Claiming black edits come from narcissism is… certainly a take! While there are people who do it out of some kind of egotistical “I’m better than you” mindset, the majority of people who make black edits are just trying to have fun with redesigns (and also want more representation in media they like) If they are claiming to have “fixed” the source material, that’s when it’s problematic People redesign characters ALL THE TIME And I’ve seen plenty of redesigns do the same editing format (search mlp redesigns on TH-cam shorts or TikTok and see how quick you find ones with the format of: original design -> redesign edit using the original as a base) But nobody notices it until it’s black edits, which is a bit telling in my opinion… Most of the time they’re just artists who like anime and want more representation, so they redesign their fave characters to look more like themselves You can criticize them without accusing them of being narcissistic Also grouping all black editers as some kind of monolith is??? Also interesting! I agree that selling black edits for money is… Weird. Whether you like it or not that’s tracing and you shouldn’t be making MONEY off of that But not every black edit is for money or to feel better than other people Some people who call out black edits are genuinely racist (ive see it) but not all of them are??? These are individuals, not a hive mind Its not black and white (haha) Also, the Marina drawing isn’t problematic either, I think white washing is bad but the Marina drawing was actually explained as something completely other White washing would be erasing ethnic features or skin color out of racism or colorism, it’s more a judge of intention from how I see it But I’ve seen the context with the Marina drawing and how, it was based off other official artwork where her skin was lighter Showing that if there was any colorism, it was a societal issue not an individual issue I also know that in asian media darker characters have more nuance and aren’t always considered black unless they have specific features And since Marina is a heavily stylized character with no textured hair, it could go over certain peoples head Also, this is off topic, but the whole trend of calling anyone slightly egotistical a narcissist will never not bother me It’s like the intrusive vs impulsive thought thing, but even worse At least the intrusive thoughts trend was never used to dehumanize people with a disorder they never chose to have I know words evolve and change no matter what, but it’s still very unfortunate for the people who are diagnosed narcissists Shout out to people with npd they could never make me stigmatize you 🙏

Doesn’t matter really. Culture does not equal black skin. I applaud the ones who fully do redesigns of the characters WITH their culture but as someone who’s Kenyan. I don’t feel represented when someone does a blasian edit of Yun Jin with my culture when Chinese Opera is notoriously known for replicating the beauty standard for hundreds of years which is literally the color white. But there’s a LOT of nuance. If someone who’s from the Middle East doesn’t appreciate the representation shown in Sumeru, they have every right to complain about it. More related to this video, the Japanese are not saints, they misrepresent cultures all the time. Which is why calling out stuff like this is important. Learn grammar before you make a statement. Using "fiction" as an excuse is one of the worse ways to go against an argument. It does matter, because art portraits the opinions and perspective of the artist.
The whole situation is stupid to me because there are literally people out there saying they “Fix” anime characters (Make them white not even asian) that have darker skin because they assume they’re black when really most of the time they’re Indian and don’t receive any type of backlash, but other then that I feel like people are doing the most it’s literally fan art it doesn’t effect the story at all if you don’t like it then don’t look at it it’s that simple. (I wish people would have this much energy when it comes to actual important stuff that’s happening around the world) Fan art is meant for the fans to express themselves, like this is nothing but pure brain, rot, and stupid. (I know some people are going to be booty tickled about what I said but idgaf 🫶🏾)
