Lyrics:
When I was young
I'd listen to the radio
Waitin' for my favorite songs
Waiting they played I'd sing along
It made me smile
Those were such happy times
And not so long ago
How I wondered where they'd gone
But they're back again
Just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well
(*) every sha-la-la-la
Every wo-wo-wo
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're starting to sing's
So fine
When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
Lookin' back on how it was
In years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad
So much has changed
It was songs of love that
I would sing to then
And I'd memorize each word
Those old melodies
Still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away
Repeat (*)
All my best memories
Come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more
(*) Repeat
As a now US citizen who was born and grew up in China I humbly, but proudly admit that this was the first song in English language that touched my heart. That happened in 1991.
Love that😊
I listened to this song for the first time in 1994 while travelling in China. It was one of the songs in the cassette which I bought on the market.

Same here, totally agree!
It is very much to Chinese and Asian tastes. Such a lovely song.

You can tell their music is amazing and affects all. As I am 18 and love the carpenters music.
Hope you well all the time :)

Same here Andy! I was 14 when this came out in 1973, I was stunned by this beautiful performance of a wonderful song, and their music has been an important part of my life ever since, and always will be.
Like a fine wine, only gets better with age. An amazing vocalist. I am now 75 and still enjoying the Carpenters.
If you listen this 2024 you are a legend ❤

Yesterday
Tears, tears, tears. After these years. I'm 78.
I'm about to turn 50. I remember being a child and hearing this on the am car radio pouring out like an angels voice that even came thru on crappie am radio and that one speaker. I get misty every time I hear this song to.
HI Jude............I'm 71, and almost daily I thank Utube and all those wonderful people that upload the great music from the 50s, 60's and yeah, some from the 70's, some of which I missed at the time, mainly Doo wop. And yes, many of them can now cause my eyes to moisten as the memories come back. Where's my time machine. LOL.
You're not crying alone there, Jude. I'm 80 and writing my autobiography with a box of tissues nearby. Lots of good memories and lots of loving people to remember, so many of them gone now.
Jude O'Connor i love u
Jude O'Connor. God bless you and your family always!
Everyone is rightly praising Karen's voice on this but we should also note Richard's brilliant arrangement. It's fantastic.
No doubt, he was also unique w/ an ear and a way to arrange not heard often.
Great arrangement, but the music he wrote here is even more impressive.
A huge hit in Korea back then, too. It was loved so much.
So true
You're absolutely right. Together, they came together and made magic.❤
The song is immortal . I use to listen to it in late seventies when I was at university in Baghdad . Now I still enjoy listening to it , and I’m 64 years old . What a magic !
Me too!. I'm 62 years old. Regards form Rosario, Argentina.

Hello Sir,i listen from Viet Nam
In my opinion, she had the greatest voice ever. Pitch perfect. And did not show off and tried to impress everyone with her voice range. She was just this incredibly talented and humble person, who’s always done what she did best, enlighten our lives with her amazing God given talent.
If I had too pick one I would agree

Exactly!! Couldn’t have said it better!! 👍❤️
Yes, I definitely agree! No screaming, no vocal gymnastics, no half-naked sexual gyrations, she just sang! and what a voice!! RIP Karen
I vote for this song as the Carpenters' best of all time.

What a voice to be blessed with! And to combine it with crystal clear diction, pronunciation, accent and unwavering stability - it's an unbelievably heavenly talent that one can't have enough of, want to just keep listening.
The words in this song are as if they were written for me....Just what I did, listen to the radio and sing every song.
What a wonderful, beautiful voice Karen had. Still very sad she lost her life so young. RIP Karen🙏
I remember when I first heard this wonderful song. I was riding in the back seat of my father's 1956 DeSoto. I remember the song coming on and how it grabbed my attention. I can honestly say this is the first song I truly liked in my childhood. I had to be about 4 or 5. Now, nearly half a century later, everytime I hear it, I am back in the old DeSoto with a big smile on my face. Thank you Karen. You left us too soon. There has never been a voice as beautiful and rich as yours. Heaven is truly blessed.
I was at a family picnic just outside Llangollen in North Wales in August 1973 when this came on my cousin's car radio and I heard it for the first time. I just knew right then that it was going to be a special song for me forever. I was lucky enough to see Karen and Richard in concert three years later and I now know how incredibly fortunate I was to have been in the presence of musical greatness.
Ahhh...yes! riding in the old chariots of yesteryear. The car's AM radio playing such fabulous tunes of the time from the MOR/AC and maybe even the top-40 stations of the day; good times!
@@thespeez lmao "Yesteryear". It's last year.

What a pity that we don't hear our favorite songs on the radio anymore. You go though the stations and all you get is rap,-crap, hippyhoppy, and noisy "music" whose words that are not understandable :( Give me/us the good stuff..
I have now been on this blue marble of a planet now for 59 years and I cant think of anyone i have ever heard in my lifetime that comes anywhere near having the effortless and flawless vocals as Karen Carpenter - absolutely stunning.
David Collins there isn’t anyone, that’s why. KC was out on her own with the alto contralto voice that was fluid in a 4 octave range. She is much missed.

don't ask if we're still listening this year, we never stopped listening.
such a beautiful song
We are all connected with memories of Yesterday Once More.
I’m a 60 year old Man and this song brings me to tears. I grew up on songs like this. Karen Carpenter was an Angel on Earth. God I loved her. I always wanted to see Her and James Taylor do a Duet. The 2 best Angelic voices of there era.
Turning 60 in Sept - what a time it was the music was terrific and she was such a . part of our teenage years - we were so lucky.
Pretty much anybody in their mid 50's or 60's is reminded of mom and dad hearing this. We heard this alot driving back an forth from
Boston to Maine.
You may like James, but he was pretty spare in my mind. Seems Karen's brother did a fine job. Personally, Sinatra would had worked, but then he had his Nancy. Hmmm, as much as I didn't like Neil Sadaka, as his songs were just vastly over-played, I think he would had done maybe a better duet than Karen's brother, Taylor, or Sinatra, but then Neil had this solo act going. For that matter, you never would had seen Taylor most likely, because he was doing quite a few with his wife (the name escapes me).
I'm 16 and reading all your comments is making me cry. Wondering how my life is going to be when i grow older. But i hope all the elders here had a greatful and happy life during their younger years. This kind of masterpiece is worth listening, nostalgic.
P.S. im using my mom's account.
Your life will be what you make of it. Be strong, healthy and happy young one
Remembering those days, Karen, I'm not sure if my tears are happy ones or sad ones.
Best advice I can give a youngster. Ask Jesus into your heart, and follow Him, and ask for His guidance and protection.
Your life will turn out just fine. Don't feel scared about the future.
20 years from now, the sun will still shine in a blue summer sky because God is faithful
20 years from now, birds will still sing praises to God each morning
20 years from now, little babies will still laugh and play
Your so sweet. A little advice, live your life to the fullest. Live everyday as is it's your last. Always let everyone around you know how much you love them, be good to yourself and as far as music. Music is one of the most amazing things we have. Enjoy it! When your older you'll hear a song and you will remember special moments through that music. Some sad some so happy. Go back in time and listen to music from the 50, 60, 70 and 80's and 90's music is a beautiful thing
I really missed good old times😞❤️

I am 42 years old Chinese and this is the FIRST English song i heard in my life. It was about 1993 and taught by my high school English teacher. You can't imagine how much does this American song gives resonant with a little boy in a pretty isolated country at that moment. Then in my following life, i got much and lost more, but this song alway circles in my heart. Cannot believe i will move to LA someday and i am so excited i am so close to the place where Carpenters lived. It is so chilling. Btw, anybody know if there is a museum for them? I definitely want to pay a visit.
Go my friend!
Yeah, this is THE English song for so many Chinese in 80s and 90s...
I don't know if there is a museum but there was a very good documentary done by PBS. If you Google it I'm sure you will find it.
之後就是my heart will go on
The coincidences in life are truly amazing. I was brought here because of a wonderful Chinese woman mentioned this song. Here I am moved by your story as well.
We koreans really love carpenters songs.when we were hard time,it helped our emotion and dreams. Thank you.
A beautiful voice. Nothing else needs to be said
amen
Every one of them break my heart, when you have lived all of the lyric's in all of their song's, their meaning's become clearer within my world...Like the small part in one that say's "I love you in a place where there is no space and time"...Just kills me, 20 year's ago i lost my prince charming my soul mate....With his passing i have understood the meaning of eternal love....Yes i am getting long in tooth, but....I still wait to fall into his arm's when i get to the other side.
Very touched by your words. I lost my mom a few years back and I feel the exact same way. Keep saying and thinking the exact same thing......Can't wait to fall into her arms when it's my time to go. Until then.....keep living and loving.

I was born in yr 1971. I was first introduced this song by my school music teacher.
It had become my lullaby song when I preparing my sons to bed.
He is an adult now. Few days ago, he came back home and shared excitingly with me that he heard this old song played in the restaurant. He was amazed that he can sing along and memoize every word of the lyrics correctly..He recalled when he was a boy,he found this song is so soothing and brings him calmness. He is happy to find back this old song.
I realised I have not played it for many years. This is the reason I am here today to play ‘ yesterday once more’ and find back my best memories…..
Thanks, Carpenters❤

My mom passed on 4/20/19. I played all the Carpenters songs to her, as she was transitioning from this life to Heaven. This was the last one played before she passed. ❤️She would always put the record player on when I was little and we would listen to the Carpenters, sing, and dance. Thanks mom! Miss and love you always! 💕🌹🦋

I am an Indian, I live in India, and every time I hear this song, my heart fills with a sweet melancholy.
It also revives a memory of my college days when we felt emotions we no longer feel with the same intensity.
Alas, the ravages of age!
The days of our youth are the days of our glory (:
I'm from Malaysia and just know what you are saying. Those feelings, yet I'm happy they are no longer there, I'm more composed these days while not loosing my compassion or empathy 😀
A fellow Indian here. This song reminds me of my childhood, it was so beautiful, but time just passes away and we get old. We don’t realise the best times of our lives until they have passed.
So soothing...so heart-rending...so lovable...any day...any time...since I got introduced to this song, decades ago...Courtesy: All India Radio, Delhi-B then...!
Not many singers can tear my chest open and rip out my heart, then stuff it full of candy, rainbows, and Disney characters...and leave me smiling. What a voice!

So beautiful stirs so many emotions.

I think these days it has become more about the singer than the song ! This is a beautiful song

@@dorothymorris5363 My twin sister Karen had this album when we were very young. She passed away!
I'm 66 now and i remember they buried her on my 26th birthday. That was a very sad day for me and a lot of other people. She had finally gotten her Anorexia Nervosa under control but it was too late. Her heart was too badly damaged from all the years of bulimia and starvation. I had been enjoying her voice since i first heard it in the summer of 1970 when i was 13. This song is one of those timeless classics. No matter what era you play it in it'll still be relevent. Rest well Karen. You are in the Lords loving embrace for all time now.....

There will never be another voice like this angel! Rock and roller here, 66 years old, but the Carpenters were always in my heart seen and heard as musical perfection. I remember playing 8 tracks of the Carpenters in my car and I was worlds away from any teenage pain that came my way. Karen, you sang and I heard. Now thru You Tube, I see also! I know your story as history has recorded it, but I hope somewhere you knew how loved you were. All the years have passed, but you are forever frozen in a time that was magical for me. No matter what you thought or what demons you fought, you made our hearts smile. 2020 and still listening!
Hate to break it to you but there is mate, She goes by the name of Claire De La Fuente. She sang their song In your Eyes, they sounded almost the same.

Or when you finally got the new album and played it over and over until you knew all the lyrics to every song. I will never tire of listening to Karen Carpenter sing.
So true, back in the seventies radio had so many more audiences than today. You actually did listen and hope they played something you liked! Remember, they had ☎️ call in request lines. Girls would wait on hold for an hour just to get through to an obedient DJ. Wow , so much has changed! 😃😫
I remember using up my pocket money to purchase the Carpenters' "Horizon" album when it came out in June 1975. I was just about to start my "O" Level exams and wouldn't let myself listen to it - even though I was sorely tempted! - until I had finished the exams, so that I had something to look forward to at the end of a very stressful month. It was definitely worth the wait!

Hello 🌹
Karen’s voice was impeccable! Her tone, pitch, phrasing and control are all remarkable. RIP 🙏
The Carpenters don’t get enough credit. Amazing music that provokes such emotion in those that hear it. Almost like gospel music. Even though the song lyrics seem sad, the song feels a comfortable and joyful. Almost like I don’t want it to end. You can see how sick Karen really was and it’s incredible that she could still sing so beautifully and powerful. She was a one of a kind singer and Richard Carpenter is an incredible song writer.

Now this is still great music after all these years. Timeless
Tears, from the memories in the past that you can't relive anymore. The people, oh the people are not there anymore or things have changed so fast. It's like you're not the innocent person that you are before, and it makes you sad because you can't do anything to fix it.

Oh gosh, I literally cried, I still remember the time when my dad always play this song on the cassette player. Now it's yesterday once more...
you're very in touch with your feelings
i nearly cry too.
Me too bro, cant control it now! Ohh..
Karen Carpenter is undisputedly the greatest female singing voice ever...... she has the voice of an angel.
Yes, you're perfectly right 🙂 ... and I think the reason is that she actually was an angel, the sweetest and most tender among them ❤❤❤ ...
This song is really heavenly, of an unspeakable beauty ... everytime I listen to it, it's completely impossible for me to hold tears back 😥😥😥 ... yes, it's something so tremendously powerful ... it's a totally overwhelming experience ❤❤❤ ...
I have always tought that. There is no voice like Karen's.
2023 and this song still gives me goosebumps
Me too
Something about the Carpenters…. I just love them so much. And I’m a metal head. Lol.
The Carpenters - Yesterday Once More' is old but gold, will never die.

probably from your english teacher's tape recorder in middle school.
It’s definitely from that one Chinese doll because I heard it from mine 😭😭
可能是超市音乐吧,我也是不知道为什么就记得这旋律( ̄▽ ̄)"
Born in 1970. I really do wish it was yesterday once more. Good times growing up with family and friends and life held so much promise despite all the problems that were around in those days. A much simpler time and we were all happier. Wonderful memories that will stay with me forever.RIP Karen Carpenter. Taken far too soon.
@Lisa Buckingham. I'm glad you've reunited with your past love. The 70's produced some of the greatest music ever recorded and some of the songs of that era evoke special memories for me and I get very nostalgic.
Such Happy Days x
I’m 90’s baby’s but this song makes me relax ❤ old but gold 💯

Dear Karen,
Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us. Your happiest songs brought us joy, your saddest, a river of tears. When you smiled, your smile became our smile, when your health was failing, your pain became our pain. You were always there for us during dark times. When you died a part of us died too.
You struggled with finding love & happiness, you were not alone.
You left us to join the Angels. Through your songs you will remain in our hearts forever.❤️
My Eulogy To The Late Karen Carpenter. (The Carpenters)
She’s an angel 👼 even I was born late I could say that she was the sweetest voice I have ever heard all my life! Nobody can sing like her! Her voice will touch your soul deeply!
Here you go Brother..... th-cam.com/video/y2RKb1R7jM0/w-d-xo.html
Saw them 3 times. Loved them.
Back in 70s England when I was a kid, my mother had a Carpenters box set on vinyl and this was my weekend, singing along to Karen and learning the intimacies of their songs and her voice. I went on to develop a modest career as a session singer and never lost my respect for what she could do or the construction of these songs. We have the same range and a very similar tone. Bless you and thank you, K.♥️🙏
@@octobertommy Lucky you.
She’s in Heaven now, God knew we couldn’t handle an angel on earth for too long
This song somehow had such a strong influence in Asia, many people heard this song as their first English song
The vocal qualities of Karen Carpenter's voice may be similar to Asian voices?
@@karlk9316 Good point !
I am from Bangladesh and it was my first English song. The song came with a 2nd hand MP4 I bought in 2009
Indeed it was my first English song. So impressed.
Honestly, I think it's because the musical style is similar to some contemporary Asian music. The chord changes, instruments, and harmonies all sound similar to the music I've heard in China.
Unbelievably naturally talented voice. It's so effortless for her, like a leaf blowing in the wind.
Great description Ron.
Ditto !
I'm a grown and I'm holding back tears, .....And like the leaf she blew away. sad loss
Nobody ever has or ever will sound like Karen Carpenter. She was absolutely unique. And with her brother Richard, they were an amazing duo. The way he wrote songs, using Karen's voice to hit interesting notes that just hit your heart, makes him a brilliant composer.
I have often said the same thing. Such a unique voice and could hit so many notes
I´ll join Paul McCartney in saying: "the best female voice in the world: melodic, tuneful and distinctive"
too bloody right.
Mari Berg yes barnone

I miss femininity
John Lennon went over to her in a restaurant to endorse Paul s comment in his own words of course
Makes you wanta go back. .Back when folks loved one another with respect and dignity. Cant say much about the music these days
But we can always go back to our ol favorites.Peace to all Carpenter fans !
Stephen Hunt it was a beautiful time.I miss it.
Love the Carpenters, beats today's sad ass music
This song hasn’t aged a day.
Just a few seconds into the song and I am back in August 1973, on a family picnic in North Wales, when I heard it for the first time and was absolutely blown away. It remains, alongside ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head", my joint favourite pop song of all time - what was it about the mid-1970's that produced such wonderful pop songs?
Tears 😢 im 102 years old now
Wowwww😃
Как она любит своего брата! Прекрасная девочка
I love this song so much, it reminds me of my grandfather, rest his soul. I grew up with him and his brother working on old cars and they would always have oldies blasting on the radio so I grew up with the exact songs she’s singing about. Breaks my heart that I can’t go back to just have one more day with him
Hello 🌹
Now it seems that She’s actually describing all of us listening to her❤️
Sweet Irony isn't it
Songception
She's telling us that she used to burn her plastic dollies on the fire. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃😷😷😷🌙🌙🐸🐸🎑🌛
I grew up listening to the Carpenters!! Karen had a voice that is hauntingly smooth, sad, mellow & velvety. We lost her too soon, and her voice will haunt us for all eternity!! R.I.P. Karen!!!
Corina Ruottinen How is life to you?
