      I've always wanted to ask if the US Festival performance was all "real" or was it cleaned up, but then I realize I'd rather just believe it was one of the best recorded live performances I've ever seen/heard.

    I listened to Triumph with my emotion, I listened to Rush with my mind. Sometimes they crossed over. Either way, one was not more important than the other. They were both great and both important in their own way.

      I consider myself lucky because I loved both bands too. Triumph was the band that helped me get through high school and college. But Rush has been the band that I have found more helpful to me through adulthood. Still love both though.

      MrOoofah I mostly agree with you. The “politically correct, for every genre, don’t care who really deserves it” Hall of Fame aside, in Triumph, you have Fight the Good Fight, Ordinary Man, Magic Power (Yes, I loved Allied Forces)... songs for growing up. Rush didn’t have those (except Subdivisions) and that made Triumph very important to me. I loved Alex Lifeson, but I played more Rik Emmett air guitar. 🙂 To put a downer spin on this... I saw Rik at a small club a couple of years ago and I was profoundly disappointed. The show wasn’t great and Rik seemed kind of put out by his fans. It could be the Triumph fans that put him out. I don’t know. Truly a “never meet your heroes” situation.

    • @s6g2k
      @s6g2k 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrOoofah I'll agree. I was a huge Triumph fan after I saw the Rock and Roll Machine tour. Effing amazing.
      What I found though was that Triumph records were an instant gratification and (sorry) somewhat throwaway, where Rush albums were a slow roll. I recall that when a Rush album came out, my favourite songs would change over time, as I listened more critically. Probably a mindset thing.
      More notably for me was that as a crappy guitar player, I was disappointed with Allied Forces in that I could at least recreate most of the songs very quickly.

    I like both of these bands (Triumph and Rush). they have differences, as Rik stipulated. The one difference however is control of what you are going to do as a band and creating music, and Rush had that control over the music companies, especially after 2112. And unfortunately , Triumph struggled with having that artistic control and that led to problems.

    While I always liked Triumph's rock anthem-like tunes, I really loved how Rik Emmett would stretch out and challenge listeners with other styles of music on each Triumph record. Each album had nylon string instrumental things, jazzy things, more blusey things.....As a guitarist, this opened doors for me, and let me wade into the waters for those different styles of music. Additionally, the lyric content had a more positive spin to it, and stretched out beyond the typical rock ditty.... Thanks for posting this!

      Same ... Rush brought me to "the Rik Emmett band". Whereas Rush's members were all masters of their instruments, song-writing, and lyrics; Triumph was 90% Rik Emmett, 10% Gil Moore (who had an amazing rock voice), and some obligatory guy on the bass. But it was basically the Rik Emmett show. Rik had all the talent, the looks, the excitement, and the entertainment value. And "the hits always get me psyched" too!

    Listening to him describe doing the dishes and then wandering away to chase an idea the popped into his head, I immediately thought ADHD. The fact that he referred to his wife as proof that not finishing a task was a very common for him also helped.
    The interesting part, for me, was when he said that he was also capable of extreme focus on something that really appealed to him. He suggested this behaviour was almost like OCD. He's wrong there, however, not just because that's not an OCD trait, but actually because it is also an ADHD trait.
    Over the past couple of decades, researchers have come to regard the first "D" in ADHD to be something of a misnomer. A "V" (for variable) would be better because we can both fail to finish chores and projects as well as hyper-focus on others we really like at the moment. It's just that we're not very much in control of the amount of attention we have for any given situation.
    Creativity is also an ADHD trait, especially for those who have an above average IQ. Sounds like Mr Emmett falls into that group as well.

    I think what Rik says here is important to the band's legacy. It was about being a little more seductive than direct. Are there songs that have S, D, and R&R, sure, some of Triumph's songs and albums look at themes that most rock bands would shun. Thunder Seven investigating the musical and spiritual relevance of time to the human condition is one of the many examples. That is why they deserve a place in rock history.

    funny- listening to triumph was the air-drumming fist-pumping time, and rush was the contemplative... and yet here's rik emmet being possibly more articulate than Neil peart... frikkin amazing.

    Both bands were great for very different reasons. Rush was clearly more innovative and technically proficient, but both groups rocked hard and put on amazing shows.

    Rik is a musician. His collaborations with Lifeson, one in an old Guitar Player mag back in 87 or 88. And he brought Lifeson for his song Human Race. I love Triumph but some of his Solo albums, his playing is incredible

    As a young guitar player that grew up in Toronto , I loved both these bands. Fortunate to take a few lessons from Rik and have met Geddy and Al at a few meet and greets. Rik is a real musician with integrity but there is a huge difference between the two bands. Mike and Gil are not real players wheras Geddy and Neil are off the charts great. Also the friendship between Geddy and Al helped probably keep the band together during difficult times.

      Exactly! The Rik Emmett band was 90% Rick, 10% Gil, and an obligatory hairy guy on the bass. (I hate to say that, because I've seen interviews with the bassist, Mike something, and he's a cool guy, but a background bass player at best.)

    Love Triumph! You should do more videos about Rush. They are starting to become my favorite band of all time, even above the Beatles(but I need to listen to them more carefully). Thanks for the show and Godspeed!
    Here is an argument or evidence for God's reality or existence, which I love to think and like to write about:
    Personal experience can lead to truth if there is a reality to the experience in question. So God exists given the reality of it experienced by billions( or most) people. Real needs really exist(Oxygen, water, food, sex, security, truth, knowledge, justice, goodness, shelter, God... those kinds of real needs are differentiated from mere desires, wishes, or wants which some can confuse with real needs)and since billions(or most people) have a real need for their personal experience or real need of having God's companionship, security or guidance, therefore God exists.
    Since many(or most)of what we believe is learned from what other people tell us, then the very small minority of those who deny the existence of God can trust the majority for the truth of the reality of God. Therefore God exists because of the real need that the majority of billions of people personally experience in regards to God's existence or guidance, security, and companionship. Therefore God exists!

    Ok, That is more like I would expect from a guy who was front man for Triumph. I was glad to hear Rik state why he preferred his music style to Rush's. I prefer candor anyway. He was very diplomatic about it, I'm not saying he did an Yngwie. Triumph and Rush 2 different bands 2 differing styles. All good.

    “The air-drummers, they’re going to pick Rush every time!”. Rik got that one right. No one inspired more air-drummers than did Neil Peart. I’ve been to so many Rush concerts, watching the air-drummers everywhere in the arena drumming away.
    I have to be honest though, I was just as bad on some songs and had to air-drum those parts. You just can’t help it. It’s like people starting to dance when they hear a good blues tune.
    There are just Rush songs that drive your arms up into the air. Neil had a special talent for causing that.

    • @mikemurphymagic
      @mikemurphymagic ปีที่แล้ว

      Aww, that was the moment that Rik threw Gil Moore under the bus. haha. But yes! Neil found ways to make the drums a MAJOR part of a song's melody (not just rhythm and fills) that we would actually sing, if we could, but we had to air-drum instead. He was amazing! No one else achieved that.

    Rush was a progressive rock group, they were too technical for a general audience,they have their core die hard following. Triumph had a more commercial sound, way more "accessible" like Rik said - they should have been bigger. Plus there were GIRLS at Triumph concerts, how often did you see a female at a Rush show that wasn't dragged there by her boyfriend? lol

    I really like and respect Rick and Triumph. And love a few of their albums. Like Allied Forces. However, I love Rush. And Rush are great songwriters, yes Lerxst may have had a riff and Ged a bass part, but that happens with every band. Rush has proved time and again that they’re perhaps one of the greatest songwriters if not the greatest ( Beatles let’s say for argument) Rush has songs ranging from Classic Hard Rock, Prog Rock bordering Proto Prog metal. Catchy tunes, synth driven songs of the 80s and post grunge era tunes - Counterparts, T4E. Also a bit of prog pop with RTB and Presto ( for the lack of a better description) Rush> Triumph. I really like Triumph. But Rush are in another league. Also Rick covered Red Barchetta. Why would he if it wasn’t a great song??!

    I grew up in the Midwest USA in the 70's...my favorite bands 1 and 2 were Rush and Triumph in that order. Other than they both were from Canada, I never associated the two as they were two different brands of Rock. If I wanted to lose myself...Rush...if I wanted to just jam out...Triumph. I played in a number of garage bands in High School and favored Riks playing better sound wise (and Montrose) than Alex's. To be clear however, Rush is my number 1.

    It stinks that people always want to compare this band with that band and musician vs musician. Art is not a competition, it's an expression that affects different people in different ways. Why can't we just leave it at that? Both bands were great, BTW.

    I just want to know who did your'e theme song? it's one of those things were it only took about 3 seconds to grab my attention,,,within about 10 seconds it was damn,i really like that.wish they would ply moore of it.as far as Triumph goes,,I'm pretty strongly opinionated about them boys.I certainly believe that they deserve at least one of the best rock bands of all times,did Rik Emmett well I certainly think he has Guitar Gods standing. and now i did warn you that I was pretty strongly opinionated about them ,,, back in the days when his vocal cords were still young and strong , and had not yet figured out that weren't immortal. was quite possibly the greatest male vocalists that ever lived.

    I love both bands, I grew up with them, idolizing them from high school. That said, I think Rush is musically light years away. Not talent wise. Rick and Alex are equally wonderful guitarists. The difference, for me, is that Triumph, no matter how amazing Rick's solos and vocal range are, they remain in a very predictable rock and roll frame. 4/4 measures and conventional song structure (stanza-chorus-stanza-chorus-guitar solo-chorus). Magic Power escapes that model and that makes it unique. Etc, etc. I just love them both but I wish Triumph had experimented more. Rick's idea of progressive, as least as expressed here, is very limited.
