Opening Day on the Hardwood Ridge | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

- With the passing cold front, it was the perfect way to open up the season. We went to a stand on an oak-studded ridge where I had gotten photos of two bucks that I was hoping would give Jordan a shot. We had some good action. For sure, the deer are eating acorns and sticking to the cover/timber, but that can be a risky way to hunt right now - as we learned. Good luck.

My Daughter just took her first Deer (a Spike) this Saturday and it was the most amazing buck I ever saw laying on the ground! She is 11 and that spike was an amazing trophy for her, she as seen me take "big" bucks but told me she did not think she could hold it together to shoot a "big" deer. But I could not be more proud of her. She watches your video's and is a big fan of Jordan and her hunting. Thanks for showing Father Daughter videos it means a lot to some of us to see content like yours.
It is awesome. I will remember both of our kids' first bucks as if they were my own. Great time shared in the field. Congrats to you both.
Way to go, dad! Great job teaching your daughter the outdoors.
Bill & Jordan, really really enjoy your videos. Real deal hunting and things go not as planned. We all live through it and it’s good to see it’s included in your vids. Shoot strait Jordan, we’re all pulling for ya!
Thanks for the comment and the support Brad. We appreciate it and hope you have a great day and great season.
Greatest show on dirt! Let's go, Jordan. oh, I can't tell you how many deer I missed when I started. Stay with it. You got dis!
It’s good to see Jordan’s smiling face back in the tree with her father. 🦌🇺🇸
We need more Bill Winke Videos, man in miss the good ole days when MWW was legit, I hope you put out a ton of hunts this year, the hunting world needs it bad, these new guys and new channels just are not the same! Your biggest fan!
Agreed! Not many shows were you can feel the passion resonate through the screen! I can't do the hunting shows were they just throw bags of money into everything and it feels like a TV production!
@@troybrake5686 for sure, Bill has such a great presence and way of explaining situations, been my favorite since he started! I'm a sponge when he speaks...soak it all up 😎
I follow Jared Mills, Midwest Whitetails, and Bill Winke. That's enough for me..Jared Mills is that dude. Last year that guy was on fire.
Thanks. I really appreciate the kind words and the comment. Good luck this fall.
By the way, it is our goal to put out a video after each day of hunting. I think we can pull it off. Have a great day.
Good luck out there this season Bill and Jordan. Looking forward to tagging along.
Any day in the field is better than the best day at the office.
Love the father daughter team and the consistency of your videos.
We do enjoy the chance to be in the stand or blind together. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.
Bill, last week you were saying you didn't think opening weeks' weather didn't look promising. I knew that cold front would drive you to the tree. Good luck, thanks, as always.
It was too tempting to pass up. It felt good to be in a stand. Good luck. October is awesome. We need to enjoy it more. Good luck.
Great video. I look forward to your videos this season
Best of luck this year Bill! Looking forward to following along. Pennsylvania opens on Saturday. Happy hunting
Thanks for the comment and the support. I appreciate it and hope you have a great hunt this weekend.
Goodluck this year Bill and Jordan!Hope you both get on a hitlist buck, Gotta give Ethan a shout out too!! Awsome cameraman! Keep us posted! Goodluck from NC
Bill, golly man. Please never stop making videos.
Thanks for sharing the 1st hunt!!!
Thanks for sharing and continued good luck
Looking to get an electric scooter to use for hunting. Please do a video on the 4 wheel scooters you ride in on! Thanks so much for the videos
So cute! Jordan looks good too. 🙃I wish you both a healthy successful season
Jordan, relax that holding hand when shooting! got that thing in a vice grip. excited to watch the season unfold for both of you guys, good luck!
Great content as always Bill ! Thanks for all the lessons you have taught us over the years as we continue to learn from one of the best! Good Luck to you and Jordan this season! I am sure she will be able to make the shot on an Iowa giant when the time comes, after all, her last name is Winke.. Happy Hunting!
Thanks Rod. We appreciate your kind words and support. Good luck to you too.
Very nice video. Man I love everything about hunting.
I see a bill winke video, i hit like.
I think those squirrels practice in the off season how to sound like the biggest buck in the woods coming in lol, that spot is a winner.
It is amazing how many times they fool me. And then when I finally just decide it a squirrel it ends up being a deer that sneaks up on me! Good luck.
@@bill-winke 😂 So true. Jordan and you as well, already looks like you two had a wonderful time in the tree!
WV opener was this past Saturday. We finally had several days of light rain after months of none at all, so I was happy to sit the opener out and let the rain soak my winter rye I was able to spread on my four plots.
I hope things take off there now. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
Love watching you two together. really changed the dynamic of show when jordan got hurt.
We do enjoy hunting together. It is a lot easier to find bucks for her to shoot than me! Thanks for the comment. Have a great day.
Bill you were very right about this cold front not being a knockout, pretty slow movement for me but in a safe location. Good to see Jordan healthy again and continuing to learn!
Thanks Alex. Yes she had a good learning experience last night with that doe. I think she got spoiled with all the years of gun hunting. Getting a good shot with a bow is a whole different deal -which I am sure you know!
@bill-winke unfortunately mistakes are the best way to learn in my experience, but a clean miss is the best case. She'll do great, she has a top tier mentor!!
Good sit. Happy hunting. Enjoy.
It was a good time to share in the woods. Thanks for the comment and good luck.
Good show as always guys.
"Larry Allen" would be a good nickname for that fat buck 😆
No, we sure can't pick on poor Larry Allen, rest his soul. We will find a good name for the deer, but I like calling him "that fat buck". That feels pretty good to me - right to the point! Thanks for the comment and have a great day.
Woohooo!!! Here we go! Bummer on the last minute spook!! But can't wait to see what Jordan and you put down this year!
I was able to figure out which buck that was. Ended up being a different one from the two we were after, so that is good. The one we spooked is a younger looking buck that needs more time anyway - so that didn't hurt us as much as I feared. Good luck.
Best of luck to you both this year! Boy those big bucks seem to move the very last couple minutes of light .
Yes, it will be interesting to see what I learn on my next card pull from the trail cameras. I bet almost no daylight movement. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day.
I’ve got acorns everywhere after the major storm in east Tenn
The deer will definitely be mopping those up for a while and likely not coming out much. Good luck.
Perfect timing!!!
Thanks for the comment Cameron. Good luck.
Best of luck this season!!
I noticed during your shot practice while on stand ~4:47, you dropped your left arm to get the downward angle. It's better to draw horizontally and then pivot at the waist. Otherwise, you're altering your form the other way and it could cause a miss.
You are definitely right about that. Jordan definitely needs a few more reps from the stand. Last year she hurt her shoulder so didn't get any shots from the tree. I will keep a closer eye on her as we get into the season. That is why she takes those practice shots, to at least get a few live reps each time we go out. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.
Successful evening ! Questions , questions. Would you be willing to share the weight of Jordan’s arrow ?
Cool hunt.. what is this Paul Blart outdoors contraption at the beginning of the video?
The guy that makes those gave us a couple to use last year. They are pretty good in the right conditions. Not much ground clearance so best for on-trail, but they are very quiet and have good power. Called Xidar Spyder. Good luck.
Must be nice to be having cold weather!!!! Opening weekend is almost here for me...but it is going to be high of 80 !!! UGH
That is really tough. I think there is definitely an uptick in movement with cooler weather, even if it is only 10 degrees. Our weather yesterday was roughly 15 degrees cooler than the day before and I think that definitely made a difference. Good luck.
@@bill-winke Thanks Bill! I will be hunting over a bean field. This year the beans are still green as opposed to this time last year they were totally brown. Not sure if thats good or bad? But they are in it pretty thick so far.
Hey Bill someday when appropriate a video on how you utilize the venison, maybe some tips on cooking or processing.
Steven, will do. We love making jerky. We can eat a whole deer (we do grill the backstraps) in about two weeks after making jerky out of it. I will put something together this fall. Thanks for the support.
A lot of EHD reportedly around here this year giving me second thoughts about doe shooting or even any buck less than trophy. This cold with the constant hacking and sniffling keeping grounded so far. Can't wait to get started though even if just to spend quality time with nature. Great to see you both in the stand. ✌️
Keith, I hope it missed you. That EHD can be really hard on the herd - I have seen it happen to my southern Iowa farm twice - once was really bad. It does feel good just to be back out on a tree. Good luck. Hope you are feeling better soon.
@@bill-winke would you consider doing a shoot and give us a lesson on EHD? Educate us, thanks
Loving the content as always! I’m going hunting in just a couple of hours with my grandpa, hope we see something!
I hope you do too. Good luck and thanks for the comment. Go get 'em!
Good luck this season, Bill and Jordan! I have a feeling the Jordan Buck goes down before Halloween.
I appreciate it Brent. I hope you are right. Would be a blast to hunt that buck at the very least. Good luck to you too.
@@bill-winke Thanks, Bill. Currently in a three-year slump and would love to take a buck with my bow this year. EHD was very bad here last year.
Pretty sure you meant to box out the logo at 8:31 .... nice to see another camera developer may be on the horizon though!
What is your preference for scent control? Any type of scent spray, hunt the wind or Ozonics. Hunting the wind is the best but any type of information would help.
Id be throwing those stands away and getting some milleniums. So much more comfy.
Good luck this season!! How did that Farewinds hoodie do in the 65 range?
It was awesome. Perfect weight. Had I done much layering under it, I am sure I could have been fine down into the 40s for a few hours. Have a great day.
@@bill-winke Thank you sir
Oh no.. did you have a chance to get a better look at the last min buck that spooked? Did he spook from movement/noise or did he get a nose full?
Bryan, I did figure out which buck it was. Ended up being one that I was planning to hunt this year anyway, so the damage was not as bad as if it was one of the bucks Jordan was hunting. I think he saw me stand up after doing the short end of session interview. I looked around, but with all the leaves, I just didn't see him. I don't think it was possible for him to smell us where he was - besides, he was past the doe and if it was a flicker of the wind, she would have gotten us too, but she didn't. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day.
Question? With that last deer at dark blowing at you what is your next move for that spot?
We will rest it for a couple weeks, at least. He ended up being a buck I wasn't going to hunt this year anyway so the damage was not as great as it would have been if it had been one of the bucks Jordan was hunting. I would still say we aren't likely to go back there until later in October now that we see the potential for that spot. We had only hunted there one time two years ago. It was good to see how much activity was on the ridge. Will be good come rut, for sure. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.
Were you able to put cameras out on any of the neighboring properties?
I have one guy that will give the thumbs up and that may be enough for me. It is about 250 acres located about six miles away. So I will probably need to finally get my hands on some cell cameras to make that easier. Look for that soon. Thanks for the comment.
Hey Bill, you’re a taller guy. Probably thinner than I am, but what size Code of Silence clothing do you wear. I bought some last year but retuned it all because it was extremely small. I usually wear 2X tops and their 2X wasn’t even close. Large at best, maybe even medium.
Paul, hmmm. I have not had trouble with the sizing - I wear their talls in XL top, L or XL bottom. I am getting a bit skinnier though - I stopped eating sugar and cut back on carbs. Makes me feel better and definitely lose weight. I would just call them and ask about sizing. They are good about trying to be responsive to customer feedback. Thanks for the comment and good luck.
😊Dream Big brother 🙏
Thanks Edward. Same to you!
life is just better knowing that, somewhere, Bill is in a tree with stick and string.
I like that. Thanks for the comment and the support. Good luck to you too.
Where I hunt I can't imagine being able to whisper while a deer is within 30 yards without spooking it like crazy - not sure why they would be so diffferent ... maybe the number and type of predators in my area!?!?!
I think you would be surprised by how low-toned our voices were. I had to really amplify the voices when editing to make it audible on the finished video - you could barely hear us otherwise. The magic of editing. I guarantee that doe didn't hear us. Not that our deer are super wired. They definitely are pretty laid back, but had she heard us, she would have reacted in some way. Thanks for the comment. Good luck.
Practice your coyote howl, that works sometimes to push the deer off, naturally
Chuck, I have tried that but it seems that they still pinpoint it to the tree. They sometimes don't run far and then they see or hear you climb down. I have had my best luck trying to wait them out and sneaking away. The very best solution is to have someone come and bump them off with an ATV or vehicle, but we didn't have that option. Thanks for the support and the comment. Have a great day.
Could be the camera angle but it seems like Jordan would benefit from bending at the waist more when shooting from a treestand vs dropping her bow arm. I think I remember a video last year that mentioned her target impacts were differing when shooting from a stand vs level ground. Bill you know more about bow hunting than I ever will, but just an observation. Thanks for the videos. I’ve always enjoyed your channel.
Totally agree. I saw that too when editing the video. She definitely needs more reps in the tree. Thanks for the comment. We appreciate it.
Just another suggestion to consider. I was taught with a kisser button and still use it (68 yrs old bow hunter). I think if forces you to bend at the waist from a tree stand or the kisser won't reach the corner of your mouth unless you bend at the waist more. Never shot from my cheek so I don't know the fix for that. Kisser might help??? Enjoyed the video as always. Best! Randy from PA
Catchy little tune at the beginning of the video lol kinda made me want to draw rainbows or something lol just kidding
I suppose we need something else there. I just grabbed the first tune I came across. Will look harder next time. Good luck.
@@bill-winkethe tune was fitting, don't overthink it. You can't make everyone happy. Ignore the haters.
I got busted by my first doe of the year, and seen a possum and a coyote.
Hopefully she doesn't remember your stand and won't come looking for you in the future. Good luck and thanks for the comment.
I’d say the stand during a hunt isn’t the place for a practice shot. Climb up in your stand in the off season and practice that shot. The arrow in the ground spooked your deer. Missed opportunity..
Sometimes you have to play the hand you are dealt. Jordan is not what you would call hard-core so there is little chance of getting her into a stand to shoot a bow consistently during the off-season. Yep, this time it cost her a shot at a doe, but the real lesson is not whether to take the practice shot, but rather, where to take it.
Rooting for Jordan to get "Big Fatty" 🤣
Me too. Thanks Brad. Have a great day and good luck.
The saddest sound I know.😢
