This debate is what convinced me convert one of my tanks to saltwater.
RIP Jake
I felt that sponge filter comment hard
This just makes me realize even more how much this hobby on both sides will miss so much with the passing of Jake such a great person
Both can be expensive and cheap - Rock, sand, pulsing xenia, pump heater and ocellaris and you are good to go. Both marine and freshw. fish can be wild caught and aquacultured. I need less time to mantain my reef than fw tank. 10 neons live 2y max in random fw tank, ocellaris can live 15y so this is tough to compare. You can change FW tank setup easier and in many different ways compared to marine.
Freshwater fish are pulled from the wild, too????? African cichlids, for example.
John Hudson rules! Love KGTropicals.
And this is why I don't want saltwater the arrogance is insane and the looking down on people
Don’t be discouraged. The people on the forums are so nice. It’s shocking sometimes. They all either have freshwater or started freshwater.
They're both communities of people. And people online are often arrogant and argumentative. I know I adore a good debate. But, I can find just as many arrogant hobbiest's in freshwater as I can in salt. Neither have a monopoly on that.
Second, Jake didn't look down on people. In this video, he's on a public debate stage. The intent was to be argumentative. John was in the same mind set. They both said as much in there opening comments. It was a presentation meant to prompt discussion and entertain, as much as it was to inform.
In contrast, Jake garnered such respect within the saltwater community because of his willingness to talk openly about nearly any hobby topic, the fact he'd get so excited about the small details and go out of his way to help others understand it, and that he'd go out of his way to help just about anyone. He particularly loved helping new hobbiest's and children get a solid foundation in what is often a difficult process of starting a saltwater system.
