Aranea are one of the races I love the most from D&D, and it's a shame that they went into obscurity after 2e's Red Steel. I think they're partially the reason why I decided to try and convert the Red Widow, which I really suspect might be a Ravenloft offshoot/corruption/mockery of the Aranea, as a PC race for 5e.
(7 mins in) Wait, what? No PC rules for Aranea? But you just said they cover stat range, class & level restrictions, and natural armor? What's missing? Also, Aranea received another PC writeup in the later Savage Coast boxed set for AD&D, which seems to have been part 1 of a two-part project to update/reinvent Red Steel, alongside the Orc 's Head Peninsula boxed set.
The rest of the rules. Like how to shape change, stat changes per form, special abilities like dark vision or the natural spells they come with. The special rules for aranea in the monster write up take five paragraphs, none of which are mentioned in the character generation section. It's not just the aranea, all the other races don't come with rules either.
Hey Glenn, maybe I missed it but, with the Aranea on the Savage Coast, can they cast higher than 2nd level spells? Also, what’s the deal with all the ads in your videos now?
TH-cam has decided to put ads in videos in channels over a certain size. About two weeks ago they told us about the change. Not happy but no choice. Aranea on the coast are considered minimum 3rd level, so 2 1st and 1 2nd level spell. But it's a bit hazy on higher-level aranea wizards. Like the PC rules, all it says is 'wing it'.
@@johnbalk6091 Long story short, applied to be monetized. They ran my videos through their filter, and was approved. So they are still running ads and I'm making a small amount.
After that description I'm not buying the 'neutral' designation. Also no mention of any patron spider immortals, spider mom get squished by giant angry lizard?
Normal sized spiders in a cave you say. . . welcome to my Australian based setting.
Ever since i first watched this video when it first came out, the idea of playing an Aranea Wizard has lived in my head rent free. One day, One day.

The Red Widow is based on the joro-kumo, a female yokai from Japanese mythology.
My favorite race to play
I remember these showing up in Exile: Escape from the Pit. Had no idea they were preexisting. You actually found a friendly colony of them
Big spiders small spiders don't care. I'm running away screaming like a little girl.

Do Aranea have any variation in their spider form before I now really want to do a campaign with a regal jumping spider Aranea with a nepolion complex
Just homebrew. Rules wise they have no variation
I wonder if the Aranea were an influence on the Neyogi from the Spelljammer setting?
Possibly but doubtful. Neogi are incredibly alien with the snake heads
I really wish they were playable...

@@Mr_Welch Thanks for the response. The ads aren’t too bad, just something to get used to, I guess.
@@johnbalk6091 Imagine my shock in June when my videos started running ads despite not being monetized.
@@Mr_Welch So about that, what happens now? Are you going to get a cut? How do you go about monetizing your channel anyhow?

To be clear I'm saying that because I love the idea of a Mr Welch version of Mystara.🥂🥂
Well with Chris Perkins saying nothing is canon before 2014, I think you can do whatever you want with Mystara and make it canon....maybe 😁🍹😁
For tourism, you're clearly going to reference Ierendi and Earthshaker, right?
Of course

I think Korotiku is the spider Immortal
There's a far amount of continuity problems on who they worship. Korotiku? Night Spider? Random elf immortal for some reason?
@@Mr_Welch Funny story if all the possible candidates saw an angry dragon immortal and all walked away whistling.
