That is an interesting recollection about Richard Harris missing the last note. I saw the original broadcast on 3rd February 1973 but it was not live. According to that week's New Musical Express, the show was recorded the previous day, Friday, which was the day of the week when new singles were released, so the decision had been taken to rush-release I Don't Have To Tell You, to take advantage of the publicity it would get from the show. Hence, Parkinson says, "The single is being released today, or yesterday", correcting himself to allow for the show going out on Saturday. The performance of the song was exactly as shown here. In A Gala Evening of Music and Wit, the previous year, Richard Harris missed the last note on Bridge Over Troubled Water and told the audience, "I got it in rehearsal and I'm damned if you're going to leave here without my getting it again!" So he had the orchestra and backing singers re-do the last line, and (in my opinion) still didn't get it spot-on. This was shown in the tv broadcast but cut from the recording that is on TH-cam. On Simon Dee's show in 1968 he sang Didn't We but had to ask the orchestra to start again, saying, "I wasn't ready." It was a perfect performance that I would love to see again, but the BBC tapes were wiped.
Lovely song done by Richard Harris. Another version I love is that from P.J.Proby he did in the mid 1970's on the TV show "Wheltappers & Shunters Club". Also to see here on You Tube.
