik)and said we are supposed to go 70 percent but he can't really do it correctly.its not possible to because it's not the muscle strength The mechanics alone even when being kinda relaxed but doing it correctly can knock you out easily Even you have both gloves outside each other etc.its basically like blocking a Thai high kick with a MMA glove.,, you should instead shuffle forward so he's thigh connect instead of the instep or shin.. it's atleast triple the power of a Thai high kick..in featherweight it's maybe ok but not extra hw like me or WORSE.

    I lost a match to a Taekwondo guy...Taekwondo rules. Cldnt use leg kicks, knees, clinch, and no upper cuts!! His movement was excellent until I rushed him. And then when I landed the ref kept breaking it up. It was the most ridiculous one sided fight I’ve ever had. I think even if I had knocked him out I would’ve lost...judges were all Taekwondo!! Crazy.

    Guy on the ring didn't react wise. He should have used a technique to push you away and then kept pressuring into that gap to widen it and break free. At least three attacks come to my mind right now for that, two kicks (push, not snap like he did) and one sidewards double punch (though never saw the last one actually used, but should work).
    [edit:] Here is the punch. I'd use it in that situation with a very tight guard, going much lower and faster into my knees and then explosively unfold forward-up with the power of my legs. Name is Hama Zuki.

      Hi Maggnet. Yeah,,, except 99% of competition karateka regurgitate & repeat the introductory kumite tactic. Mindlessly. Then when they realize they can't negotiate even the most basic karate tradition technicals... they morph into kickboxer's which they never learned the basics there either. Result... smash-cithy... on them.
