I guess the router kept rejecting a password because the wireless card does not support newer encryption that your wifi router is using. But that's just a guess.

To test HDD/SSD speeds under linux use Kdiskmark Its basically same as CristalDiskMark. Not sure if mint has it in the repo.
Also Mint Debian edition (LMDE) still has 32bit version

Both the b43 and b43legacy drivers are built into the kernel so they should load automatically. If not then you should first try to early load them before tinkering with anything else. The Arch wiki has noted issues with your card if it's Rev. 3 using b43-firmware and advise users of your card to use b43-firmware-classic or b43legacy-firmware instead. It also recommends blacklisting the unused driver so in your case b43 to avoid conflicts. Others here note a potential outdated encryption issue, you could confirm if that is the case too though I haven't seen anyone report such an issue anywhere.

You're one of the few that pronounced Mate the correct way. You said mateh, almost everybody else says mate. But if you want to try Linux on very old hardware try antiX next time or Puppy Linux. Puppy runs from the usb-stick so you don't have to install it and in RAM, so it's very fast.

Don't give up on this. I do understand why you may not want to swap the CPU, but do try to find the Intel version of that wifi card because Linux will more than likely support it (as long as the laptop doesn't whitelist). Or get a Linux compatible wifi 5 or 6 USB 2.0 adapter, which will be faster. Daisy chaining the internet connection like you have done is way too much overhead, hence the 27mbps speed; however, I understand why you did it. Try to find a 7200rpm ide drive (not Toshiba) (I know Kingspec makes ide ssds but I don't know about their reliability myself) and you should notice a speed difference. Also, the swappiness needs to be lowered to somewhere between 1 and 10 as the stock is 60 (this is somewhat advanced but should speed you up some and is well documented online on what to do). I wish you the best of luck.

Briefly, yesterday I set up Mint Xfce (the last release) on an old HP G5000 laptop and videos on TH-cam play astonishingly smooth! They don't make 'em laptops speakers like they used to!!
Quick specs: Cpu (upgraded) T7400 -- Ram 2GB (maxed out..) -- SSD 120 GB (yep!, sata connectivity for me)
Worth mentioning is the ace out of @petabyteag 's sleeve, to go with Hiren's boot CD.
Few years back I had to do the same with ultimatebootcd, since there weren't other options available.

Your Wireless card probably only supports WPA or even only WEP
Both security standards has been compromised.
If you really want to use the onboard wireless, you probaby can configure your router to use wpa (I clearly do not recommend using WEP)
Set a long and complex passwort and use it as a guest network or something like that
That beeing said, you might get away with an usb dongle

Lubuntu is a nice option, it comes with LXQt desktop enviroment, so that's that, also a nice SSD would be helpful, that'll be day and night in terms of time of installation, and also change that 1Gb of RAM to truly 2Gb of RAM, and it'll work... it'll just do way basic stuff, but at least it would be functional to daily use.

A few things to note about Socket 754:
    1) No dual core support, as no CPUs with such a layout were ever released for the socket
    2) No dual-channel support, and DDR(1) only
    3) While still objectively better than the Pentium 4s of the same time period, 754 A64s suffered from lower FSB speeds compared to Socket 939/AM2 on the desktop side and S1, which was used for Turion 64s and other related, later chips. This, compounded with the former two issues, mean that _they're just not very quick._
In short, S754 is just... kind of mediocre no matter which way you slice it. The graphics chip is probably the one saving grace from making this system truly mediocre even for its time.

Would be funny if you tried Haiku on it and the Wi-Fi actually worked. Or even FreeBSD.
Sometimes playing with the kernel versions or going back to an older version of the distro with an older kernel can make the Wi-Fi work tho. Or just changing distro. I've encountered a similar scenario where downgrading the kernel made it work properly again.
Linux Mint/Cinnamon in general is probably a tad heavy for those older XP machines. Unless they have a good GPU to make up for the other components. Linux wise, something like antiX would probably be better for the age of a computer like this really. I have that running well on an old 2008 netbook with a meagre single core 32-bit CPU.

IDE data transfers are obviously going to be one major bottleneck (besides its CPU & GPU!), so considering it's also limited to USB v1 my guess is that your best chances for relatively fair relief might reside in some « frugal » setup hopefully featured with a RAMDisk-Only option, as from legacy-old Slax/Porteus which also used to integrate the PLoP BootManager necessary to boot from USB via a CD-ROM, e.g. just as you found out i think.
This still probably won't leave much memory for the more demanding tasks, so it may help when browsing the web to go into text mode with Lynx or similar. As for performance comparisons, i vaguely recall having relied on HardInfo's benchmark via a Puppy Linux, and more recently enjoyed Geekbench available for both Linux & Windows... Perhaps an IDE/Flash adapter could have rendered "disk" swaps somewhat more convenient but i doubt it's worth the expense other than for is challenge when there are more productive ways to spend hobby time.
